1 The Caravaner Welcome to Live Oak! Hosted by the Roadrunners Our first time to Tucalota Springs was a big success. We had great weather, 73 rigs and one first timer. Upon arriving at the park on Tuesday morning, we set up the host tent and then checked out the facilities. There was a nice sized recreation room, with a kitchen and microwaves, plus two smaller rooms, and a lounge with Directv, a computer and a free telephone with long distance calls also free. There was also free wi-fi which we were able to get at our campsite. Jerry Saladino, the manager, was working around the park, even broom swept dirt from the road. We had full hookups, a small store, a swimming pool and a fishing pond. The park and all the facilities were well maintained. There were many things to do in the area. Some went golfing, some drove to Hemet to eat, some drove to Temecula, and quite a few visited some of the many wineries in the area. Also the Cahuilla Casino was a short distance away in Anza. The Friday Couples Washer Toss Tournament set a record with 36 teams. Hosting the caravan was much easier than you might think. It was almost like working a shift greeting arrivals at the host tent. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated people such as Dave Spencer and Roger LaPorte. Any minor issues we were concerned with regarding park rules were resolved prior to our hosting period. This is a park that everyone looks forward to visiting again. One concerning issue was when Alice the rabbit disappeared when she fell down the rabbit hole, but we were very fortunate to have John Mailliard at the caravan. He rescued Alice and put her in the washer toss tournament as he was short of ladies. The Drifters want to thank everyone who volunteered and helped out, it made our job much easier. Jan wants to take this opportunity to thank all those who have pitched in to make this position A Piece of Cake! With so many within the Caravan Club volunteering to help, this activity has continued to be a fun way to meet others and add a spark to our General meetings. A Big Thank You to each and everyone! Jan and husband Bob anticipate moving to Arizona this summer, and Jan is happy to announce that Sue Mercer will be taking over her position. Sue has been busy reaching out to our Lazy Dazers to build her new committee, assuring us that Pot of Gold will continue. Thank You Sue, and thanks again to all who helped. 5 Wine Tasting Adventurers REMEMBER MICKEY AND MINNIE MOUSE WASHER TOURNAMENT LAST JUNE? If you remember last year we had an impromptu Mickey and Minnie Mouse washer toss tournament at Hurkey Creek. Well, the same two people who thought up this fun tournament are doing it again and John will monitor the mice that will be playing. So get out your ears, pick your own partner and sign up in June. Remember, its women against the men so play well ladies for the men beat us last year. The tournament will be played on Friday and, to avoid the morning meetings, will be held at 1 PM. Jane did good with her gift choices. We know because Roger LaPorte was a lucky Birthday winner and he was delighted! We are looking for volunteers to shop for Hurkey Creek (June), Indian Hills (Sept), and Live Oak Camp (Dec.). The Lazy Daze Caravan Club treasurer reimburses you for your purchases and you will be given an instruction sheet with number of gifts needed and step by step instructions. 7 "Dan Doran, the Fire Extinguisher Man" will once again be recharging fire extinguishers from 9 to 11 AM, Friday, May 7th. The recharging fee is $10.00 and a new extinguisher can be purchased for $ Please remember to label your extinguishers with your name and rig number before dropping them off. Name tags and tape are available at the Host Tent. Immediately following at 11 AM, there will be a hands-on demonstration on the proper use of a fire extinguisher. The location will be given during Morning Announcements. This will be Dan's 17th year servicing this vital equipment for our Lazy Daze Caravan Club, so let's show our appreciation with a great turnout at this important program. This is a must-attend demonstration,... if you have not recently used the fire extinguisher you carry in your rig for the protection of yourselves and your Lazy Daze neighbors. 10 Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 50 Fresh Water Tank - Filling from the Bottom 05/2010 The fresh water tank inlet tube on my 2001 Lazy Daze Rear Bath is a long horizontal run that ends in a 90 degree elbow before the water drops into the tank under the couch. Filling the tank is usually frustrated by burping and backflow at even low flow rates and is even worse if driver s side is on the low side of level. Here is a simple direct way, with minimal fabrication, to rapidly and safely fill the fresh water tank from the bottom. Caravaner John Beckman, Rig #2899, showed me this method using a standard PVC ¾ inch diameter slip by Female Hose Thread (FHT) fitting available at Home Depot ($1.54) or Lowe s Hardware. The fitting itself is there but may not be found with the normal PVC fittings. Sometimes I have found it in with the sprinkler fittings and sometimes it is in locations that defy logic, known only to an experienced employee or found by pure chance. The only adjustment to the Lazy Daze is to scrape off the undercoating from the fresh water tank drain outlet pipe under the rig. The fitting is just slipped onto the drain pipe directly or a horizontal version can be easily fabricated with a 90 degree elbow. Do not permanently attach the fitting to the outlet pipe, as if the low hanging fitting is struck, the drain pipe can be damaged. FHT x Slip Fitting Only FHT x Slip Fitting with 90 Degree Elbow Here is one procedure to fill your fresh water tank: 1) Open the locked potable water door and unscrew the white plastic cap. This will allow the displaced air to escape and water to easily escape if the tank is overfilled at a high volume rate. The tiny vent is inadequate by itself. 2) Attach the fitting to the drain outlet. 3) Open the tank drain valve to flush any dirt from the drain tube and fitting. 4) Close the tank drain valve. 5) Open the fresh water faucet to flush the drinking water hose. 6) Close the fresh water faucet. 7) Attach the drinking water hose to the FHT fitting. 8) Open the tank drain valve to connect the fresh water supply to the tank. 9) Open the fresh water faucet to start filling the tank. 10) When the tank is full, turn off the fresh water faucet. 11) Close the tank drain valve. 12) Remove the fitting from the tank drain pipe. 12 Goodwill Ambassador Report Outbacker, ROSEMARY KRAUSE #2348 was missing from Tucalota Springs due to a recent fall that caused some cracked ribs. BOB LOWE #2811 of the No Mad s a.k.a. The Owl Man didn t have his hernia surgery last month so he could get his name in the Caravaner again this month. Hopefully all systems are a go for him shortly after our Tucalota Springs Caravan. He likes to see his name in print. Don t we all. It was reported to me that a former member, ELINOR ROTHARMEL #1782 of the Single s group passed away on March 30th. Maybe some of you remember her as the Bird Lady as she had two parrots that would ride on the handle bars of her scooter. Many years ago, Lazy Dazer s held a spaghetti dinner for her to collect funds toward the purchase of her electric cart. HERB and DARLENE JOHNSON #2380 of the Firesider s, losted their 50 year old son-in-law due to a heart attack. No Mad s, ALICE PARRISH #2913 had knee replacement surgery on April 14th. So while the rest of her group was having a gay time around the camp fire she was otherwise occupied. EARL MOORE #647 At Large recently spent sometime in the hospital for pneumonia. His timing was so good that we saw him at Tucalota Springs for a few days. He shouldn t over due so we will see him here at Live Oak. Another No Mad, JOHN ARROYO #2856 had one cataract surgery on April 8th and has another planned for next month, looks like he is missing Live Oak and all the fun again. CARL ORR #2671 At Large, seems to be a very lucky fellow. Last February he was at Death Valley and had a stroke. To make a long story short he arrived at the E.R. in Las Vegas which took excellent care of him. A part of his recovery is the installation of a stent in his carotid artery on April 19th. They plan to be here at Live Oak in May. They usually attend both Live Oaks and the DVD s at Death Valley at New Years. You can identify their rig as it has some big eyes looking for you. 14 Mother Nature Lydia Granger and I, Sharon Turner, filled in for Mother Nature at the April Tucolata Springs Caravan. Let me start with a disclaimer: I do not possess Lurlie's literary talent nor observing eye for nature and so the following report will be brief and perhaps incomplete. Lydia and I took a short walk, past the emu cages to find a plethora of "belly flowers". Among the wild flowers we were able to identify were common owl's clover (a beautiful fushia), desert chicory, California goldfields, desert primrose, western blue flax, red maids, western peony (a real treat!), deerweed, arroyo lupine, rancher's intermediate fiddleneck, seamless hymanoxys,, caterpillar phacelia, baby blue eyes and chia. We looked and listened for birds. Some were easy to find such as the chickens, turkeys, emus and gorgeous white peacocks (who displayed their tails for us.) But we also found coots, mallards, flickers, quail, black phoebes, gold finches, lesser goldfinches, scrub jays, western king birds, ravens, crows and California towees. On the office porch were hummingbird feeders with obliging hummers and a female oriole. And I am sure there were other birds we missed since the from the trees could be heard a chorus of twitters and tweets. A walk down the entry road took us to another, larger pond than the at the campsite. There we heard and saw many bull frogs. On Saturday my five year old grandson (who arrived Friday) counted 32. Though I could not myself count that many I am sure he was correct. Among the tall grasses where numerous red winged black birds with familiar calls. On the return walk were assorted lizards...one I think was a marbled whiptail. Friday, LuAnne and another caravaner walked up to the top of the nearby hill and heard and then spotted a mature rattlesnake...probably a southern pacific rattler. Oh, and a coyote was spotted by one of our photographers. Also, hopping around the emu cages was a white rabbit who had escaped from the peacock cages. As mentioned on Friday my daughter (Laura) and twin five year olds (Hannah and Wyatt) came for a two day visit and then as a wonderful surprise at 9:45 p.m. another daughter (Stacey) arrived with twin eight year olds (Hailey and Katie). That night the children were truly snuggled all tight in the upper bunk as the three of us shared the roomy king sized bed below. The next day the children fed the caged rabbits and baby bunnies carrots. Later they found a centipede but thankfully didn't pick it up. Sunday morning before departure my eight year old granddaughters found a live baby rattlesnake. Saturday, on the walk out to see the bull frogs, the groundskeeper stopped to tell us to look out for rattlesnakes and the children were able to see the dead baby snake she had in the back of her cart.
