1 GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER BC-D SURREY February 2018 Hi from your new CD. Well it took the chapter over 20 years to finally get me to step forward and do something useful. I hope the wait turns out to be worth it. The previous CD may have been Hobbit like in stature but the job that V did was top shelf all the way. Well done V. I hope you stick around to help me out now and then. My new boss has told me Feb. 20 th is my last day. My bike is insured all year round and I will ride in any weather so call me any time after that and I will ride with you. When I was busy running my business it was a 7 day week and at times 24 hour day. I won t miss not having much of a personal life and look forward to a lot of time in the saddle this year. Okay now for the truth. I have no idea what I m supposed to do so I will welcome all help and suggestions going forward. I am terrible at remembering names so please wear your name tags for me. I am good at procrastination so if there is anything coming up a friendly reminder may help. The Williams sisters were there and yes 1 brave soul, Chuck Taylor, rode his Goldwing, although the weather was a little chilly and misty. I personally found that the service at the James Street Cafe Bar & Grill was slow in getting our drink orders out and then taking our food orders. Having said that, the food was good and we were still out of there in under 2 hours. Neither Pat nor I won the 50/50 but, our vibes were in close proximity and Arnie Tucker, who was sitting beside me won the pot! Looking forward to New Years gathering NEW YEAR S BREAKFAST Submitted by Shirley Williams Photos by Dave Ward We want YOU at our next Dinner Gathering! Held the first Wednesday of every month at Ricky s Restaurant 152 St & Fraser Hwy in Surrey. We meet to eat around 6:00 pm and Informal meeting starts at 7 pm.

4 Page 4 DISTRICT NWC DIRECTOR S MESSAGE January Editor s note: This is the January message as our newsletter was printed before I received it. The February message follows it. Fellow Wingers: A new year, brings change. The GWRRA has gone through several, all of which take effect January 1 st, As with all changes there is always resistance, sometimes out of fear of the unknown, other times stubbornness takes over. Our organization has not brought these changes about for the sake of change itself! They listened to the membership and realized changes were required for the overall good of organization. Some of these changes will not be easy for some members I say embrace them. For it is when we embrace change we too grow and evolve becoming better for it. As you are now all aware Region J no longer exists and the region was split into two districts. We are now NWC District The Great North-West Coast. North West Coast District encompasses Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia. I intend to visit all the Chapters in the District and see you all as soon as I can, yes including the membership in Alaska! As far as I am aware we are the Only International District in North America which is quite a distinction. As district director I see myself as a catalyst for the changes coming fewer rules, less politics and yes More Riding. After all, that is why we are all here in this group, riding our motorcycles. This is the common denominator for all of us and will be the reason we gain new members. The grass roots communication of rider to rider word of mouth about what a great group we are, the great rides, as well as the experiences we are exposed to is more than attractive to new members. We have proven that this works. That getting out there riding and embracing / welcoming other riders of other motorcycle types and styles is the key to recruiting new members. That diversity brings new knowledge and strengthens our ridership and our social network / framework improves as a result. As the newly-appointed District Director I will work with our executive group to: seek to increase membership in the association introduce new aspects of motorcycle riding related activities such as rides designed to help attract new and younger members as well as keep the current membership engaged and riding. make available education courses and materials to our members - especially to new members to keep them interested and focused, throughout the whole district increase communication with the district membership as well as other clubs & organizations seeking to find synergies that will benefit all members work closely with members to ensure issues are addressed promptly avail myself to hear your suggestions and support you as GWRRA members maintain the long-standing traditions of GWRRA as well as introduce some "new ones" for the future maintain the primary focus of our association, RIDING - as well as introduce related programs & activities making the GWRRA and our district attractive to new members There is no doubt that this will not be easy,

5 Page 5 DISTRICT DIRECTOR S MESSAGE continued however, I believe in this association and its members. Member's since 2013, Karin & I have been privileged to meet many members enjoying the many social aspects our association offers. We gained insight into riding styles, formed new friendships, and came to understand the long-held traditions of the GWRRA & our Chapter. As the GWRRA was formed in 1977 there are some traditions that I would like to see carried on into the future. What legacy do we want to see in our wake? As we all "age out" of our chapter / group activities, the association will carry on being a platform of friendship for people with common interests and a resource for all those riders' future and past. This legacy will not exist without increased membership. great team and will serve us all well. I especially look forward to the New Year; Unleashing My Optimism for an improved GWRRA in our New District. Thank you for being members of GWRRA; your membership and participation is what makes GWRRA the best international riding association in North America. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the coming year. Until then, Be safe Ride safe Kevin Bramhoff District Director North West Coast District One of our biggest priorities as a group is to garner new members. I encourage everyone to talk us up where ever you go. This grass roots movement will provide the impetus and encouragement required to get new members. Be mindful there will not be any legacy moving forward without members. I would like to introduce our new direct team: District Ride Coordinator - Keiller Gowans District Membership Enhancement Coordinator Linda Zervini District Motorist Awareness Coordinator Kathy Estey District Educator Gavin Karey-McKenna District Treasurer Janet Turner District Webmaster Dave Ward District University Coordinator Open Should anyone in any chapter in the district wish to Step Up it would be most appreciated. This group of enthusiastic, engaged, optimistic executive members will see their way clear to a new and improved version of the GWRRA in District NWC. They are a August 28 September 1, 2018 Wing Ding is the ultimate Honda Gold Wing & Touring Bike convention! For more information visit the website at:

6 Page 6 DISTRICT NWC DIRECTOR S MESSAGE February Fellow Wingers: Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started". Well fellow wingers we have done just that. The district team is in place, we have a web site up and running, plans are being formulated for rides and gatherings. We only had 6 weeks to get this far and my goal is to have the "district machine" up and running smoothly by the end of the 1 st quarter of this year. My other goal is to visit all the chapters by the end of next quarter. I would welcome input from members and Chapter Directors alike. My vision is to get equal service and representation for all chapters throughout the district. I want to help your chapter memberships grow and get everyone out riding. I am available to help, not interfere. Be mindful there are to be fewer rules I come from a chapter that did just that. We did not get new members by introducing more rules. If you recall my pervious (January) message I mentioned our legacy and what we all want to leave behind when we finally age out. We all want the GWRRA to continue, however, there will be nothing in our wake without new members. Increasing membership and growing the district will be the main thrust of our energies this year. My job is to get the chapters and their membership the tools to do this. We as a group also require an attitude adjustment what do I mean? Well it's sim- ple; if we are going to attract new members we really need to adjust our thought process when it comes to other makes and styles of motorcycles and the riders of them. We all have made "tongue in cheek" remarks about those other bikes you know, after speaking to many of the riders that we "comment" about, they do not like it! Go figure! Just because we ride "the superior ride" see where I am going with this. As Gold Wing riders many of us developed prejudices with respect to other "motorcycle brands". We need to adjust this. We need to see everyone on a motorcycle regardless of brand as a fellow riding colleague! They could also be fellow members follow me now? We all have a common thread that ties us all together, we love to ride motorcycles, we like to have fun, we like to be safe. We are creating a platform of inclusivity to attract new members. The GWRRA amended their rule allowing for riders of "other motorcycles" to be included as members of GWRRA. Fewer rules, less politics and yes More Riding. After all, that is why we are all here in this group, riding our motorcycles. This is the common denominator for all of us and will be the reason we gain new members. So how do we do achieve this lofty goal of new membership swelling our ranks? What tools are available in our arsenal to assist us in this endeavor? Talk it up! Tell fellow nonmember riders, about all that GWRRA has to offer. Be proud, tell it like it is! The grass roots communication of rider to rider word of mouth about what a great group we are, the great rides, as well as the experiences we are exposed to is more than attractive to new members. We (chapter BC-C) have proven that this works. That getting

7 NWC DISTRICT DIRECTOR S MESSAGE continued Page 7 out there riding and embracing / welcoming other riders of other motorcycle types and styles is the key to recruiting new members. That diversity brings new knowledge and strengthens our ridership and our social network / framework improves as a result. Statistics from ICBC reveal that there are 63,300 motorcycles registered in our province alone. As there is only 500+ GWRRA members in our district, we have a lot of prospects. So, when we are out there, talk us up. Be prepared to give them contact details, give them a web address, invite them to a meeting. We have some chapters in the district where almost all the members in that group have had their turn at being Chapter Directors. They are running out of volunteers. New membership resolves that issue. As we discovered many newer members were eager to get involved and the succession planning began handling itself. There are many benefits to new membership for the chapters. More riders - more fun, better activities and believe me, more members mean lighter workloads at all events for everyone. Embracing change and benefitting from it is the key. Be mindful that "Large Motorcycle" registrations are down significantly in the USA and Canada. The reason is simple, the younger generation cannot afford them, so they purchase smaller bikes that hold more value to them. Embrace the change, they are riders as well and require training as we did. They are future potential members and they will fit in. Look this is all a big cultural shift. It's shocking to some. Thought provoking to others. To use the cliché; bottom line we need to do this. That's enough pontificating! I look forward to working with all of you throughout the district to achieve our goal. We have a lot of good things planned, stay tuned. Until then Be safe Ride safe Kevin Bramhoff District Director District N.W.C. The Great North West Coast

Chapter D members directorsbcd@gmail.com For comfort, I need to see how the aftermarket people are going to design a highway peg. Also on my list is a hitch attachment. I m very curious how that one gets developed. The next comfort items would be for the co-rider. Arm rests, and CB plug-ins. I ve heard that there are about 9 orders on the books for the new wing, so we should see one on the road soon. That s it for now, Arnie Tucker

11 Page 11 DID YOU KNOW? Honda N600 In 1972, three years after its introduction on the American market, Honda replaced the N600 with the first-ever Civic. Last month, Honda revealed the tenth generation of the Civic model, so we hope that you now understand why this motorcycle-engined car is so relevant. We all know Honda today as the maker of the Civic, Accord, CRX, and a successful line of motorcycles and scooters. Back in the day, Honda was more known for its motorcycles than its cars, but this changed with the Honda N600. It was an evolution of a kei car (*see below) that was sold in other markets, including the USA and Europe. At first, this does not appear like a big deal, but the N600 was a car that came with an inline two cylinder 600 cubic centimeter engine derived from the Honda CB450 motorcycle, which happens to be the first Honda automobile ever sold officially in the United States of America. The motorcycle-derived engine that was adapted for water cooling could reach 9,000 rpm and drive at a speed of up to 81 mph (130 km/h). (*Kei car, K-car, or kei jidōsha, is a Japanese category of small vehicles, including passenger cars, microvans, and pickup trucks. They are designed to comply with Japanese government tax and insurance regulations, and in most rural areas are exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle. This especially advantaged class of cars was developed to popularize motorization in the postwar era. While successful in Japan, the genre is generally too specialized and too small to be profitable in export markets.) Submitted by: Wanda Truesdell

Doug and I chose to go to Mexico for Christmas 2017, not 100% popular with family, but everyone did get on board. Yes, we missed the great grandsons, daughters and grandkids, and dinner with family. We arrived December 24 th, ah won t do that again, not the best day to travel. We got to the hotel later than anticipated and were told there were no more reservations for dinner. Many disgruntled guests were in the same boat. After many discussions with the Maître de, we were told the Steak House had seating available for 9pm. Phew, no one went hungry that evening. Christmas Day was spent by the pool and a few, well more than a few drinks later, I head to the swim up bar to get a couple of drinks.it is no big secret about my height. I enter the pool and slowly head to the bar, yes standing on my tippy toes. I get the drinks. Now I must walk back on tippy toes with drinks in both hands held high above my head. The day progresses with a couple more trips across the pool until finally another guest shows me a shortcut. On our way to dinner we are guided around a crowd of people because Doug is on the scoot. One minute he was there and the next he was on the ground. You see there was about a 6 inch drop. I never laughed so much in my life. Impaired driving on a scoot! At any rate we did have a great time. I asked Doug to Marry me, his answer was an audible NO. I guess I will have to wait for Sadie Hawkins and maybe try again. It is now a law in Mexico that motorcyclist drivers must wear a helmet, but the passenger is not required to. They are ½ way there. Submitted by V

13 Page 13 LIGHTER SIDE You know you are in a small town when... You dial a wrong number and talk for fifteen minutes anyway. You are run off Main Street by a riding lawnmower. You can t walk for exercise as every car that passes offers you a ride. You don t use your turn signal because everyone knows where you are going. You get married and the local newspaper devotes a quarter page to the story. You drive into a ditch five miles out of town and the word gets back to town before you do. The biggest business in town sells farm machinery. You write a check on the wrong bank and it covers you anyway. The pickups on Main Street outnumber the cars three to one. You miss a Sunday at church and receive get well cards. Someone asks you how you are, and actually wants to know. And, on another note ---- A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street. But officer, the man began, I can explain. Just be quiet, snapped the officer, I m going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back. But officer, I just wanted to say And I said to keep quiet! You re going to jail! A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, Lucky for you that the chief s at his daughter s wedding. He ll be in a good mood when he gets back. Don t count on it, answered the fellow in the cell. I m the groom. What's in a name? Do you remember the famous Olympic skier Picabo Street (pronounced Pee-Ka- Boo) Well, Picabo is not just an athlete. She is now a nurse currently working at an Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital. She is not permitted to answer the hospital telephones any longer. It caused too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say, Picabo, I.C.U. (Admit it... you're smiling) Submitted by: Arnie Tucker A local senior says she is seeing eight gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed. Then I go to see John. Then Charlie Horse comes along, and when he is here, he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn t like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I m really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life! Oh, yes, I m also flirting with Al Zymer and thinking of calling JACK DANIELS or JOHNNY WALKER to come and keep me company. Author unknown Author unknown Submitted by Pat Williams

Hope the games night went well on January 27, Chapter D here had game night as well. There were 22 people there playing Mexican Train dominos on 4 tables. We all had a blast. It s a monthly thing here. Dave, Gayla, Donna and I are going to Canada Day today (January 28) here at the Park where I live. The fun starts at 1:30 with a tailgate party with games. pot luck appetizers start at 3, flag ceremony at 4, dinner at 5 and dancing at 6. There have been 900 tickets sold. Alberta is hosting this year. Should be a fun time! We also do a lot of great rides and adventures. This week a group of us took a ride down to J&M in Tucson and I found out what is wrong with my bike CB. Apparently, there is a loose or missing antenna ground strap. The guy who could fix it wasn t there that day so I ll either have to go to a local dealer, or back to Tucson. So far, I haven t been able to get a callback from the dealer who is only a couple miles away. I will stop in there on a Tuesday and talk to them. Tucson is 105 miles and 2 hours away, so if the local dealer can fix it that would be better. Submitted by Pat Williams Tel: (604) (604) Toll Free: 1- (866) # Peardonville Road Abbotsford BC V2T 6K8
