2 Presque Isle Tour A nice sized group of our members made a tour to Presque Isle September 28 th. See the article on page 4 below. It was a perfect Miata top-down day! November 2013 Art s Column Page 1 With Thanksgiving almost here, we should take a moment to reflect on all the many contributions our members have made this past year to make it so exciting. From all the work your Board has done, all the hosts of Dinners, tours and other events that took place, the list is impressive. For all their contributions, we certainly should be thankful. While the weather is getting chilly, we may have seen the last of top down driving. Just past Thanksgiving we will be looking forward to our Holiday Celebration at St. Michael s Woodside Party Center. The party center is located at 5025 East Mill Rd., Broadview Heights, OH, In this issue of Exhaustnotes is the announcement of the Holiday Celebration along with a reservation form for you to fill out and send to me along with your check payable to The Northcoast Miata Club. Our program has a few changes but will still include a great meal and wonderful opportunity to socialize and celebrate the Holidays. Members who were at our October meeting overwhelmingly indicated that our dress code should be our Sunday Best but not too much Bling. So, get dressed to have a great evening. The holiday party invitation form is at the bottom of the newsletter. ZoomZoom Art Davis We are Growing! 5 Start Your Engines Event Wrap-ups Page 4 West Side Market Tour Hosted by: Jeff & Lisa Kramer On Wednesday, September 25 th twenty two Miatas (driven by: Margaret Watterson, John & Georgie Treible, Tom Stone, Bob Stefancic, Jim & Joyce Simmelink, Bill Shepler & Joanie Rogers, Gary& Barb Savage, Sharon & Bill Proctor, Jim & Marilyn Nenadal, Len & Nancy Monaco, Denny & Alicia Moeller, Mary Miller, Dan & Joanne Incorvati, Tim & Betty Golling, Jared & Tiffany Fonner, Bill & Ruth Drew, Art & Maureen Davis, Marcello & Peggy Codispoti, Denny Blacklock, Bob & Betty Belding, Daryl & Jane Baker and hosts, Jeff & Lisa Kramer) set forth from the McDonalds near 77 & Rockside. We travelled up Canal Road and down through the steel mills then over the Hope Memorial Bridge to the West Side Market. Once at the market, each car was given a food item to purchase. Once food items were purchased we headed east along the lake (and past some magnificent homes) to Huntington Beach for a picnic lunch. We d like to thank all who attended and especially those who pitched in to get our picnic items set out and organized. Presque Isle, PA Tour September 28, Hosted by Bob & Jan Stefancic Eighteen cars and the following people started out from the Sheetz gas station in Chardon: Kevin & Ginny Berichon, Phil Daly & his friend Stan Kublin, Roger Davies & Caroline Casterline, Art & Maureen Davis, Frank Ewing, Jared Fonner & his mom Eileen Fonner, Bob Haseley & Mary Letendre, Steven & Susan Huntsman, Dan & Joanne Incorvati, Tom & Sandee LeMasters, Scott & Mary Miller, Ulrich & Joyce Nehring, Bill & Sharon Proctor, Garland & Donna Ridgley, Joe Sands, Roger and Sheila Vandergriff, Joe & Sandy Wilick and yours truly. The dominate car color was red. The weather this year was perfect again. The tour started as planned at 9:15AM. We toured along Lake Erie and saw some great views of the shoreline. The first stop was at Geneva State Park Lodge in Ashtabula County. At this stop, lighthouse, Ohio and PA state cookies were available for snacking. Thank you to Dan & Joanne Incorvati for supplying the bottles of cold water. After we left the Geneva State Park Lodge, we encountered a lift bridge in downtown Ashtabula that was operating so that a sailboat could pass by. Pretty cool to watch so we didn t mind the delay. The next stop was at Conneaut Township Park. This park is located on Lake Erie and the parking was above the beach. Several members walked down the many steps and got near the water. We continued on and crossed into PA following the Seaway trail. Thirty-four people for lunch at Joe Root s Grill was managed very well by the waiting staff, As we were getting ready to leave the restaurant, the Vandergriff s got a frantic call from their daughter who had locked her keys in her car. So, they headed home and missed the tour of the state park. The tour continued into Presque Isle after lunch. We stopped at the Perry Monument. This is the same Perry that has a monument at Put-N-Bay. He gets around. Then we stopped at the North Pier Lighthouse and watched a wedding party attempt to get to the lighthouse for pictures without getting their gowns dirty. We then continued on to the Presque Isle Lighthouse. This lighthouse is only accessible from the beach. Several of the group walked the beach to view the lighthouse. By then it was 4:20 and so we stopped for ice cream at Sara s. This location is noted for creamsicle flavored ice cream which is made with a twist of vanilla and orange sherbet. Thanks so much to Joe & Sandy Wilick and Roger Davies and Caroline Casterline for being the middle of the pack and the sweep. Hope to see everyone at the next Miata event.

6 Start Your Engines Events & Event Wrap-ups Page 5 The Luncheon and Terminal Tower Tour September 7, Hosted by Bob & Jan Stefancic Only four cars and the following people started out from the Parkview Tavern in Cleveland, OH: Art and Maureen Davis, Jeff and Lisa Kramer and all the way from Florida were Jim and Susie Krysiak along with Bob and Jan Stefancic. The weather was perfect for touring downtown Cleveland. We all met at the Parkview Tavern at noon as planned and had a nice lunch on the outdoor patio. We originally were going to meet at The Harp restaurant but when we called to confirm our reservation, they were closed for a private party. Too bad, they missed out. After lunch we headed downtown and parked near the terminal tower. After short walk through the Renaissance Hotel where the Kon-Tiki Restaurant and Bar was many years ago, we arrived at the tower city desk. We had planned to go to the observation deck at 2:00 but since we were there by 1:40 PM, they let us go up early and stay as long as we wanted. Since tickets sales were very slow for this day, we had the whole observation deck mostly to ourselves. This observation deck went through a $2 million renovation in 2010 and re-opened at that time. Three years later, it does not pull in so many visitors as it once did. We took two elevators to get to the 42 nd floor. The first one took us up 32 flights and the second took us to the top. The observation deck is entirely enclosed but there are windows all around so that views in all directions are possible. Our tickets allowed us one half hour visit but we ended up staying there for about 45 minutes. After getting back to the ground level we took a short walk to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square. We walked all around the outside and then entered through the south side doors. Inside 9000 names are listed of Cuyahoga County residents who participated in the Civil War. This was very impressive. We had a personal presentation by one of the workers at the monument who gave us many details about the construction, the history, the cost and the architecture of the monument. The monument is open Monday through Saturday 9-4 and admission is free. Many of us had walked by this monument countless times, but had never been inside. The monument also houses spirits from the past which have been attributed to the architect Levi Scofield and a former maintenance man who died by falling on the steps to the basement. Since it was such a nice day, we then walked by the new Medical Mart building and the Key Tower where the first Cleveland street light is now on display. Thanks to Art for pointing this out. Then we went to the new Cleveland Convention Center where two events were on-going. There was a Health and Fitness Expo along with a Pet Expo. We visited both expos since the admission was free. Lots of cute dogs were brought to both expos by attendees. By the time we got back to the parking lot it was a little after 4 PM, but we had burned off some of our lunch and had seen lots of interesting things. We all wished Jim and Susie a safe trip back to Florida. A good time was had by all.

8 Start Your Engines Newsletter History Page 7 The First Newsletter Issue, August 1990 Rich Velardo I ve been reading through the pile of old newsletters and find them to be pretty interesting reading. The newsletter was not titled Exhaust Notes at the beginning, being titled simply, Northcoast Chapter Miata Club of America. For those who might not have been around the Miata scene long enough to remember, there once was a Miata Club of America and the local clubs were a franchise of the national club. The national club finally folded around the year 2000 and we are no longer a part of any national club. As reported in the August issue, officers were nominated and elected at the July 1990 meeting and a social committee was formed for the purpose of finding a permanent meeting place as well as event planning. Tony Caciolo was elected as the club president, Jack Smith the VP and Chris Vagtborg the newsletter editor. One other item of interest in the first issue was that membership dues were set at $25 AND new members must also have national membership in the MCA, which was apparently another $50. Not yet having a permanent meeting place, the July meeting was held at the home of Kathy Lyle (club treasurer) and the August meeting was set for Sunday August 25 th at Meadow Wood Recreational Park in Lindhurst (sic). Arrangements for the park meeting place were made by Jim Simmelink and a full page was devoted to directions on how to get there, complete with a map! More Newsletter Mania Rich Velardo Issue #2, from September, 1990, reports that there were 12 Miatas at the first club picnic, organized by Jim Simmelink. Also discussed in this issue were some performance upgrades for Miatas and news about where to use these upgrades along with several articles on racing venues. From the slant of the articles in this issue, it seems that the early Northcoast Miata Club members were more focused on using our Miatas as traditional sports cars had been used, as daily drivers that could be raced on weekends. Covered events included a rally, the Miata Corral at Mid-Ohio, driving schools and autocross events. The Miata Corral at Mid-Ohio looks to be the only event that s been part of the club s yearly tour itinerary since the very beginning, it was started by Jack Smith who handed this tour over to Rich Velardo and is now in the capable hands of Tom and Janis Williams. Yay, the club now has 30 members and everyone is going to receive their very own Miata pen. There are only 20 pens left so call Jim Flynn now to reserve yours. A review of the first sign in sheet from the first organizational meeting held on 6/6/ 90 shows only Lou Szabo as a still current club member. Jim Simmelink signed the sign in sheet at the second meeting. It looks as if we now have every issue of the club newsletter and a good bit of all the Miata literature from Mazda too. I ll be digging through the binders that are on display at Cascade Mazda and adding anything to them that I can.

9 The New 2014 Mazda 3 Page Mazda 3 Rich Velardo Lilas and I found ourselves in one of the ALL NEW (yes really all new) 2014 Mazda 3s a couple of weeks ago. This one was a five-door Touring model with the 2.0L engine and automatic engine and we took it out for a drive. With the Ford influence finally out of the picture, how did Mazda do on it s own when designing this new Mazda 3? The old, highly acclaimed, Mazda 3 was built on the same platform used by the Focus and some Volvo cars. This new Mazda 3 though, is 100% Mazda and we are pleased to report that it is excellent, it s even better than the previous Mazda 3. We found the new car to be quieter, more refined and better looking too. The interior is really nice with quality materials, comfy seats and a specific dash for the four door or five door models. One interior feature that gave us pause was the radio display that looks to be just stuck on the top of the dash. On the upscale models this display shows the navigation, radio and other functions common in todays cars, but for this Touring model only the radio was controlled on this screen. The new SkyActiv system of designing a car has jumped the Mazda 3 to the top of the heap for fuel efficiency while upping the horsepower at the same time. Two engines are offered, a 2.0L 155 HP available with either a 6 speed manual or automatic transmission or the more powerful 2.5L 184 HP engine with only a six speed automatic available. The 2.5L six speed automatic has a sport mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. In short, if you re in the market for a Civic, Corolla or Focus sized car you MUST check out the new 2014 Mazda 3 before buying. It is that good. EPA-ESTIMATED FUEL EFFICIENCY - 29/40 mpg (SKYACTIV-G 2.0L MT) - 30/40 mpg (SKYACTIV-G 2.0L AT) - 27/37 mpg (SKYACTIV-G 2.5L AT) - 28/38 mpg (SKYACTIV-G 2.5L AT with i-eloop)
