1 September 1 st, 2013 Volume 2, Issue 9 The Monthly Chatter Editor: Michael Till September 7 th is the 2013 Carl Springer Memorial Golf Scramble. This is a great time to get a team of golfers together, clean your balls, and hit them with a crooked stick. You can do it all at Lakeland Golf Course in St 8:00am. If you don t have a team, just get with Mike in the parts store and he will get you set up. The cost for the outing is $60 w/ dinner included. Lostcreek-Shelby Rd Fletcher, Ohio Poorfarmerrvs.com (937) The Carl Springer Memorial Antique Tractor/Engine Show & Flea Market Sept 19 th 22 nd The fairs are over and all of the lil children are back in school; so now what is there to do. I Know! Let s have a big tractor show and Flea Market. We have these shows twice a year, but the fall show has special meaning, because we honor the memory of Carl Springer. Some of you old timers knew Carl very well and some of you have never met him. Carl Springer was the original Poor Farmer. He purchased this land in the early sixties and started planting. In 1964, a couple of guys from the area asked Carl if they could camp on his land and Carl, being a considerate host, said yes. At this moment in time, Carl had unwittingly started what is now Poor Farmer s RV. The name Poor Farmers originated through one of Carl s favorite hobbies, Citizen Band Radio, or CB radio. Carl would get news, traffic, and weather reports from all over the country from truck drivers, police and of course campers. When folks would ask who he is, he always gave the same response, I m just a Poor Farmer. The name Poor Farmer became Carl s CB handle which would one day be a world famous campground. In no time, Carl was riding around on his three wheeled golf cart sneaking up and scaring the devil out of people. He would always be forgiven since he usually had some ice cream to share. Guess we know where Steve gets that love of ice cream from. Along with farming, starting a business, and raising a family; Carl was also active in the Masonic lodge and the Shriners. I have never met Carl Springer, but I have heard many great things about him, and it makes me wish I would have. Here s to you Carl, may you never feel the need to strike me down from above for the decisions I make. -Mike Till

2 The Monthly Chatter Page 2 of 6 Labor Day Weekend Blow Out! Labor Day weekend is normally a busy camping weekend, however, this year was especially busy due to the Gentlemen of the Road tour which had a stopover in Troy. In addition to the folks that were trying to take advantage of the longer weekend with a camping trip, we also hosted a number of concert goers, young and old. This weekend was a campground manager s dream. I received a great deal of compliments about the campground, our staff, and the accommodations we provided for our guests. I also received quite a few compliments from our permanent campers directed at the Mumford and Sons group. I have been saying all weekend that if this group was any representation to the group in Troy as a whole, then Troy could have run the entire weekend on a skeleton police force and been just fine. These young music lovers were respectful, clean, polite, and most of all, quiet at night time. One group that was not so quiet was the Sowery reunion. Of course, they had to be loud because they were our BINGO callers on Saturday. Thank you to all those from the reunion who helped make sure that everyone got their BINGO fix. I would like to extend another thank you to The Starlight Cloggers for a great performance on Saturday night, and to Spotlight Productions for hosting karaoke on Sunday night, which was the best karaoke turnout that Poor Farmer s has ever had. Thanks to: Jamie, Rose and Walt Craig, Melissa Bercot, Janice Werts, Denise Bronne, Brian, Amy, Jason, and Kyle Sturgill, Charlotte Tweed, Kelly Snider, Jolene Krebehenne, Alice and Kenny Everett, and of course Lynn Kritzberger. 3 Page 3 of 6 The Monthly Chatter Fun at the Fairs! By: Jason Sturgill August 9-15 was the Miami County Fair in Troy, OH. There were all kinds of animals, rides, and much more entertainment at the fair. I had a great time at the fair. We also celebrated a very important birthday for Steve Springer. It was his 62 nd birthday on the 14 th, and it was a blast! My brother, Kyle, showed rabbits at the fair and did very well in his 1 st year showing. There were many folks at the fair that we met that had camped at Poor Farmers when they were younger. Another thing we did to spread the word is handing out bags that said Poor Farmers RV on them. Everyone loved their bags, and told a couple of stories about how they camped at Poor Farmers when they were younger. Another fair that Poor Farmers RV participated in was the Champaign County Fair. This fair was also very exciting. Country music singer, Craig Morgan sang in concert, and I got to go to it! It was a great concert he put on. The 3 rd fair we went to was the Shelby County Fair. They had the demolition derby, Human Tractor Pulls, and much more! My dad participated in the Human Tractor Pulls and got first place in the class. I got a kick out of watching younger kids about 8 years old try to pull a big tractor, but they did a pretty good job. They even got to pick their own team names, and some were hilarious. Thank you to everyone who helped out at the fair, and thanks for supporting us through a very busy couple of weeks. And thank you to everyone who read my article!!! Dutch oven Lasagna While at the fair, I went to pick up some meet & greet passes for Hinder, the lady told me that I was too late. My response was simply, That s okay, I was having some Dutch oven lasagna and some candy shop pizza. She looked at me like I was some kind of funny guy, but I knew what I was talking about. Thank you Denny and Jacque Shoenleben for coming out to the fair with your little wagon of heaven so Dad, John and I could enjoy a taste of home. -Mike

4 The Monthly Chatter Page 4 of Coachmen State Rally at Poor Farmer s RV By: Melissa Bercot Oh me Oh my! What a fantastic weekend. The State Coachmen Rally was a huge hit. As you can tell I had a ton of fun taking the photos while laughing with everyone. They kept moving around and I had to chase them! Boy was I tired! The food was spectacular and I say that because now my pants are a tid bit snug! Watch for me running through the campground this week! Ha! Now, I can t forget the parade. I laughed when Andrea told me what we were about to do. Between the corn, hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, breakfast, noodles, mashed potatoes, ice cream, pie, doughnuts, and whatever else we could get our hungry little hands on; I am surprised we had the energy to function for the activities, but we did and it was fun! The games were a hit. Bessy the milk cow was udderly the best part! Mr. Mike Till came in first place with 11 ounces milked in 15 seconds! GO MIKEY!! Did anyone see the extremely talented golf kart band? I m sure you didn t at first but I am very positive you heard us coming. A total of 12 carts and approximately ½ people attended. We were celebrating a tradition that started a long time ago. It was my first time attending this event and when Andrea asked me to join in on the noise making I could not resist. You see, I am a loud one on a regular basis but it sure did come in handy for this. The noisy nuisance band members had a blast along with the campers. Some laughed, hooted, hollered and one even chased us with a hose! HAHA ya missed me! Church was great Sunday morning and we were all sad to put an end to this year s rally. Knowing what is in store for next year is very exciting. I was very happy to be a part of the Pound Puppies weekend rally. Meeting all of you and sharing the laughs and a few tears was a memorable experience and I will never forget it! Thank you again for coming together here at Poor Farmers and creating memories for everyone forever! Until next year! Site of the Month Doug & Sue Pratt This month s Site of the Month goes to Doug and Sue Pratt. Doug and Sue have a beautiful site in Hobo Junction that is inviting, relaxing, and colorful. These two youngsters take the time to plant flowers, hang bird feeders, and meticulously arrange every stone on their lot till they are satisfied with their summer home. Seriously, I have seen Doug out front yelling at a pebble for rolling out of place. I m not saying he is getting senile or anything, just particular. After the great flood of 2013, Doug was always there to watch us get the lots back into condition. He would offer ideas on how to do our job better, ask a bird for more advice and then kick our shovel over and leave when we didn t listen. Again, I m not talking senility; he just wants things done a certain way. Sue has done a great job of keeping herself out of the loony bin by getting away from Doug to go golfing and hang with family. They will be leaving soon to head back to their winter estate in Florida; before they go, I would like to say thank you for creating such a beautiful site and making this month s Site of the Month and easy decision.

5 Page 5 of 6 The Monthly Chatter A New Halloween at Poor Farmer s October 12 th, 2013 This year Poor Farmer s illustrious activities committee has made a change to our Halloween schedule. In past years, we have combined Halloween with our annual pig roast. The kids would walk up and down the aisles of the shelter and collect massive amounts of candy. This year we have decided to give Halloween a weekend all its own. On October 12 th, Poor Farmer s will host a begger s night and a haunted barn. There are many different things happening this weekend; like a contest for the camper who decorates their campsite with the best Halloween theme. This contest is for permanent and weekend campers and a special prize will be awarded to the winner. On Friday, the 11 th, the activity committee will be in the big shelter setting up the haunted barn. If anyone would like to help, just show up with whatever Halloween decorations you have left over and join the fun. Spotlight Productions, our karaoke pro s, will be providing the sound effects and fog. On the night of the 12 th, we will be running the wagon to and from different points in the campground so that the kiddos can trick or treat and the parents can check out the decorated sites. The haunted barn will open around six o clock and close once the last victim is done getting scared out of their pants (Don t worry parents, the haunted barn will be kid friendly). I would like to thank the members of Poor Farmer s Activity Committee: Rick and Deb Levally, Denny and Jacque Shoenleben, Rick and Cindy Mangen, Alice and Kenny Everett, Larry and Barb Slusser, Roy Steele and Frankie Morrow, and of course, Dick and Nancy Hile; these Poor Farmer s have been doing a lot to make the activities great as well as making sure that future activities are bigger and better. Come on out on October 12 th and prepare to be scared at the amount of candy the kids get.

As you have read, the pig roast will not be combined with Halloween, so we will find other activities to keep us busy. We will have a corn hole tournament before the pig roast and during we will be giving out awards to our campers. We will also be having a 50/50 drawing and, of course, lots of food. Make sure you bring your table service and two dishes to share; I would like to clarify that the dishes you bring must have food in them. Sign up in the parts store, the cost is $5.00 per person and kids under 6 are free. This is our chance to have one final blow-out before the end of the season. See ya there! Guess the Year Go Bucks!!
