1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number 29, 9 February 2015 Presidents Report This will be a short report, as the major part of the report is contained in the summary of our Club Forum that we held last week. For members who were away, I am happy to explain in more detail the outcomes from the forum. We received good news this weekend, that our district grant application for the Resilient Youth Australia project was successful. This project brings a way of analysing the resilience of students in schools and identifies issues that might not have been obvious. It will help us connect with Council, Bayside schools and students. Well done Kerrie, Richard, Rob and David. Our Mayoral Golf Day is progressing very well with strong registrations already from players. As we move forward, a reminder to members that Beaumaris will shortly take the lead in running this event with Sandringham. We do need four members to step forward and take this project on. Chris D Arcy is also looking for a couple more members to join his community team. If you have an interest in this area please let Chris know. This week we have Malcolm Cosgriff talking about Underwater Diving Adventures. Geoff Stockdale is chairing the meeting. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday. 3 Beaumaris Rotary Forum Feb 2015: Our Club held a forum to enable understanding and feedback from members on programs that the club is running or planning to undertake. Discussion Topics: Treasurer / Secretary / Foundation Club Finances / Compliance / Centurion members President Elect Farmers Market Concourse Festival 30 th Anniversary Event Branding Membership Publicity / Community Engagement / Prospect Identification Prospect Invitation / Prospect Conversion / Member retention Fundraising Mayoral Golf Day / People Lottery / Farmers Market / Sausage Sizzles Outdoor Film Night / Masters Parking / Concourse Events International Sabu Solar Power project / Water wells / Student support Community Sandringham Hospital / Day on Oak Street / Surf Lifesaving Club / Sea Scouts / Cheltenham Community Centre / Beaumaris Primary Fete Concourse Classic Car show / Concourse Festival Youth Services NYSF / MUNA / Primary School Speech contest Resilient Youth Australia project Key Action Items: 1) Centurion Club: Send a link to members that takes them to the application form and explains the conditions. 2) Agreement to run a 30 th anniversary event in December 2015 and to invite past Beaumaris Rotarians. 3) Provide members with a brief summary of the types of District and Global grants plus the key criteria in terms of scope and $ s available. 4) Establish a more defined process to generate photographs and the ongoing updating of our Facebook page. 5) Find ways to engage with Black Rock Traders and shopping strip. 6) Use the Concourse Festival, Black Rock, Seaview and the Farmers Market as a method to sell the Lottery tickets to the public rather than only focus on Club members buying them. 7) Mayoral Golf Day needs a refresh of club members engaged to ensure we are prepared to take the lead. At least 4 members required. 8) Use the Birthing Centre opening ceremony at Sandringham Hospital to maximise publicity and possibly invite the Mayor to attend. 9) More frequent updates from Committee Members. 10) Our Community group needs some more members from the club to help engage the community more. Consider the question as to our level of connection with older residents in Bayside, and how we might increase our exposure to this demographic group. 11) Farmers market will start in April / May timeframe, and require a minimum of 4 members to man the entrance gates once per month. We also need to investigate buying our own branded BBQ trailer for use at the market and other community events. A basic example is as shown which retails for $3500. Or a more elaborate concept. Each trailer is fully equipped with a stainless steel four-burner BBQ, a water container, a heavy duty marquee and 2 x 100 litre eskies to hold drinks and meat. Page 3
4 BRAGG Weekend Mirboo North Fortunately the high temperatures predicted over the last weekend did not arrive in Mirboo North. Instead the weather was very conducive to golf and the South Gippsland town of Mirboo North and the Golf Club with its motel was very welcoming to the Beaumaris and Noble Park members. The exorbitant cost of $120 each covered two nights accommodation with continental breakfast, two games of golf and dinner in the golf club on Friday night and for non-golfers Peter and Maureen it was even less. The Mirboo North Golf Club is a typical country club with our host, Stan, acting as manager for the club and the motel, barman, cook and general go-to man. Supported by volunteers the dining room, which is open only on Friday nights, was full of friendly locals and served an excellent array of dishes. The whole group: golfers, non-golfers and visitors (locals Jim and Judi O Brien) dined at the Grand Ridge Brewery on Saturday night which gave us the opportunity to sample some of their excellent brews and great food before returning to the motel for some well-earned cheese, biscuits and James s 45 year old Port. While there is no obvious reason it seems that the ladies scores were much better on Sunday morning than the fella s (don t blame the port). Again the conditions were excellent with the temperature around 23C and we had the golf course to ourselves. All in all it was an excellent weekend with lots of fun and camaraderie and lots of interest in a return visit next year. A big thank you to those that made the trip and watch this space for Robert Saturday morning saw the men, Geoff Stockdale, Greg E and Greg P (Noble Park); Harry, Malcolm and Sheridan (Noble Park); and James, Roy and Robert tee off for their first look at this very hilly but well maintained course. No scores will be disclosed (what happens in Mirboo North stays in Mirboo North). The ladies, Kerrie, Megan, Louise and Pat tee off after the men and returned some very commendable scores and handled the conditions really well. Page 4
