I have a bunch of ideas this time to streamline the activities and rides of the chapter to make it fun and easy to participate. We have the new ride schedule out for the Lower Mainland Chapters showing this years preplanned activities and invite everyone to grab a few to view and to give out as handouts to anyone seen riding motorcycle. We also continue our dinner gatherings on the first Wednesday of the month at Ricky's and our coffee nights at Tim Hortons on Fridays. I am updating our lists so I can get out to the members at a faster and sooner rate the spur of the moment activities that occur when the weather allows. I am reaffirming the team members that volunteer to help run this chapter and to bring you the activities that we enjoy together and hope that we can all have fun with them in the coming year. Thanks for your support. Come and enjoy a cup of coffee and some camaraderie with your fellow GWRRA members. Is spring nearing? Sure seems like it already. If this was our winter, we ll take it. Well, what s happened over the last two months? We had a nice BC-A New Years breakfast to start off the new year. Next was the Abbotsford Bike Show. For this year we chose to be spectators only, after assisting for over 20 + years. We were happy to have seen the Cossack's Stunt and Drill Team. It was a great show. Shirley Williams came up with an idea of a gathering of past & long time current members of BC-D. Eleven showed up for lunch (1/2 seniors day) at The Pantry on Sumas Way, Abbotsford. With more communication, we are hoping to increase that number. Upcoming (to this writing) will be games night, I think it is #4. Arnie Arnie & Janet Tucker, BC-D Chapter Historians If weather allows, ride will start promptly at 7:00 pm

Page 4 MEMBERSHIP DRAW ARTICLE We want YOU at our next Dinner Gathering! Held the first Wednesday of every month at Ricky s Restaurant 152 St & Fraser Hwy in Surrey. We meet to eat around 6:00 pm and the Informal meeting starts at 7 pm. Dec 10 th I woke up to a nice sunny morning in Ladysmith and the weather report was for a clear day. Wanda was out for the morning so when she returned at 11 AM I asked her if she wanted to go for a ride to Victoria with me. Of course she said yes. So while she had a quick bite to eat I got the bikes ready for our first ride together since early October. When we hit the road it was about 7 degrees and partly cloudy. On the road it felt a little chilly but the traffic was good and we headed south. Caught up to a little rain shower in Duncan but did not need to stop and put on our rain gear. As we went south along the Malahat Highway we passed thru Goldstream Park which has a late run of Chum salmon. I could still smell the fish and was treated to a bald eagle soaring just over the tree tops above me. As the sun can t get thru the trees to dry the road there it was cooler and the roads were still wet from the last nights rain. We got to Victoria and went into Trail Appliances to look at kitchen stoves for our house. We picked one out and will order it and hope to get it in by Christmas. The ride home was great and we stopped for gas at the Co-op station. Fueled up at $1.23 per litre. Got caught in one more small shower on the way home but still no rain gear. Started raining after we got home and is pouring rain this morning. Glad we got out when we did. Submitted by: Dave Truesdell December Gathering winner

Page 5 LIGHTER SIDE Definition of Old I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair. She turned to me and asked, "Are you having it catered?" And that, my friend, is the sad definition of "OLD"! I've sure gotten old! I have outlived my feet and my teeth I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license. THE SENILITY PRAYER : Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests. First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart. Mike was going to be married to Karen, so his father sat him down for a friendly little father-son chat. He said, "Mike, let me tell you something important. On my wedding night, in our honeymoon suite, I took off my pants, handed them to your mother, and said, "Here - try these on." She did and said, "These are too big, I can't wear them." "I replied, "Exactly, I wear the pants in this family and I always will. Ever since that night we never had any problems." "Hmmm," said Mike. He thought that might be a good thing to try. On his first honeymoon night, Mike took off his pants and said to Karen, "Here - try these on." She tried them on and said, "These are too large. They don't fit me." Mike said, "Exactly. I wear the pants in this family and I always will. I don't want you to ever forget that." Then Karen took off her pants and handed them to Mike. She said, "Here - you try on mine." He did and said, "I can't get into your pants." Karen said, "Exactly. And if you don't change your smart-ass attitude, you never will." And they lived happily ever after. Submitted by Dave Elliott "Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed. "Why Wal-Mart?" "Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week" Submitted by Shirley Williams

Page 6 Donna Kuluski - Dec. 20, Oct.13, 2018 When Karl called in October to give the heartbreaking news, I thought it could not be possible, because Donna seems so young. That thought reminded me of when we first met Donna and Karl they seemed so young then too. Most of us were at least into our forties, and they were in their thirties. Chapter D at that time was an assortment of folks with varied circumstances, jobs, and financial situations. The Kuluski s were drawn to GWRRA by their love of motorcycling and the fact they owned a Goldwing. In those early days, in BC-D, Karl and Donna were the kids. It had not been long since their arrival from Thunder Bay. They lived in the apartment close to Guildford, and drove a big car, affectionally known as the bird. Their introduction to GWRRA came through Sam Kingston at the bike show and before long they were deeply connected and absorbed into BC-D. Donna was never a fan of starting out early in the morning. Oh, she liked the starting out part, just not the early mornings. Donna was the first person who introduced Chapter D to the phrase: crack of noon, as she found the crack of dawn a bit daunting. Donna s unbelievable skill with numbers was put to good use as treasurer. She was able to look over a column of figures and give the answer in a heartbeat. A group of bikes could pull into the restaurant and hardly looking up for a second glance, she could say table for 13 or 17 or however many we were! She had the further skill of sorting out a group restaurant tab, telling everyone their share with just a quick glance at the bill. And she was the only person I knew who could recite her bank account, social insurance, driver s license and health care number, and she knew all of Karl s too. Donna was an incredible cook, great perogies, and a talented baker as well. Her banana cream puffs were a legend throughout the greater biking community in at least two provinces and several American States. The year before Glenn and I joined the chapter, I ve been told specifically of an early Gold Run, going down the Duffy Lake Road the year before it was paved. They stopped in a rest area after the rough ride, and there was great concern for the precious cargo in the trunk of the Kuluski s bike. Heaven forbid the cream puffs, carefully wrapped and keeping cool in the top trunk, should be damaged. They were so popular, known to be enjoyed at rallies and rides through biking season, and at social events throughout the winters. Her skill at money management carried on from Chapter BC-D treasurer to the District treasurer position. She had great faith that with good money management, everything would work out ok in the long run. She didn t see the need for worrying in the meantime. The district at that point came with a very low bank balance and an upcoming rally to fund. She was able to convince Ken Higginbottom to bank roll part of the provincial rally, financing it on his credit card, and she was right. It all worked out in the end. The district ended up with seed money for future projects and Ken ended up with a paid off visa bill. Donna s successful money management had prevailed. Donna s parents died young, and she also suffered the loss of a much-loved sister at a young age too. Her perspective on aging was undoubtedly affected by these losses. She frequently said while she believed in making a plan for retirement and the future, it was really essential to live in the moment, and to do what you really wanted to do as soon as you could, rather than waiting. She lived life to the fullest. As with most of us, GWRRA became Donna s quirky sort of extended family. Many of us were on scene with our muscles for the Kuluski s move from the apartment to their townhouse. They worked hard for the next few years to secure their financial future in this beautiful home. She created and perfected many delicacies in her wonderful new kitchen. She shared the lives of her extended family with us too, both in pictures and telling us of the successes and events of the next generation. She certainly didn t wait for retirement to enjoy many, many cruises always one in April when she and Karl celebrated their anniversary. And yes, by 55 she retired as she had always said she would! In 1996, GWRRA poet Grant Eisworth wrote a tribute to BC-D exec and what he said sums up our time with Donna: When approaching this lass, please heed all the warnings For it seems that in fact, she doesn t do mornings. She likes lots of number, this cute little honey. For you see it s her job to handle the money. And when the whole chapter pulls in to eat She knows at a glance, how many to seat. So rest in peace Donna, our young friend. The ones you ve left behind, including your GWRRA family, remember you fondly and wish you God s speed. 8 Page 8 DISTRICT DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Fellow Wingers: With 2019 upon us, I can t help looking forward to our District Events and the next, fast approaching riding season. The number of riding options being provided by the district and chapters in our district is overwhelming. Looking for riding options? Check there you will find 2 scheduled District Rides, The District Rally "Wings in the Cariboo", Victoria Days Rally as well as "30 plus" organized rides on the lower mainland ride schedule. This does not take into account other chapter ride schedules in the District, also available on the District Web Page. If you have questions about any of the rides do not hesitate to Keiller Gowans our district ride coordinator; rides@gwrranwc.com. He has put together excellent rides for us this year. There should be no reason this year to not get out and participate in one or more of the scheduled rides. Another Vancouver Motorcycle show has come and gone, our District participated and had what I believe to be one of the most successful shows ever. We "spread" the word, signed up a significant number of new members and created a presence amongst the British Columbia ridership attending the show. I want to send thanks to the many volunteers that contributed their time and efforts to support us at the Vancouver motorcycle show; especially Gisselle Collins & Dave Ward for the countless hours of effort they put in to making the show happen for our district. Giselle was at the show all 3 days and literally put over 30 hours in herself. Gisselle was exceptionally organized and everything went very smoothly thank you for job well done! Working toward our goal of an ARC at each Chapter in 2019, Gavin McKenna & I will be in contact with all Chapter Directors to arrange for dates and venues within the next 4-6weeks. We will also be reviewing the levels program and encouraging everyone to enroll, upgrade or renew their levels status. We will also be working on hosting MFA's (Medical First Aid Course) at all chapter levels to enable members to ease into the levels program. Stay tuned for program notices. Riding season is getting closer daily and I am excited to take advantage of all the riding opportunities. I would like to see a "profusion of participation" from all chapters at all riding events this year. Let's make it the best riding season ever! Thank you for a great start to this year! Thank you for being members of GWRRA; your membership and participation is what makes GWRRA the finest international riding association in North America. Until I see you all again, Be safe Ride safe. Respectfully Kevin Bramhoff District Director District N.W.C "The Great North West Coast"

Page 10 50/50 ARTICLE Winter Riding As we do winter riding there are a few rules that are unique to the season. The weather is the main one in that it controls the situations in which we find ourselves. Wet roads, icy roads and even snow on the road will force us to slow down and to be more aware of the other drivers, mostly cars and trucks driving and sharing the road with us. We also must be aware of debris on the road from past storms and left over leaves from trees that become slick when riding on two wheels. Over the years I have noticed that it is more crowded on the roads and it seems that motorcycles are often overlooked by drivers that do not seem to see us as they are driving around, so making sure the bike will perform correctly will save us from injury. With these things in mind we can still have fun all year long with our bikes. Submitted by: Doug Conley January Gathering Winner We also must make sure our bike is in the best condition it can be, so before taking it out I would suggest doing a T- Clock check each time.

Page 11 RIDER EDUCATION LOGGING ON THE NATIONAL DATABASE To Check your GWRRA Education History and Levels Status You are now in charge of checking your own Education History and status in the National Database. Chapters no longer officially have a Rider Education Officer and no one at the Chapter Level will have access to the National Database to be able to check on everyone s status in the Levels Program. Did you know that you are able to look at your own history!! So how do we do this??? 1. Go to 2. Select Programs and Rider Education TAB. 3. On this new page, select My R.E. Information 4. This brings you to a login page. Your Username is your GWRRA Membership number. Your Password is your Street number of your address followed by the Month/Year of your GWRRA membership expiration date. For example: if your address is 2378 Main Street and GWRRA membership expires in June 2019, the password is Give it a try and check out your Education History and Levels Status. So what Level are you and are you Current?? Log on and see your status!! 1. Now you are logged on and are looking at your page. Here is what you will see. At the top of the page is general information about you. If you see something that is not correct, do no worry. It can be corrected. Simply contact GWRRA Home Office. One of the nice people will assist you to correct the problem. As a note: You are the only one that can have the info changed. No one else! 2. The next section is Chapter info. This shows what chapter you are affiliated with. By the way, you can have more than one chapter on this list. 3. The section after that is Rider History. It shows what level you are at and when you received it. It will also show if you are current in the Levels Program. It also shows your current mileage, both safe and high mileage. 4. The last section on the bottom of the page shows Training History. As you can see it does not show much, don t worry. Take your cursor and put it on the word- HISTORY. Now it will show all the training that you have taken in Rider Ed. The bottom will show key training that was done for the levels program. There is also an indicator there that will show if you are current in level 2 or higher. Taken from ON-S January Newsletter
