The Caravaner Welcome Lazy Dazers To Vail Lake Resort The Drifters want to thank all of the host tent volunteers and others that helped make our job easier. Without your help hosting would be a job that the groups maybe would not like to tackle. We had 67 caravaners, including one first timer, who all spent a very pleasant time this month at Buena Vista. We were treated very favorably by the weather. It rained very briefly on Wednesday morning with some cool wind. In the afternoon, the sun came out and the wind almost disappeared. We did have a camp fire that night and the rest of the nights after. As always Saturday was the fun and popular washer toss tournament. Rosemary Krause and Willie Judd survived some very close and competitive matches to win. Leonard Crocker, who conducts our church service, was unable to attend when his refrigerator refused to work. We are lucky to have a dedicated person who stepped in for Leonard by the name of Jack Walker, who incidentally has only been a member of the club for a very short time. Joe Fletcher and Merlin Thimlar stepped in also at the last minute and took care of the coffee chores. Thanks again to all of you that helped. Lazy Daze Caravaner 1

March Air Force Base Tour March Museum. January 19, 2012 By Jack Walker Thursday morning, 14 wide-awake LDers loaded into their toweds and made the short trip to the AFB Museum at March. A few had been before long ago, but wanted to re-visit. Annie, the museum manager, arranged for a superb tour guide, Retired AF Sgt Bob Mauge, who would prove to be a virtual encyclopedia about every aircraft we saw. Annie also agreed to give the group rate, even though we were less than the 20 minimum. Bob described for us a vivid account of aviation, from the Wright Brothers to the SR-61. His stories and recounting experiences kept our attention while imparting significant info and details. As he was describing the Wrights brothers, we almost felt Bob had been there! He explained easily and clearly key unknown events about WWII, such as dropping the A Bombs why the B-29 never flew in battle over Germany, and even the back story of Gen Horner s strategy for the US Iraq air war. Several times Bob asked if we had enough. The loud unanimous reply was always NO, more please. He even extended our tour until Annie the manager had to almost drag him away. We all felt it was a most memorable morning; would encourage everyone to pay a visit and ask for BOB MAUGE as your docent guide. Our patriotic pride deepened with a new respect for the tens of thousands of 18 year olds who bravely fought and defended our freedom in enemy skies. 2 Lazy Daze Caravaner

Anniversaries First Timers Allen & Sue Mercer 50 Caravans William & Sharon Ramsey Hesperia, CA Painted Turtle When we first started making afghans for the children at Painted Turtle Camp there were about 500 campers enjoying an experience of a life time just being a camper instead of a very sick person. From the Editor The deadline for articles is the Sunday following each Caravan. Thank you for your continuing support in the production of the Caravaner. David Hurley Rig #229 PO Box 3155 Ontario, CA d.churley@verizon.net This year they will offer some 800 children an opportunity for a week of bliss and fun. It is so nice to know that we play a part in this amazing effort to give these kids something great to remember. Your afghans and pillows and quilts all add to that experience. Thanks to Joyce Hirst, Connie Williams and Zoe Caires, I went home with 15 afghans and 4 turtle pillows to send to the camp office. Team Turtle is an amazing group of dedicated committed ladies to the cause. All sizes of afghans are needed to be matched with 7 year olds to 17 year olds. Quilts need to be quite large as they are used as bedspreads in the camp sleeping quarters. Jane, the Collector Lazy Daze Caravaner 3

Murray Family Farms The Drifters visited the Old Tomato Weigh-Station. It is located on Copus, just off Highway 5. It is the smaller of two Family Farms where you can buy your favorite seasonal vegetables and various goodies to snack on. David and Carole Hurley drove 40 miles to the Big Red Barn where they have a full restaurant serving Breakfast Lunch and Dinner. Both venues feature a Petting Zoo for the families. We enjoyed their Okie Fry Pies. I am sure they are not on the Weight Watchers list but they sure are good. 6 Lazy Daze Caravaner

Mother Nature Mother Nature was delighted to see several robins at Buena Vista, one on Tuesday and three by the end of the week. Spring will arrive along with the return of the migratory birds. Empty nests in some bare trees testify to the presence of many more species of seasonal critters. Small, pendulous, woven nests swayed in the breezes. The smaller ones may belong to bushtits and the larger, longer ones perhaps to orioles. Horizontal limbs held larger nests which were anchored by smaller vertical branches. Mama birds need a secure home in which to raise the next generation. You couldn t help seeing the million or so (at least a hundred) American coots or mudhens. The black, chicken-like poopers have chartreuse legs and semi-palmated (lobed) toes. They tipple over on the lake to eat vegetation in the shallow waters. A solitary western grebe floated on by and a great egret flew above silently searching for a better fishing spot. He ll take frogs, snails, freshwater clams and insect larva as well as fish. Meadowlarks were spotted as they sang their little hearts out while showing off their bright yellow, chest feathers edged by a black necklace. Other field reporters told of hearing the owl(s) and one of you had your head buzzed by a large, silent bird of prey in what appeared to be a dive bombing. I saw, and Greg Young photographed, a Cooper s hawk after it swooped over my cat who was beside my rig fixated on a western pocket gopher hole, one of many. Fluffy never saw the hawk as she quivered in anticipation of prey of her own. I have the head of one (zip-locked) to show you later this week. The solitary grackle must have been an early arrival. He was chatty and made a variety of sounds. Day time coo-coo ing attested to the presence of mourning doves. Juncos don t have time for chatter as they are busy on the ground looking for seeds and the occasional insect. House finches chirped away hoping to attract a mate. A red-tailed hawk was seen, but I think it it was the Cooper s hawk who tore into a coot and later took the remains up into a tree for some privacy during his feast. Ground squirrels were seen as Mother zipped around on her travel bike. Under two big pine trees, I finally found an intact owl pellet that was regurgitated prior to taking another meal. Nearby were pieces of tiny skulls and leg and wing bones, weightless really. I never saw the owl in the tree or out flying, but I have evidence of its presence (also zip-locked) to show you when we meet for a walk at Vail Resort. Listen for an announcement on Friday or see me at my rig amongst the Outbacks. Lurlie Edgecomb #2285 doing duty as Mother Nature Lazy Daze Caravaner 7

LAZY DAZE CARAVANERS TRAVEL TO ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA 2011 Sunday, September 25th, 13 Lazy Daze rigs left the Indian Hills campout in Tehachapi, CA for the Albuquerque 2011 Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. The first night was spent at Blake Ranch in Kingman, AZ. There the Spencers, Katharine and Dave met up with George & Joanne Watson, Bob & Joanne Wayne, Mike & Sandi Martel, Marlin & Peggy Zabel, Byron & Mona Shaner, Vern & Charlene Tutterrow, Mike & Dottie Baird, Bob & LuAnne Lowe, Larry & Sharon Turner, Don & Rosemary Webb, Betty Boschma & Bill Arthur, Randy & Lynn Murray & Jack & Jeannette Walker (newcomers to the caravan.) Our wagon masters, George and Joann Watson, having been to the Fiesta before, had generously given their time to plan the itinerary. Bob and Joanne Wayne were our tail gunners and tail gunners they were never letting a one of us out of their sight. Monday, we left for Black Bart s RV Park in Flagstaff, AZ. Located on the property is Black Bart s Saloon-Music Revue offering a menu with a wide selection of delicious foods served ranch style. The best part of the evening, though, was the entertainment. The entire dining room staff (singing waiters & waitresses from Northern Arizona University) sang songs from favorite Broadway musicals. And, yes, Black Bart himself has quite a colorful history. Wednesday, we arrived in Winslow, AZ at the La Posada Hotel (Ex-Harvey House & The Last Great Railroad Hotel.) We were permitted by the owner to dry camp in the parking area outside the hotel. The restored hotel is splendid & known as a national treasure - a masterpiece of art and architecture. A must for those who have time to stop in Winslow. Oh, did we mention the food served in the Turquoise Room was unique and delicious! Gallup, New Mexico was our next stop. Thursday we stayed at the USA RV Park. This park had BBQ and ice cream available in the evening. We dumped there as the parking at the Fiesta campgrounds offered no amenities, i.e. dry camping only. Friday morning, early, all 14 of us arrived at the Balloon Fiesta campground. Linda Leach had been our contact for RV parking at the Fiesta. She was there with many other Lazy Daze rigs from all over the country. Saturday morning we arose at 5 a.m to take the buses to the balloon launching site. Peggy was a runner for one of the Balloons (i.e. helped to get it set up and then put it away). What a beautiful sight to see the glow of the burners in the dim morning light and then the balloons launch one by one until over 500 balloons of all shapes and sizes were in the air. If you think you have seen it all in pictures we can only compare it to saying you have seen the Grand Canyon in pictures and don t need to be there in person. For seven days we awoke at dawn to see the balloons take off. Each day we would hear people from our group say they would take no more pictures and yet each day we took more. Rosemary alone boasted of having taken over Not everyday was perfect weather for launching but the balloons were up seven of the nine days. And some balloons did not make it to their landing sites...landing instead in among our motor homes. Several of us ran to the aid of the balloonists to steady the baskets and help fold the balloons. While there some of us took side trips to Acoma (Sky City) a Native American pueblo built on a 367 sandstone mesa dating back to 1100 A.D.; Santa Fe by railroad; Old Town Albuquerque by tram; the Cumbres & Toltec narrow gage railroad trip starting from Chama, N.M.; and shopping and dining locally. On the return trip home the Spencers toured Carlsbad Caverns; several of us drove to beautiful Canyon de Chelly National Monument in AZ on the Navajo Reservation and the Walkers and a couple of others went on to the Grand Canyon. Once again a special thank you to George & Joann Watson and Bob & Joanne Wayne for their planning and leadership. You are simply terrific! In closing we believe we can say, a good time was had by all! Katharine Spencer and Sharon Turner 8 Lazy Daze Caravaner

SAFETY TEAM There is nothing more important at a caravan than your safety. This is the primary focus of your Safety Team. The volunteer members are: Joanne Wayne, Chairperson-Outback Sandi Bartel, Assistant Chairperson-Roadrunners Mike Bartel-Roadrunners Robert Wayne-Outback Lurlie Edgecomb-Outback Sandy Young-Outback Greg Young-Outback Peggy Zabel-Drifters Bob Lowe-No Mads Dave Spencer-No Mads Al Granger-No Mads Ruben Pasillas-No Mads Bob Schmahl-Firesider Ann Cook-Firesider Howard Cleek-B scratchers Steve Tivy-At Large Louise Parth-At Large It is our wish that there be at least one member from each Lazy Daze group on the Safety Team. If your group is not represented, it would be great to have someone volunteer. Any one can be a member of the Safety Team. Awareness of an incident by a team member within a group could prevent a problem from becoming an emergency. The closer we are to a problem the quicker the response from the Safety Team. We always have a thoroughly supplied and up to date First Aid Kit at the host tent. There is also a a blood pressure monitor there as well. The Lazy Daze Caravan Club has purchased an AED (Phillips Heart Start Home Defibrillator) and is kept in Joanne s rig (Outbacks). When I am not at the outing the AED will be with Sandi Bartel, Assistant Chairperson (Roadrunners). IMPORTANT! If there is a situation when someone is ill, loses consciousness, 911 should be called immediately. There should also be a Code Blue announced, immediately, at which time the AED and members of the team will arrive before the paramedics. The AED will be brought to every medical emergency even though it may not seem to be needed. You never know what is going to happen. Better be safe than sorry. As was mentioned in the beginning, there is nothing more important than your safety. Most of our Safety Team members have under gone American Red Cross Training in CPR and the use of the AED. Each meeting we focus on review of stroke, heart attack, choking, CPR/AED and other medical conditions. Each month I try to review and add something new. Code Blue is not often called, thank goodness, but your Safety Team is there to help. Joanne Wayne, Safety Team Chairperson? EMERGENCY? 10 Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 66 Water Pump Silencing Kit 03/2012 My 2001 Lazy Daze Rear Bath came with a ShurFlo WhisperKing water pump. The flow rate never gave more than a dribble out of the toilet wand. After a few years I replaced it with a problem plagued ShurFlo SmartSensor water pump with a 4.0. gallon per minute (GPM) capacity. The first 4.0 pump would just randomly quit, think for a while, and then after what seemed like an eternity, would run again. The second 4.0 pump would only quit on extremely low flow and was satisfactory for several years. I recently replaced it with a ShurFlo Revolution 4008 pump with a flow rate of 3 GPM. I wanted to be able to change out the pump without draining the fresh water tank so I installed a ball valve on each side of the water pump. I wanted to eliminate the sharp 90 degree elbows that Lazy Daze installs at the pump so I added a pump silencing kit. I also added a probably redundant check valve on the outlet side of the pump. New installation parts list: Pump Silencing Kit Camping World $26-$28 American RV $18 ShurFlo Revolution Water Pump Camping World $90-$111 American RV $66 ½ Inch PVC Ball Valves (2) Home Depot $3 each ½ Inch PVC Check Valve Home Depot $7 American RV $11 (ShurFlo) Plus some assorted PVC fittings (Hint: Use solvent glued PVC fittings) Sources for parts: The not quite original layout.
