Page 4 HISTORIANS ARTICLE I m taking a look back 5 years to the year Kelly & Doug Conley were the Chapter Directors. Doug s monthly statement was very short (guess he had no help from Kelly on this one). He wished a happy birthday to BC-D, 23 years. And he stated six quotes the he felt may apply to the Chapter. Here is one of them A birthday is just the first day of another 365 day journey around the sun. Enjoy the trip. Author Unknown Yes folks, another chapter birthday coming up 28 years. I believe that Janet and I have seen all the previous ones. MEMBERS BENEFITS How many of you know about the members benefits from GWRRA? On the front page of GWRRA there is a tab, Members, then a sub tab, Benefits. Have you checked this out lately? Participating vendors are listed in no specific order. I am bringing this up only because I was just speaking with a GWRRA member that had no idea these benefits are available to Members. The vendor we use most often is Wyndham. Discounted hotel rates, plus if you sign up with Wyndham at no cost to you, you will also receive points for free nights. Now who does not like FREE. I do admit it takes time to accumulate points (15000) for a free night but while collecting points you will also be saving money on each stay. Check it out, next time you order from one of the vendors you may be saving some money. Pictures put into the 2014 calendar month of March are Eileen, Shirley, Kelly C, Jo Codling, Doug Gilligan, Con Williams, Mike Morin, and Robert Meers. Unfortunately, for this year, we will be away during the celebration. Submitted by V Hildebrand Chapter BC-D Arnie & Janet Tucker Chapter BC-D Historians

LIGHTER SIDE Page 5 After a tiring day, a commuter settled down in his seat and closed his eyes. AN IRISH CHUCKLE As the train rolled out of the station, the young woman sitting next to him pulled out her cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart. It's Sue. I'm on the train. Yes, I know it's the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting. No, honey, not with that Kevin from the accounting office. It was with the boss. No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life. Yes, I'm sure, cross my heart!" Fifteen minutes later, she was still talking loudly. When the man sitting next to her had enough, he leaned over and said into the phone, "Sue, hang up the phone and come back to bed." Sue doesn't use her cell phone in public any longer. Submitted by Dave Elliott February Money Draw Winner The rain was pouring down and there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman. He s just drenched and holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water. A passer-by stopped and asked, What are you doing? Fishing replied the old man. Feeling sorry for him, the gent said, Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me. In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman could not resist asking, So how many have you caught today? You re the eighth, said the old man. HAPPY ST. 6 Page 6 MEMBERSHIP DRAW ARTICLE This is an article my Grandson wrote for a school project. This is his interpretation. Was there someone looking after me. I know so. My grandpa One time four years ago my family were in Drumheller for a trip on our way to Calgary to go to my mom's cousin wedding. We had just arrived at the museum when my mom gets a phone call from an unknown number which she doesn't usually answer. This time she did. (Coincidence?) It was the RCMP calling to say your Dad has been in a horrible motorcycle accident and is being flown to the hospital in Kelowna. So he crashed his motorcycle along a deserted road down a small hill. Two men who had just renewed their emergency first aid (coincidence?) saw the empty motorcycle and thought it was an old accident then noticed that the bushes just after that were moving so decided to stop and check it out (coincidence?). There they found my Grandpa trying to crawl back up to the road. Luckily they were in their work truck which had a communicator that you can use without cell phone service and were able to call for help (coincidence?). They were waiting for the Ambulance and it was going to take about an hour and a half and the helicopter wasn t available. The rescue men knew that Grandpas lungs had collapsed from the way he was breathing. Then a training ambulance happened to drive by and stop (coincidence?) the only things the training ambulance had in it was an oxygen tank (coincidence?) Then they kept him alive until the Ambulance arrived and took him into the closest town. By then the helicopter was also available to come and pick him up (coincidence?) from the town golf course. They flew him into Kelowna to treat him there. While scanning him for his injuries they found broken shoulder, ribs, collarbone, collapsed lung, squished heart but they also found 3rd stage kidney cancer. And the one rib left that wasn't broken was the bottom rib protecting his good kidney (coincidence?) he did not know about the cancer before that. After months of recovery which was not that smooth because he is not that patient and got blood clots and had other issues they operated and took out his bad cancer filled kidney. If he hadn t been in that accident and found out about the cancer he would probably be dead by now and I would have had to go to a funeral. So were they all coincidences? Or is someone looking out for him? This story really makes me think! How can people not believe in miracles? How can people not believe someone/ something is looking over people? In my opinion this story shows that everything happens for a reason. Even though my Grandpa will never be the same as he was before, if he hadn t been in this accident he would have died by now. Being alive but injured is way better than dead. I definitely believe! By Adam Bowman Submitted by Harold Arthurs February Membership Draw Winner

Page 7 RIDER ED GIMME 5 THE INVISIBLE MOTORCYCLIST "I never saw him. He came out of nowhere!" That's probably the most common statements heard at a collision between an automobile and a motorcyclist. They're usually made by the operator of the auto because the motorcyclist is unconscious (or worse). As riders we wonder, "How can they NOT see us? Are they just not looking?" A lack of attention on the part of the driver does explain some of the car/bike collisions; the distracted driver, cell 'phones, unruly children, etc. All these can contribute BUT some responsibility belongs to the motorcyclist as well. I know. I know. That's heresy. Let me explain. Motorcycles make up about 3% of the "normal" traffic flow. People "see" what they expect to see; things like cars and trucks. Unless the rider does something to visually stand out, he # B Ave Maple Ridge, BC FOR ALL YOUR MOTORCYCLE NEEDS Tel: Toll Free: Fax: sales@crcycle.com can be easily overlooked. Motorcycles ARE much harder to see than cars/trucks because of their smaller size. A motorcycle can easily be "lost" in the background even with the headlight on. Many motorcycles are colors that lend themselves to blending into the environment. Particularly dark colored machines (black is the color of pavement after all). Many motorcyclist wear dark colored helmets (or no helmet at all, but we won't discuss those here) AND dark colored clothing. A number of studies in the US and abroad have shown that a light colored (white, silver, yellow) helmet is more noticeable (during daylight hours) than a dark colored (black, dark red, dark blue) helmet. Why? The driver sees this bright colored "orb" floating above the traffic (most riders heads are higher than the hoods/windshields of cars). It's DIFFERENT. Lastly (and sadly), most motorcyclists are not skilled in emergency maneuvers. Over 13% of the motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes made NO effort to avoid the collision. They didn't brake, they didn't swerve, they just rode right into the collision. That's because, after they've gotten their license, they don't practice those kinds of maneuvers regularly (or ever). Motorcycling is a SKILL. It takes practice. So how can you NOT be the Invisible Motorcyclist? Position your bike so it can be seen and identified in the traffic stream. Wear bright colors. Consider getting a brightly colored bike. PRACTICE your emergency maneuvers. Or you could take the advice I got once from a very experienced rider. He told me not to "ride like I was invisible." He told me to ride like they can see me and are actively planning to do something to take me out." By Jim Culp Taken from: ridered/chaptertalks.html

Page 8 TECH TID-BITS This month I would like to bring up the subject of feet. Specifically, what we wear on them when we are riding. I don t know about you but I spent years riding in cowboy boots and they served me well. Mostly I was interested in the fact that they were relatively water-proof and they came up my leg almost to the knee and my lower legs stayed somewhat dry. That was the sum total of my concerns except that they looked cool and the heels made me appear taller. Unbeknownst to me at the time, these same cowboy boots provided me with another important feature. Because the styles I wore are made from heavy leather and also have a heavy sole, my feet were protected when I would either crash or fall over! We all know someone who has ridden with soft footwear and some of them have even suffered injury to their feet because of it. The old cowboy boots are slowly being replaced with purpose built riding boots. From my own experience they are much more comfortable to ride in and they are really more comfortable to walk in. Most of the new riding boots are lined with Gortex fabric which keeps the water out. If you have every ridden any distance on our famous Wet Coast you will appreciate a set of boots that are actually water proof! The new boots also come with armor around the ankle bone and wear pads on the edge of the sole. Both of these will protect your foot if you have that unfortunate meeting with some immovable object. Riding boots come in a variety of styles and price ranges. Ronny Lopez of WA-S fame sells a very reasonable set and they are waterproof. All of the dealers in town sell 2 or 3 brands. All of the brands have models for tour riding as well as models for moto -cross. The motocross models are very heavy and come with much more armor than the tour models. Of course riding boots are available over the internet as well. So the object of my rant this month is, protect what you value! None of us would think to ride without our helmet, riding jacket, gloves and jeans/riding pants. So remember your feet and wear a good set of boots. Submitted by Con Williams, Technical Coordinator Taken from February 2012 Newsletter, so Ronny L probably does not sell boots now, but I felt this was a good article to reprint as riding season is right around the corner. 10 Page 10 FEBRUARY DINNER GATHERING RE-CAP On Wednesday, February 6th fourteen Chapter BC-D members along with Kevin B, NWC District Director and Dave W, BC-A Chapter Director and Assistant District Director gathered at Ricky s Restaurant for dinner. Dave W reminded everyone that Chapter A is having their Silent Auction on March 23 at Taylormotive. Kevin mentioned that they were about to sign up 20 new members at the Motorcycle Show, 17 riders plus 3 co-riders. Three are in our Chapter area. He also mentioned that the Gypsy ride is coming up in June. They moved the dates this year because of the fires in August. The District rally is going to be a biennial event, so held every other year. This year it is Wings in the Cariboo on July The hotels are almost 50% filled, so register soon. The BC Motorcycle Drill team will be performing. There will be a 100 mile long poker ride. The Timber Kings have invited us to visit their facility. The campground for the rally is beautiful and is just east of 100 mile house. Registration and everything can be done online: Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Pat had a game for all at the Dinner Gathering to play trying to decipher BC place names from some clues. Lots of people had them right, with a bit of discussion amongst people, however where people answered WHITE ROCK she wanted RED ROCK. Harold had made a couple pair of mittens, so they were one of the Membership draws and Arnie won them, then Harold won the other Membership draw and Bulk won the money draw. Thank you all for submitting articles. Submitted by Eileen McMillan BC-D Newsletter Editor

Page 11 MEMBERSHIP DRAW ARTICLES JANUARY WINNER Sunday January 27 th Wanda and I decided to ride down to Victoria from our home in Ladysmith to attend the Chapter V breakfast meeting. It was a beautiful winter day and a very pleasant plus 1 degree Celsius when we got on the bike about 7:15 AM. The weather girl promised us a sunny day. PS. The weather report on the internet insisted that it was currently 9 degrees Celsius in Ladysmith. I will take their reports with a grain of salt in the future. About 55 minutes later we arrived at Jasmine s restaurant for the gathering and were only to happy to rush inside to warm up a bit an get a hot cup of coffee. About 10 minutes later the rest of the members started to arrive and we met a whole bunch of new friends. Besides us the only other non chapter members to show for the meeting were Kevin Bramhoff and Karin Young from Chilliwack. The restaurant serves a good breakfast and the people there are very quick with the refills and nice to talk to. If you are in the area I would recommend them for breakfast. After a well run meeting there were 4 of us on bikes that decided to take a ride. Wanda and I on my wing, Tony Brooks who is the Chapter V director on his brand new wing, Bruce Walton on his wing and John Cantelon on his other bike. I am sorry to say that I did not even notice what he was riding. I will have to pay more attention to other bikes in future! The 4 bikes had a great ride on some very good and windy roads up the coast to Jordan River where we stopped at the Cold Shoulder café and had a cup of coffee. Nice place but be warned NO WASHROOM! After that we split up with Tony and John heading back to Victoria and Bruce and us heading to Cowichan Lake and Duncan to finish the loop. Lots of twisty 2 lane roads thru some stunning scenery, Forest and ocean and lake views all the way. If anyone comes over to the Island for a ride please call and I will eagerly jump on my bike to ride with you and act as guide if you want. PS the temperature never got above 5 degrees and the only sunshine we saw was about 15 minutes just before Cowichan Lake. Still a great day for a ride and not a drop of rain! Submitted by Dave T FEBRUARY WINNER First off, thanks for the prize. Secondly, here s the article. Looking back into my files, I see so many memories. I ll continue on the note of the birthday theme that I used in my Historian Article this month. There have been a few GW members surprise 60th birthday s parties over the years. These are the lucky names Dave Truesdell, Linda Parkes, V, Dale Crump, Janet and mine. Here are a few photos I could find from these celebrations: Submitted by Arnie Tucker

Page 12 MEC ARTICLE I have been many places, but I ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can t go there alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump and I m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. This is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there too often. I ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I m in Capable and I go there more often as I m getting older. Never have I been in Cubator. It s a good thing to never be too much in Debt. I have never visited in Surmountable or Comprehensible. I hate it when I m in Sensitive. I seem to hurt everyone s feelings and make everyone mad at me. I used to like to be in Touch, but now days you could easily get charged with sexual harassment! Are you in Tuit? For some reason I can t get into it. Stolen from my brother Bob. Submitted by Pat Williams Chapter BC-D MEC One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age, I need all the stimuli I can get. I have never been in Continent, and I don t know what country that is. It s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there. I try to avoid being in Tense, which isn t good for your health if you travel there too many times. I also try to avoid being in Sincere. When people find out you have been there, they don t want to travel with you anymore. I have not been in Competent, and site policies discouraging political postings prevent me from explaining why.

Page 14 DISTRICT DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Fellow Wingers: We have had a great start to the new year. New members signed up at the motorcycle show and some great rides and rally planned for riding season. Have you signed up for the rides and rally yet? Rooms are booking fast and rally registration goes up in price after May so early registration will save you money and ensure your spot at this once every 2-year event! Register today at: District Rally District Rides and Victoria Days Salmon Arm This year is a big R&R year. Recruitment & Retention. We are on a "full court press" for membership. We want new members and we want to keep those members that we have not reached out to and perhaps have lost interest in GWRRA. That is my fault! Everything that happens in a given organization is a direct reflection of its management and I intend to change the retention rates. That is my job! How will I accomplish this, with your help of course. We have an Emissary that is reaching out to those members that do not attend functions or take in Chapter life. We are encouraging them to do just that, to get involved and at least stay informed as they may find something that fits their needs. Your Job; when they do decide to attend a function, you / we must be welcoming. We must make them feel that they are truly "in" not "in the way". The other area that will need your assistance is recruitment. It starts with us. It is a grass roots movement that begins with opening a dialogue with other like-minded riders. So, I am trying to put myself in your place "what is this idiot talking about now"? I am not overly erudite; however, I am not completely stupid either. I get it. I understand that my constant harping about membership, specifically recruitment and retention, must be getting on all of your nerves. It seems that I am not making my point I do not believe that is the case. I believe that you all have the same sense of urgency about our group as I do. I believe that

Page 15 you all have just not unleashed your enthusiasm as I have. It's the weather, that's it yeah that's it, the weather! Look it is really quite simple, we all know someone that rides that is not a member. It can be a friend, an acquaintance, family member or just another rider you meet on the road. Open with the dialogue as mentioned earlier. Then taking out your new "recruitment kit" go through it with them. Frankly it works. We have proven this at the motorcycle show. I will be attending chapter meetings to hand out kits and review the features and benefits selling campaign contained within the kit. Its just a matter of talking! Remember we offer very good value for money as there is so much more being offered than just membership in the Best International Riding Association in North America. There will be a contest attached to the recruitment program one with a personal incentive and one with a chapter incentive. Be mindful that GWRRA offers the "Find a Friend" program as well. With plenty of reasons to seek new members why not take a shot at it? Riding season is getting closer daily and I am excited to take advantage of all the riding opportunities. I would like to see a "profusion of participation" from all chapters at all riding events this year. Let's make it the best riding season ever! See you all real soon! Thank you for a great start to this year! Thank you for being members of GWRRA; your membership and participation is what makes GWRRA the finest international riding association in North America. Until I see you all again, Be safe Ride safe. THE POWER OF ONE One song can spark a moment One flower can wake the dream One tree can start a forest One bird can herald spring. One smile begins a friendship One handclasp lifts a soul One star can guide a ship at sea One word can frame the goal. One vote can change a nation One sunbeam lights a room One candle wipes out darkness One laugh will conquer gloom. One step must start each journey One word must start a prayer One hope will raise our spirits One touch can show you care. One voice can speak with wisdom One heart can know what is true One life can make a difference You see, it s up to you.
