1 Volume 28-9 A Monthly Newsletter Published by the RoadRunner Prospector s Club September 2014 Presidents Corner I am glad September has arrived. August was a very busy and hectic month for the RRPC. We had a huge amount of work to do as a result of the increase in the AMF fees from $140 per claim to $155 per claim. Also, right on the heals of that notification, we received another notification from the BLM pertaining to certain placer claims held by the Club. Several claims had to be re-drawn to conform to the BLM regulations. None of this resulted in any significant loss of acreage but created a massive amount of clerical work along with new location notices being placed on the ground. We had to act immediately as the government will not allow any extensions of time for any reason. All the claims are now redrawn to comply with BLM regulations. To say this was a huge task is an understatement. Additional work must be done with placing of the corner markers on all the claims, which must be accomplished in the appropriate time period. We do need volunteers for this purpose and we will complete the task. Much of the work that was done and is now completed was performed by comparatively few volunteers in very hot weather. The rain made things worse as some areas were difficult to reach. We need more help to finish the task so please step up if you are able to do so. You may contact the RRPC office, preferably by or call Bob Hood. If you send an please include all your contact information and availability. On a more pleasant note, we have outings scheduled and I am looking forward to getting out. This month we go to the Aquarius claims. In that same vein, we are considering cutting back on the number of outings. In July and August its really hot and many people have left the area so turn out is poor at best. Again, this does not mean that we cannot prospect, but outings require volunteers. Someone has to go out and put up the signs etc. We haven t had any volunteers come forward for this purpose and it is not fair to place the full load on a few people. Let us know your thoughts. We are also looking into the possibility of acquiring one or more claims east of Phoenix. If you have any suggestions in this regard, please contact us. Please remember at this point we are only looking and if we find some that may be suitable, we will have to do some sampling. We do have Club business to take care of and this includes election of two officers and two board members. If anyone wishes to serve or nominate anyone else (with their permission) please contact the office. Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to by-law changes please contact the office, as all such proposals must be approved by the members in the November elections. That is enough for now. Make it a good month and be safe out there. Frederick Horn, President September 2014 Page 1

3 Dutch Oven Cooking Class At our October outing on the Cass Claims (Map 12) we will be holding a Dutch Oven Cooking Class. If you have ever wanted to learn how to use a Dutch Oven or if you are already experienced and want to share your knowledge you are welcomed to attend this class. It will be held the afternoon of October 18 th. We can cook a few Cornish Game Hens, Cowboy Potatoes, Cobblers, Pineapple upside down cake, etc. The club has agreed to pay for the ingredients we will be using so there will be no fee to attend and sample whatever we will be cooking. We will be sharing any left overs to all members that evening at the nightly bon fire. I do need a list of members that are interested so if you could please send me at: Ordorica_aj@msn.com or call at and let me know how many people to expect. Outings Volunteers Needed To make our club members and guests welcome to the outings we can always use volunteers to setup RPC direction signs and/or setup an entry point to the outing(s) to greet the members and guests and pass out RPC literature as needed. Volunteers need to be at the claim close to sun-rise then end at noon. You can volunteer for specific outings, or ongoing, or be on call. Volunteers names are added to the monthly VIP nugget drawings and do not need to be present to win a nugget. You can also bring a buddy or guest and they will also qualify for a VIP nugget. Contact the RPC office as noted in this newsletter for more information. If a member would like to present an activity at any outing such as prospecting equipment demo s, mining techniques, where to find the gold, or fun activities at the club picnics for adults and kids, or whatever you can think of to enhance the outings experience. Volunteers names are added to the monthly VIP nugget drawings and do not need to be present to win a nugget. Contact the RPC office as noted in this newsletter for more information. A notice of the activity will be put in the newsletter prior to the outing(s). New Memberships Needed The Board would like to grow the membership and has agreed to institute a reward system for any member who recruits a new person to the club. Once the new member is official, the recruiting member will receive a VIP size nugget. The membership application has been modified to include space for new members to insert the name and badge number of the member who recommended them to the club. New applications are available at the club office and will be available at each monthly meeting. Also, business cards will be available at our meetings which have space for your name and badge number. A link to a printable application can be found on the How to Join page, on the club website: So, talk to your friends and family who may be interested in prospecting and mining, and even people out on the claims that are not members. These are your potential candidates who might have an interest in our club benefits. Remember to give them your name and badge number in order for you to receive credit and a shiny VIP nugget which has an approximate weight of 0.3 DWT. September 2014 Page 3

4 Club member Gene Mrotek authored several great newsletter articles over the years. The article below is a reprint from the September 2002 issue of Bird Tailings. GENE SEZ September 2002 Along the Senator/Goodwin Highway This bumpy road that a lot of us use, either coming out of Mayer or out of Prescott on Mt. Vernon Street, is heavy with Arizona history. It passes through some of the richest mineral areas in the state and no doubt there are still treasures along the way. I will mention a few areas maybe worth prospecting now that our wet claims turned to dry. Years ago I was told by an old prospector that as you come out of Mayer and start out of Mule Canyon, either the first or second gulch on your left, has about a 75 foot stretch of caliche with small gold nuggets cemented throughout this hard clay. I have never checked this out. Also about 500 feet past Mule Creek the road has a heavy concentration of black sand for approximately 200 feet. This must be coming off a vein on your right and washing onto the road. Is there gold there too? Moving down the road we come to the turn off to our Wolf Creek claim about 200 feet past Trail 304. About a mile further we cross Wolf Creek and continue to the Turkey Creek crossing about 3 miles further. Here we take the fork marked to Prescott. About ¼ mile up the road was the actual town site of Goodwin. The foundation remaining on the left side of the road was the post office. A little further up the road was the school. In fact the school's rusted hand water pump is still standing 200 feet up the gulch on your left. Continuing on, you come to historic Palace Station. About 1 ½ miles up the road; you come to the site of the ghost mining and milling town of Venezia. Many house ruins can be found above and below this site on the west, or on your left side under the pine trees. A little over ½ mile up the road is a trail that leads to the old Crook mine. Somewhere in this area Jacob Waltz of Superstition Mountain fame located 5 claims in 1864 with four partners. About another ½ mile up the road where it makes a very sharp left turn, stop. You will be looking down at what looks like a meadow or pasture. This is the site of Crook City. You can drive down a trail and easily find the two wells that served the town of people. I have given you a number of places to visit and do some detecting. The land status of these areas are not currently known to me and if any posted or private areas are encountered be sure they are honored. - Good luck. Remember: Leave No Holes September 2014 Page 4
