1 ENGL-3 Mia's Hot Air Balloon Ride [Exam ID:29V7SF] Scan Number:9396 Read the following passage and answer questions 1 through 18. Mia's Hot Air Balloon Ride 1 Mia could not sleep Saturday night. She was too excited about her hot air balloon ride the next day. It was a birthday present from her family. They knew it was something she had always wanted to do. 2 Early Sunday morning, Mia started to get ready to go. It was getting late so she ate her breakfast in a hurry. She didn t want to miss this thrilling adventure. 3 We need to leave! exclaimed Mia to her family upstairs. 4 It s too early to be perky, said Mia s mom. 5 Mia s family slowly got ready. Mia anxiously waited in the living room. She was trying very hard not to get mad. They were running late. Finally, Mia s family was ready to go. Mia put on her big coat, gloves, and hat. She knew that it was going to be a cold morning. 6 They finally got to the place where the hot air balloon would be taking off. The pilot was blowing hot air into this big, colorful balloon. All of a sudden, the balloon became huge. It was as big as a planet. The morning light shown bright and it was a beautiful day for a ride. 7 This is going to be the best day of my life, said Mia to her family. 8 You picked a perfect day to go up in the sky. The wind is calm and the sun is out. Also the leaves are changing colors. What a day! the pilot said happily. 9 It was time to get into the big basket with the pilot. Mia s big sister, mom, and grandma went up with her. Off they went high into the sky. Mia was a little

2 scared at first. Her mom held her hand and soon she felt better. 10 There were so many things that they could see being so high up in the air. Everything on the ground looked like ants. It was so peaceful most of the time. The pilot would pull a switch that blew hot air to keep the balloon up high. 11 There is a deer galloping in the woods. Wow! yelled Mia s sister. 12 Oh, I see horses eating hay near the red barn! said Mia s mom. 13 Mia had a big smile on her face the whole time. After an hour, the pilot told them to hold on tight because he was about to land. 14 The hot air balloon landed gently on the ground. It was such a great experience.
