As NOMADS we thoroughly enjoyed hosting at Vista. The weather was almost picture-perfect, as reported each morning by Steve Tivy. Sure wish we could bottle and take it with us elsewhere, Seeing 64 rigs in neat rows was really neat, including 10 Nomads. Many found walking around the museum grounds to have surprises. While riding on the wagon, Ed Widmer pointed to a tractor that he adopted during his years as active member and volunteer. Oh by the way, Vista was Ed s 304th Caravan!! Thursday evening a large group went to the Elks Club to BBQ steaks, while the Nomads dined next door at Ciao Italian. There was discussion around the group campfires about possible new things for entertainment at future sites. Three LDers have volunteered to research and seek options for consideration. Among Nomads came suggestion for next year at Vista - having a Blue Grass music group and catered dinner; just one of several ideas already floating around. We re sorry to see longtime Nomad Randy Murray put his rig up for sale. We certainly wish him well in his new future. This comes after Dudley & Marilyn Varney sold their rig last year and now reside in Hemet. Bunbuster, FLORENCE MOORE #647 recently had shoulder surgery after she had suffered a fall late last year. It was a bad month for shoulders. Drifter, JANE FLETCHER #1658 earlier last month suffered a stroke. She is now going through physical therapy. Another Drifter, GEORGE REEDER #1397 recently had two heart attacks. Back Scratcher, ELIOT SHIMER#2815 earlier last month had melanoma surgery. It is with a sad heart that I mention Drifter, CAROLE HURLEY #229 lost her major battle with cancer on February 5th. 5 Mother Nature February s caravan to Vista had about 65 of us dry camping at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum. We had a big, level, dry field surrounded by trees and underbrush which was harboring creatures that we usually heard rather than saw. The male red-wing blackbirds were staking out their territory in the cattails and other dry looking reeds. When the females have decided on a mate, they will build their nests down in the plant life above the water line. Frogs serenaded us from this area every evening. The Museum leases many acres from Rancho Guajome Adobe County Park. Further west is Guajome Regional Park; both were part of a 2,219 acre Mexican Land Grant. All that we could see--hills, homes, fields, marsh and barn area--all this was part of that grant. Eventually the County of San Diego bought what was left of portions of the original ranch. Walking slightly uphill, many of us visited the sheds or barns with displays of some really old farm equipment. There was activity in the building housing the weavers and their wares. The Gift Shop was open, but the snack areas are only open when a big activity is taking place. Hay wagon rides were given by docents who used one of the old, but still powerful, tractors to pull us around the Museum property. Ed Widmer pointed out an engine he used to use to operate a sawmill that was on this property. Guajome was the name given to the rancho which had some springs on it. In wet years, the water level would creep up to the lower stone wall at the back of the adobe. At these times the frogs really multiplied and the night sounds were more noticeable. Though rana is Spanish for frog, a docent told me that guajome was another term meaning, she thought, place of the frogs. Even in this dry year, there is a serenade from the much drier marsh area between us and the adobe. Too much rain is a problem as the adobe bricks can erode. Tours for school children includes lessons in making the bricks that were necessary for the construction of this enterprise. A tour of the adobe and the chapel and the ranger s talk was worth the $3.00 fee. The Couts-Bandini marriage in 1851 resulted in 10 children, some of whom went on to have 10 of their own. The home was started in 1852 and was added to over time as the family grew and they entertained. The hacienda was completed in 1855 at 7,000 square feet and 28 rooms plus out buildings and a chapel. The elaborate headquarters was the center of huge ranching and orchard operations and was also known for its hospitality and fiestas. Next year take the time to walk over to the adobe--tours are usually at 12 and 2. On the way over, you may see California towhees, the white-tailed kite (that s a bird of prey), red-winged blackbirds (the female is plain brown and streaked), lizards, a few butterflies, and perhaps a red-tailed hawk. In camp in the afternoons, we experienced large flocks of crows. In the evening you might have heard the killdeer as they flew somewhere. If the walk is too much, the drive is short. Go out of camp to the traffic light, turn left and go to the second driveway on the left, about 1/2 mile west. Enjoy the restoration work. The organ is quite old but still works; a CD is available. The view from the second floor sewing room gives a clue to why this was Mrs. Couts- Bandini s favorite place. She certainly would have had plenty of light for sewing for all those children. I will be getting a wish list of other things to donate to the summer camp as well as continue to accept afghans. So keep them coming if you are of a mind too. This summer camp for critically ill children is a huge moral booster and is often the only chance these kids get to have fun with a bunch of other kids with the same illness. They can play, make things, do (fishing riding swimming), sing and just be happy without the constant reminder of a medical environment. The staff, counselors, nurses and doctors volunteer their time knowing that the benefits are most positive for the kids. Also the kids go to a one week session for free. As you can imagine this is also a blessing for the devoted parents. I will try to have some new material and pictures to show you at Live Oak during the Craft Sale that might give you some idea of the camp and why Lazy Daze supports it. 7 REMINDER FROM YOUR SAFETY COMMITTEE Daylight Saving Time began Sunday, March 8 this year. It is recommended that fresh batteries be installed in safety devices such as smoke detectors twice each year when it is time to change the clocks. If you did not yet do it this year, please consider getting it done ASAP. With regard to disposal of used batteries please see the article regarding battery safety below. Lazy Daze Caravaner 7

8 Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 90 FORD FUEL PUMP 03/2015 The in-the-fuel-tank fuel pump is shown below: The top the fuel tank sits only a few inches below the floor of the coach making access difficult. The diameter of the round plate at the top of the fuel pump assembly is 7.5 inches. The height of the assembly is 14 inches. Line A provides fuel for the Generator and ends above the bottom of the fuel tank so that the Generator can not run the tank dry. Line B provides fuel to the fuel injectors. Line C returns the excess fuel back to the fuel tank. The fuel level Float is indicated by D. A coarse fuel filter is the bag at the bottom, just below the actual fuel pump. The wiring harness remains outside the fuel tank itself. Fuel pump failure is often an intermittent condition indicated by the starter spinning the engine normally, but the engine never catches. It acts as if it is fuel starved. Sometimes the engine can be started by waiting and trying again, or by using starting fluid. Once the engine starts, the fuel pump may work normally for a while, maybe for months, before it lands on Green Double Zero again and leaves you stranded. Fuel pump replacement can cost from $700 to $1500 depending on labor rates and local factors as it requires dropping the fuel tank. If you need a tow, be sure to request a Flat Bed tow, or insist on having the drive shaft disconnected for a conventional front wheels off the ground tow. Another problem associated with the fuel pump assembly is when the rubber connecting hose on the A Line above the fuel tank develops cracks or a leak that allows air into the connection when the Generator fuel pump is working. The Generator will then be fuel starved as it is easier to pump air rather than lift the fuel out of the fuel tank. A person with long arms and small hands might be able to replace the hose, the tank can be lowered to replace the hose, or the fuel line can be bypassed. 10 Peggy Zabel (The Pegster) Thank you to all of you who ed me and/or talked to me about the charity project flyer I sent out and had at the Vista Caravan. The overwhelming vote was to make U.S. Troops Drawstring Bags at the Live Oak Caravan Outing. It was also discussed and approved to make the May Live Oak Outing an annual charity sewing/crafting event. Those who don t sew/craft, there is still a lot of things you can do to help out! The pattern calls for: One yard of Fabric 17 high x 30 wide Drawstring cord 1 yard It also lists cord locks as optional item. The fabric should be denim or something that will hold up to heavy use by the soldier. I purchased a yard of denim at Joann s for $9.09 a yard but saved 40% using a coupon. The cord was $1.99 a yard. I will have patterns at Lake Perris and for the actual sewing event at Live Oak in May for those who are interested. My personal goal is to have completed a bag by the Lake Perris caravan! I am trying to get everything in order before April 8th. I will be leaving town for a while and will miss the April outing. We will have a Women s Only meeting at Lake Perris on Friday. If you pay for Saturday night and then decide to leave early, please inform the host tent before 9:00 am on Saturday that you are leaving and want to donate to the club. If you tell the host tent, the club will be able to keep your Saturday night camping fees. If you do not tell the host tent, the campground will get a night s fee for a night that you are not even in camp. Dry Camping Hints The club is putting together hints for dry camping and how to get the most usage out of water, electric and holding tanks, to be published in the Caravaner. Please send your ideas, whether it be one suggestion or numerous, this will be running articles or hints, no deadline.
