Camping season is upon us. Time to hit the road. That means Walkersville (hint hint). We really need participation from existing members (we miss all of you) as well as recruiting new members. Don't forget about the cadet program which gives new members a free membership for six months. Looking forward to both of our state campouts. We are open to any suggestions regarding entertainment, crafts, games etc. Please contact any of the Executive Board members with the ideas. ************************************************************ GREETINGS FROM YOUR MD/DC STATE DIRECTORS Joe and Peggy Lins ( ) Spring at last time to dust off the camper and head for Walkersville. The Cadet Program has some changes. The free membership is now 6 months rather than one year. However, it is still a great way to invite friends to come, learn about FCRV, enjoy the fun and fellowship we all enjoy and hopefully become a member. Your chapter president has information and application forms. There is a great N.E. Regional (Maine to DC) campout planned for August 15 th to 18 th at Ross Hill Campground in Lisbon, CT. Information and application forms will be available at Walkersville. The 2013 National Campvention will be Iowa details are in the Camping Today magazine. July 2014, the N.E. Region will be hosting the National Campvention in Vermont. Please plan to attend and, if possible, volunteer to help. Please mark these dates on your calendar. COME CAMP WITH US! Page 1

2 Disaster and Safety Awareness Team Joe Boswell, D. A. S. A. T. Coordinator for Maryland/D.C. Preparedness is the name of the game. Ask yourself are you ready? Floods, tornados, wind shears, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and even the all mighty derecho are all parts of the up-in coming weather situations that might appear in the next few months. As you travel about this camping season it is important that you are able to access the National Weather Service stations advising you of the possible weather condition so you can stay alert and prepared to take action as needed. It is important to understand that the radio stations you have been listening to while traveling on the road may not be giving reports for your traveling area. Once you have stopped for the night at that special campground TV coverage may be also lacking. In an effort to stay alert to any changes, purchase a weather radio. With just one simple adjustment to the right NOAA alert station this can and will make all the difference. They are available at various stores throughout the area. Spring is here and we should be aware of dry conditions because of the lack of rain. Especially in the early spring and fall months the lack of rain could lend itself to brush fires. The old adage is if you smell smoke, fire is not far behind. A fire can start from a cigarette that someone tossed out the window along the highway, or the campfire embers that got away. During really dry conditions a fire will spread quickly and before you realize it, it is out of control. Sometime taking the extra step of having a watering hose, or five gallon bucket of water close to your campfire is always a great safety precaution. Remember the old motto by Smokey the Bear s motto Only you can prevent forest fires. How true he was. While you are camping in Walkersville, walk across the field and pay a visit to the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department. It is always a rewarding experience to chat with the local rescue individuals and see their various pieces of apparatus. It can be very educational and rewarding opportunity. Hopefully, everyone will take advantage of the Emergency preparedness displays surrounding the carnival grounds. In each event listed above, the key to your safety is heeding the warning signs, having the necessary resources to keep you informed and finally addressing the question what can I do to be adequately prepared. Taking some simple steps will keep you, your family, friends and neighbors all safe during any type of emergency. Safe camping, everyone! Madison and Michael Mitchell help demonstrate what alcohol does to your motor skills and perception during a DASAT presentation. Events of Special Note at Walkersville! Friday evening at 5:30 pm we will have a covered dish supper for those who would like to get together. Bring a dish to share, your table settings and a beverage. Do you have a hobby or skill that you would like to share with your fellow campers? Saturday afternoon from 3 to 4:30 pm is your opportunity to bring examples of your work or hobby to display and describe to all of us who will be yard sale shopped out! If you have questions about this Share Your Hobby event, please contact Pam ( /grab1010@comcast.net). Saturday evening at 7:30 pm the country band, Back Roads will be providing music for your listening (and dancing?) pleasure. Page 2

The only thing we ask is that they pay the registration fee of $8.00 which covers them for insurance purposes. This is for campers who do not belong to a FCRV chapter.
