2 Art & Maureen hosted a great AWL at Sulley s in Medina.15 members came to this lunch meeting despite the weather. May 2013 Art s Column Page 1 Well, it s official. Members experienced the first Driving Tour of the year. On a very cold Saturday morning, a hearty group of us gathered to participate in the FYBO Tour. I hope this tradition continues. Our calendar has lots of great opportunities for you to drive, socialize and of course, eat. The Gap Adventure with the Titleys is coming up along with the Art & Garden Tour with the Simmelinks, the Geauga Spring Driving Tour with the Stefanics, River Run with the Coopers, Marietta Tour with the Miracles, Road Kill Rally with the Garstecks, just to mention a few. Wouldn t YOU like to see your name in print? Jump in with an idea!! Are you getting hungry? We have Around the World Dinners and Around the World Lunchs planned with a few more to be scheduled. Attendance at our monthly meetings have significantly increased which seems to indicate that activities are happening and our members want to be part of it. A shout out to Dan Cali for creating those neat Miata Club T shirts and then suggesting to use them as raffle prizes at our meetings. Thanks Dan! I think there is room for a larger attendance at our meetings and I encourage you to remind your friends to join the fun. Just a word about our Website. A meeting of your Board Members was convened to discuss updating our Website. Our webdude and dudette ( if that is a word) it is really Rachel, are presenty working on the website and I feel the input and support of the Board were timely in encouraging these updates. Thanks to your Board members for their time and input..they are: Dave Baker, John Embree, Bob Stefanic, Joe & Sandy Wilick, Steve Greenlaw, Lisa Kramer, Mike DePietro, and Daryl and Rachel Baker. Another great activity is about to kick in, thanks to a lot of hard work by Barb Savage, our Sundaes on Mondays. Barb has even snuck in a couple of Thursdays, giving us thirty-one (31) evenings of (as they say in France ) Crème Glacee enjoyment. Zoom Zoom - Art Davis

6 Start Your Engines Events and Event Wrap-ups Page 5 Event Wrap Up - Freeze Your Butt Off Tour Hosted by Art & Maureen Davis The tradition continues. Saturday April 20 th was probably one of the coldest days that embraced the FYBO Tour that our club has seen. Members reported snow on their lawnsprior to leaving home, others drove through white out conditions, and others were just plain cold. Heavy jackets, hats and gloves were in abundance at the start of our tour. Our drivers meeting was short and sweet so we could get out of the wind and get in our Miatas and get on the road. A spirited drive over some great County roads provided us with some zoom-zoom twist and turns. On our arrival at The Barn Restaurant in Smithville we were greeted with a last effort of nature to deliver some snowflakes, but determined as we were, we made our way into the restaurant. A great lunch and spirited conversation was shared by all our members. Following lunch, a small band of members continued on country roads to reach our destination of Medina Square for coffee and ice cream at Cool Beans Café, where some of todays major issues and problems were discussed and maybe even solved. We hope everyone enjoyed their day, we did. Participants included: John & Donna Garsteck,Dan & Terri Cali, Doug & Carol Leavens, Bob & Jan Stefanic, Jim Krysiak, Jeff & Lisa Kramer, Gil & Cheryl Miller, Bob & Betty Belding, Jim & Marilyn Nenandal, Sandy & Joe Wilick, Alicia & Denny Moeller, Art & Maureen Davis, Gary & Cher Davis, Gary & Barb Savage, Jim & Joyce Simmelink, Bill & Sharon Proctor,Bob Haseley, Tom Stone, Dan Curran, Dennis Beckman, Steve & Ellen Laitinen, Phil Daly, Rich & Lilas Velardo Event Wrap Up - Other Worldly AWD - Hosted by Jim & Marilyn Nenadal Thanks to the 28 people who attended our event. We just had and idea and went with it, only thinking, at best, that perhaps one or two people would respond. So, if you have an idea, go with it! Hope you all had a good time. (And we even got to use our coupons) Event Wrap Up - Around the World Lunch Hosted by Art & Maureen Davis On Wednesday April 24, 15 brave souls fought the elements to reach an Irish Pub for conversation and a nice lunch. No, the chilly temp and a steady rainfall did not dampen the spirits of these travelers as they meandered their way southwest of the big city to the rural setting of Medina. Sully s Irish Pub, located in the Medina Square, provided a warm and dry refuse for these travelers, along with a full menu of lunch selections and beverages. The room was abuzz with conversation about cars, recipes, grandchildren, the weather, favorite restaurants, continuing education classes, Irish beer, upcoming events, books, health issues and world events,to mention a few. A conversation like this is reminiscent of family get togethers, and in a way, is really reflective of our Miata family. Join us for another meal and become part of this experience. Participants were: Gary & Barb Savage, John & Donna Garsteck, Dave & Karen Baker, Lilas Velardo, Doug & Carol Leavens, Jim & Joyce Simmelink, Bob Haseley & Mary Letendre and Art & Maureen Davis

7 Start Your Engines Events and Event Wrap-ups Page 6 Marietta June 14/15, 2013 Rich Velardo (also Bakers, Embrees & Miracles) Yes, it s on again for this year and we re getting ready to have more fun. A few changes will be made for an easier start but otherwise look for another fun time in southern Ohio. The Marietta tour has become very popular with area Miata clubs and attracts clubs from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan & Pennsylvania each year. More information will be available as plans are finalized. Make this a one-day event or spend one or two nights in Marietta with us. While final plans for our exact tour route and the welcoming dinner for all attending clubs on Friday are still being set for this non-event, it is a go and everyone is welcome to attend. The food is great and there are enough things to do in the Marietta/Parkersburg area to keep drivers and non-drivers alike happy. For drivers the main event starts at 10 AM in Marietta and will include a picnic lunch out as in past years, folks begin gathering in the lot of the Hampton Inn a little after 9, with the first cars leaving the lot at 10 AM. We ll group ourselves with the fast cars in front and the tourists behind so everyone is able to set a comfortable pace for themselves. Non-drivers can enjoy the great shopping and the downtown section of Marietta while the drivers play. There are plenty of hotels in the area, most of the clubs normally stay at the Hampton Inn. Find the most up to date info here; RSVP to; Rich Velardo rvelardo@zoominternet.net or Bill Miracle cheeph107@gmail.com ``Jackie Roast.. A Dinner for Jackie Williams, May 31st Rich Velardo As everyone probably knows by now, Jackie is moving to Arizona in June. Jackie is one of the earliest club members having joined in the early 1990 s, she has contributed quite a lot to the club over the years and we will miss her company. Dinner will be on Friday, May 31st at Mavis Winkles ( ) 5005 Rockside Rd., Independence, in the Crown Centre Building (look for the green neon roof on the north-west corner of I-77 & Rockside). Be there at 6 PM for drinks followed by dinner. We will be able to order off of the menu, but the menu is scheduled to change around the first of May. We must limit the number of guests to 40 so let Rich know ASAP that you re attending. We must have a final count no later than May 23 rd, although I think we ll be filled long before that. Rich Velardo; or rvelardo@zoominernet.net As the title says, this is a roast, albeit a friendly roast, for a great friend of the club. We ll have a small presentation for Jackie and we ll also have the opportunity to share stories, anyone who s been around for more than a few years has a Jackie Story, so please bring your favorite Jackie story to share. Tour to the club picnic on July 13 th - Doug and Carol Leavens If you haven't been on a tour before or attended the club picnic now is your chance to do both. Join us approximately at noon on Saturday July 13 for a 3 hour tour to the home of Bob and Betty Belding in Columbiana, Ohio. ( Don't miss this opportunity to meet Harvey Firestone). We plan on meeting at Mom's Grill in North Royalton at Rt 82 and York Rd for lunch and leave at 1pm for a nice 3 hour drive to the picnic. We will publish our route next month so can also join us in route. It is an easy drive home, just a short drive up route 7 to the turnpike. Please note that all times are still subject to change. We will be running the route in the next few weeks to finalize the roads. Please mark your calendar. We are limiting the tour to 100 cars. It is not necessary to come for lunch only be there at our specified departure time. Doug and Carol Leavens dougml@roadrunner.com

Its Bohemian arty atmosphere has gold toned tin ceilings, brilliant colored walls, and frequently changing paintings. Fat Cats has been in business for 15 years and was an early addition to Tremont s restaurant renaissance. Fat Cats refers to its menu as eclectic, but there is a strong thread of Italian with a few Asian and regional east coast influences. Small plates are $7 to $10, entrees are $15 to $20 and there always several daily specials. Fat Cats is located at 2061 West 10 th St, Cleveland, OH, There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant and street parking nearby. We will then drive up Martin Luther King Blvd with pauses at some of the Cultural Gardens and a stop at the Cleveland Greenhouse. We will then continue up to University Circle and park at the Cleveland Museum of Art (indoor structural parking). (CMA is free, there is a parking fee). We plan a short guided tour of the newly renovated museum followed by lunch at the new museum restaurant or another restaurant in the University Circle area. We should finish up around 2ish. Some may want to stay longer to further explore the CMA exhibits or visit the newly reopened and renovated Crawford Auto Museum that is a short walk from the CMA parking. - LIMIT - 14 MIATAS Reserve For The Art and Garden Tour by ing Jim and Joyce (jjsimmelink@aol.com) Eric s River Run 13 Hosted by Mike and Cindy Cooper Eric s River Run (annual sports car tour) will be held on Saturday May 25, This is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Mike and Cindy Cooper will again be leading the Northcoast contingency for any Northcoast Miata Club members who wish to attend. This is a tour rather than a rally and is not a timed event. We will be driving about 270 miles. The tour will be driven on secondary roads in a spirited fashion. We will start near Columbus, proceed to the Pike Island Locks and Dam, on the Ohio River and finish at Tom s Ice Cream in Zanesville. There may be 65 to 100 cars on this tour, including several makes and models of British sports cars as well as Miatas. The cost is $10 per car. I must warn you, this is not a relaxing drive and we are not sight-seeing. You may however, see places that you would like to return to on your own at a later date. If you have never toured with the club before I would probably recommend that you not take this tour. This is like no other tour that the club does, Some first timers, though they did return home safely, never came back to the club. If you are not comfortable traveling in a spirited fashion or have physical limitations that preclude you from enjoying being in a car on Miata roads for 6 hours or more this tour is not for you. Everyone will have a map with specific directions and are in no way obligated to stay with our group. If at any time during the tour you wish to break off from the group please do not hesitate to tell me. I will make sure you know where you are and you may feel free to either continue the tour on your own or return to the nearest highway. Cindy and I will be driving to Columbus Friday afternoon May 24 and will be staying overnight at the Day s Inn at 2100 Brice Rd. in Reynoldsburg. Cindy and I have arranged to stay two nights. We have arranged a block of rooms at a group rate (Has been $55 plus tax per night) under the name Northcoast Miata Club. If you wish to reserve one of these rooms you must call the Days Inn at and hold your room with a credit card. Also please let me know that you have done so. If you are interested in attending please Coop at mdcooper49@frontier.com or call me and leave a message at Also let me know if you are planning on spending one or two nights. You do not need to notify the River Run planners, I will take care of that. You will however have to provide the $10 feeat the start of the tour. I will not take care of that. I have promised to call the motel about two weeks before the event to release any of our unused rooms.

Thanks for supporting Lilas & Bev Rich & Lilas Velardo March was a horrible month for Lilas and Bev Barkley, both were hospitalized for the entire month with life threatening Illnesses. They were literally just a few rooms from each other in Medina General Hospital. Thankfully both are out of the hospital and on their way to recovery.
