The Unexpected Adventure 1 It was a warm spring day on Hope Creek Farm. The family began their day as usual. The farmer and his wife woke up early with the rising sun. It was time to begin the daily chores. 2 While the farmer s wife went to the barn to feed the cows, the farmer took care of feeding the horses. Then, they walked hand in hand back to the house. It was time to wake their children, Meg and Henry. 3 Rise and shine, called the farmer. 4 It s time to get up and find an adventure, coaxed the farmer s wife. 5 Meg bolted out of bed. She scurried to Henry s room to give him some encouragement. Henry, Henry, get up! It s time to explore beyond the barnyard, cried Meg. 6 Henry was suddenly awake and out of bed. He was full of questions. When are we leaving? Are we going beyond the fence into the meadow? Are we going over the hill? What do you think we will find? Can we go now? 7 Whoa, whoa! said the farmer. First, you must get dressed, eat breakfast, and do your chores. 8 So, everyone finished breakfast and started the household chores of making beds, clearing the breakfast table, and washing the dishes. Can we go now? inquired Henry. 9 Henry was so anxious to begin the daily expedition with his older sister, Meg. They had always been restricted to the barnyard lot. Meg had celebrated her twelfth birthday yesterday. Now, their parents were allowing them to expand

2 their boundaries. 10 You may go wandering after you complete your chores, replied the farmer s wife. Your sister and you must take care of the chickens, pigs, ducks, dogs, and cats. They will need food and water. 11 After taking care of the barnyard animals, Meg and Henry raced toward the barnyard fence. They climbed over the wooden planks. They were in the rolling meadow. Both children giggled and laughed with excitement. 12 The children skipped and played their way through the meadow. It was a peaceful place! They stopped occasionally to rest. These stops were filled with lots of chitter-chatter between the siblings. 13 Also, the children enjoyed spying and watching the small field creatures. They saw grasshoppers, butterflies, birds, mice, and chipmunks. These small creatures were jumping, flying, and scampering through the field. 14 At the top of the hill the children saw a most unusual sight. In the next meadow, Meg and Henry saw a colorful cloth spread on the ground. A huge brown basket was on the ground beside the colorful cloth. Both children were intrigued by these items. 15 As they moved closer the children were greeted by a very tall man. He answered all of the children s questions. And, Henry had lots of questions. 16 The man was a hot air balloonist. He was preparing for a flight. He asked, Would you like to go for a ride? 17 Of course, Henry eagerly replied, Yes! 18 But, his older sister wisely said, Henry, we must ask mom and dad. 19 So, the children quickly ran back to the farm. Meg and Henry traveled back over the hill, through the meadow, and through the barnyard. They told their parents about the enormous balloon. Also, they told them about the chance to ride. 20 Meg, Henry, the farmer, and his wife made the journey back to the hot air balloon. The tall man was all set up and loading into the basket. Again, he invited them to join him for a ride. Nervously, the family climbed aboard the balloon. 21 They flew over the hill. Then, they flew over the meadow. And, they flew over the barnyard and their house. Everything seemed so small! 22 Meg and Henry were looking for an adventure beyond the barnyard. And, they found one! It was a wonderful, unexpected adventure.
