Owner s Manual 1 Calendar President s report 2 Meeting Minutes 3 Under the Hood (Club news) 6 Officers 4-8 Start Your Engines (Coming up) 9-11 The Parking Lot (Past events) 12 The Tail Pipe (FSOT) & In the Trunk (Editor) For those of you who were not able to make the May meeting, I talked a little about John and Donna's flat tire. A large pot hole did it in, and, in trying to change it we discovered a couple of interesting things. First the jack, jack crank handle, lug wrench, and socket for the lugs are well hidden. There is also a specific way and location, on the car body, to place the jack safely. After the spare was on, we discovered the flat tire did not want to fit into the trunk. The point of the story - check your Miata's manual, things will vary for each generation of car. Check your trunk for the location of the jack, etc. and carry something to keep the trunk lid down should the tire not fit (string, bungie cord). On the club business side, I have no news as to when the meeting location will be relocated to the Boot Scootin building. Also, I did not receive any info from Shanna (Mazda USA) about sponsoring our holiday party - will keep ing her though. Dan Cali suggested our club send her a T- shirt, so that is my next approach. I would like to thank those who hosted events in May; AWD Dave & Karen Baker, AWD Dennis Beckman & Maryann Tower, Spring Gap Bill & Rancie Titley & Scott Miller, Book Club Charley & Marlene Rodgers. It s the work of our members that makes this club work so well. Mike Please note: The Exhaust Notes is accessible to the public three (3) months after its initial publication.

4 Start Your Engines coming events June Event Page 4 Hosted by Jared & Tiffany Fonner & Scott & Mary Miller Remember the fabulous 50 s when you picked up your girl, cruised down to the local drive-in restaurant, complete with car hops and curb service. You enjoyed cheeseburgers and fries and maybe shared a malt with two straws. After checking out the other rides on the lot, you cruised up and down the main street, took a drive and ended up at, of course, the local drive-in movie theater. There, you d catch a double feature, and if love was in the air, maybe you got lucky in the back seat! This tour gives you the opportunity to re-live those glory days and enjoy all your fondest memories, minus the backseat! Join us Saturday, June 16 th, for the Fabulous 50 s II Drive-in Tour. We will meet at a drive-in restaurant for dinner. After enjoying the curb-side menu, we ll cruise to a drive-in theater and enjoy a double feature, under the night sky with the tops down. Details are still being worked out, as to which drive-in establishments we will be patronizing, and we will notify everyone who has signed up later, as things become finalized. We re planning to be able to tail-gate for a while, prior to the start of the movie, but again details will be forth coming later. To make the evening more authentic, all participants will be required to dress in 1950 s period clothing. Girls, dig out those poodle skirts or pedal pushers and your favorite tight sweater. Guys, jeans, white t- shirt, leather jacket, letter sweater or your Richie Cunningham nerd look, whichever was your style. Costumes will be judged, and prizes awarded for the best dressed couples. Games and or 1950 s trivia tests are in the works as well. Fender skirts, fuzzy dice and side pipes, etc., are optional, should you want to customize your ride. This tour will be limited to the first 24 hot rods to sign-up. us at scotmiller1@twc.com by May 26th to sign up. We look forward to hearing from you cats & dolls and hope you ll join us for this cruise down memory lane.

9 The Parking Lot past events Page 9 Freeze Your Butt Off Tour on April 28 Hosted by John & Donna Garsteck On a cold and rainy Saturday, 38 Miatas and 74 adventurous members gathered in Medina for the annual "Freeze Your Butt Off Tour". The cars were divided into three groups, the first led by John and Donna Garsteck with sweeps Art and Maureen Davis, second group was led by Bob and Jan Stefancic with Jim and Marilyn Nenadal as sweeps. The third group was led by Mike and Lois Kerklo with sweeps Dan and Terri Cali. A drivers meeting was held and at 9:30 we were on our way. Jan had arranged for a police escort to help get the group out of the parking lot and across. Rt. 18. Unfortunately, he was delayed and arrived just in time for the last group. Although the rain had stopped, and the sun had come out, it was still way too cold for tops down although one brave soul did have his down. We enjoyed some nice curvy rolling back roads and great country views. The tour group was almost at its destination when we came upon road construction. Traffic was backed up and we waited several minutes before we could get through the area, but, eventually everyone made it through, regrouped and continued. Some even had a few funny stories to share. There wasn't any construction on the trial run a few days before. Despite the delays, everyone arrived at the Der Dutchman Restaurant, in Walnut Creek, just in time for lunch. They were ready for us and we could choose from the menu or the buffet tables. Both food and service were good. The tour ended after lunch. Some members went shopping and others headed home. Thanks to all the co-leaders and sweepers. We would have been able to open it up to so many members without your help. Also, thanks to our pit crew for their help when we hit a pot hole during the trial run and blew a tire!! It was so funny watching 6 adults trying to get the blown tire in the trunk of a Miata. Thanks to Mike and Lois for a last-minute change in the route so other cars were not at risk with those same pot holes on the tour. Thank you to all who joined us, and we hope you enjoyed the day.

10 The Parking Lot past events (continued) Page 10 Around the World dinner at Burntwood s on May 10 th Hosted by Dave & Karen Baker On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 24 Northcoast Miata Club enthusiasts gathered for dinner at Burntwood Tavern in Rocky River. It was a beautiful evening to put the top down and enjoy the ride as well as the dinner. We were seated in the undercover, outdoor section of the restaurant. The conversation and camaraderie overtook the occasional road noise from the street! We felt spring had finally arrived in Cleveland!! Around the World Dinner at Guarino s s on May 23 rd The AWD hosted by Dennis Beckman and Maryann Tower at Guarino's on May 23 was enjoyed on the patio of this 100-year old restaurant in Little Italy. The weather was perfect, the food delicious (Mama Guarino's original recipes) and the company great! After dinner, many of us walked a couple of blocks and enjoyed the fabulous desserts at Presti's bakery - cannoli, gelato, cassata (oh my!), We'll do this one again! Miata Book Club On May 25 th, NMC members discussed the book A Gentleman in Moscow. The Simmelinks, Davis, and Lamberts enjoyed a Russian themed menu at the home of Charlie and Marlene Rodgers. Ukrainian Red Borscht Soup and Russian Deviled Eggs were some of the authentic entrees. The discussion delved into qualities of a gentleman and aristocracy. We may not have always agreed, but an appreciation and broadened perspective were gained upon conclusion. We toasted to our comrades and enjoyed one terrific discussion. Recommended book titles and interest to participate are welcome.

11 The Parking Lot past events (continued) Page 11 Pit Lane, Bench Racing with the Competition Committee It s been a wet racing season so far and none of our club members made it to the May 13 th event due to the rainy conditions. However, on the 27 th we had four club members racing, Kevin Jones, Bob Palmer, Tony Oriti & Rich Velardo. There was not a drop of rain in the forecast, but the previous day s rain left a lot of mud in the off course grassy area. The no rain got us out for some great fun again and, while it was HOT, there was some shade to be found & we had a great time. Rich ended up 3 rd in CSP, less than 2 seconds off the first-place time, Kevin looked a lot better in CS this time out, Bob Palmer picked up a nice 3 rd in ES and Tony picked up a 6 th in CS. Kevin & Tony started out as rookies this year and they re improving with each time out. We re getting a long break, the next autocross isn t until July 22 nd, that gives us plenty of time to get our excuses in order. This also gives all the non-auto crossers in the club time to plan ahead & join us, either as drivers, spectators, or passengers. Rich carries a second helmet for any club member to borrow if they want to drive or ride along. Spring Miatas at the Gap XVIII Photos by Tom Walden
