1 Northwest Arkansas Corvette Club P.O. Box 1064, Rogers, Arkansas Corvette Times November, 2014 Newsletter Editors: Linda and Gordon Slothower Newsletter deadline: Pictures, articles, items for sale must be to the editor by noon on Wednesday after the monthly meeting. President Jeff Hunter Vice-President Richard Nauert Club Officers Secretary Linda Slothower Treasurer Joanna Peak President s Corner ~ Jeff Hunter Dear Corvetters, We had a great meeting this month. We voted on the charities which will receive the proceeds from our 2015 car show. Thank you to each member who nominated a charity. Every charity nominated does so much good in our communities and every one of them would have been a great choice. The two charities selected were the Chase Family Foundation and the Elizabeth Richardson Center. We will be happy to work hard on next year s car show to benefit these two important non-profit organizations. We also decided on the amount to give to our 2014 charities. P.A.L. (Police Athletic League) and Compassion House will each receive $7,040 from this year s car show. Thank you to every member of our club for your work on the car show. You should be very proud to be able to make such large donations to these charities. I hope you will all join us at the many area Christmas parades this year. They are always a lot of fun for those of us in the parade and for members of the communities who turn out to cheer us and get in the holiday mood. And speaking of the holiday mood, I hope you are all planning to go to our club Christmas party on Friday, December 5 at the Holiday Inn in Springdale. We always have a great time and this year sounds like it s going to be a party to remember. We will have a short business meeting at the party to formally elect officers. We will present the checks to our 2014 charities. And the Dirty Santa gift exchange is always a good time. Thanks to Richard Peak for organizing this fun event. Be sure to let Richard know if you will be there. We also hope you ll join us this Thursday, November 13 for this month s Second Thursday Dinner:at Flying Fish just off the square in Bentonville. Meet there at 6:30 p.m. They have seafood, gumbo, fried grits, etc. Happy driving! Jeff

3 2015 Charities Selected at our November club meeting, the following local charities will be awarded the proceeds from our 2015 Summer s End Corvette Show: Chase Family Foundation was represented by Susan Chase and John Bakker. Nominated by Gwen Adams, this small local charity helps home bound senior citizens in need who qualify for Meals on Wheels. All of their money is spent in the local area and they are entirely volunteer run. The Chase Foundation provides essential supplies such as toilet paper, food and even pet food at Christmas time to feed the seniors on holidays and weekends when Meals on Wheels is not operating. Last Christmas they gave large bags of supplies to 71 homebound seniors. They also provide transportation for seniors to medical appointments, grocery store, etc. John told about a n 83 year old woman who lived in a trailer home. She had lost her husband and then her home just three weeks before they came with a Christmas bag for her. She was waiting to open her bag on Christmas so she would have something to open. For more information go to: Elizabeth Richardson Center - Jeff Hunter told about the doctor s dismal prognosis when Allyson was a baby diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy. They were told most children died by age 12. Staff at the Elizabeth Richardson Center said, Forget what the neurologists say. We see miracles every day. With the help of ERC, Allyson was able to thrive, graduate college, and lived long past the initial expectation. ERC representative Lynn Keller told the group they have five child development centers in area towns providing physical, occupational and speech therapy for children with development disabilities. They place adults in jobs and provide job coaches. They teach job skills to high school age students. Last year they served more than 600 individuals. If they receive our club s help, they want to renovate a new location in Springdale and put in a playground which, because it is for children with developmental disabilities, is very expensive. More information is available at: ZR1 Blue Devil Makes Debut After Restoration This week at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Chevrolet held a surprise unveiling - the restored 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil, which had fallen victim to the Museum s sinkhole in February. The car had been on display at the Museum as-is from March 3, when it was recovered from the hole, through August when it was returned to Chevrolet for restoration. Museum personnel were alerted about motion detectors going off in the Skydome area of the facility on the morning of Wednesday, February 12. They arrived to find a sinkhole measuring about 45 feet wide, 60 feet long and up to 30 feet deep and it had swallowed eight Corvettes. Three weeks later, the ZR1 was pulled out of the sinkhole. Despite falling nearly 30 feet, it started and drove out of the Skydome under its own power. After that unprecedented event, the ZR1 was the first car to be lifted out of the sinkhole, said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, performance vehicles and motorsports. It was great to recover it, bring it back to Chevrolet and begin the restoration of this significant Corvette. The ZR1 remained on display at the museum until September, when it was returned to Chevrolet for restoration. The damage included: Cracked carbon-fiber ground effects and a broken passenger-side rocker panel; Damaged passenger front fender, as well as cracks in both doors; Cracked windshield, hood window glass and passenger headlamp assembly; Bent rear control arms on the driver s side; Cracked oil lines to the supercharged LS9 engine s dry-sump oiling system. Six weeks after work began, the restored ZR1 was started for the first time at the General Motors Heritage Center. Two other cars will be restored next year the 1-millionth Corvette and a 1962 Corvette while the other five will remain in their as-recovered state to preserve their historical significance. They will become part of a future display at the museum.
