April 2006 Tallahassee Chassee Traveling in the Past and Present 10 vehicles were present for the short tour and show for the Lanark Village 50th Anniversary Celebration. 3 other vehicles showed up from other clubs for a really nice turnout on a beautiful spring day. As noted later, it was perfect convertible weather. A short drive on the back roads of Wakulla and Franklin Counties brought us to this sleepy little coastal town previously part of Camp Gordon Johnston, an Army training base during World War II. Members were able to browse through a good sized flea market as well as a couple yard sales in the community. Our hosts plied us with coffee and soft drinks and really made us feel at home. This being a community of mostly retired persons, our cars (and one motorcycle) were a big hit among the residents. The Tallahassee Region Antique Automobile Club of America Club Members Help Village Celebrate 50th Anniversary From Bill Thompson: Event Coordinator Joan Matey, the organizer of the 50th anniversary of Lanark Village activities called today to ask where to send the check for our club's participation last Saturday, so I gave her our treasurer's address. She also was writing an article for the Carrabelle newspaper regarding the club and mentioned the Hollingsworth's 1953 Ford Crestliner convertible that carried the "king and queen", and the Densmore's 1930 Studebaker roadster with rumble seat that carried her in the parade. Everyone she talked to really enjoyed the cars and appreciated our participation. The Cancer Society sold donated items at the flea market and raised well over a thousand dollars on Saturday so they were very happy about that. We joked about the Volunteer Fire Department's kitchen being swamped with customers for lunch and barely having enough food, but everyone at least got fed. Since it was a first time event, they would love to do it again and make some changes to improve the schedule. It was a perfect day weather wise and everybody enjoyed the ride down there and back. We owe the Hollingsworth's a big "THANK YOU" for their work in preparing the route down back roads going to the event - that was a springtime treat! The ride back was a blast also in our little MGB convertible, that earlier was inspected by a young girl and her dad during our show. After looking at all the big American cars and then finding the MGB, she said "that was just her size and she wanted one". Neat. Check out the pictures on page 9. Our new members are Wease Kaylor and Sue Aigotti. Opening Remarks - Gary Edwards Congratulations to Bob Love in obtaining his 4th "Master Webmaster" award from the National AACA for our website. In addition, the "Chassee" received the 2nd "Award of Distinction" also from the National (this is another of a long line of newsletter awards the club has received over the years). Bob is both the club Webmaster and Chassee editor. 50/50 Drawing - Shirley Benson was the lucky winner (although Larry said it was his ticket!). Committee Reports Treasurer - Andy Mohney Details are available from Andy. Sunshine - Shirley Moore/Sharon Palmer The following were reported to have considerations: Lynne Koelliker Bob Spiegel the Grahams Belle McCollum Jon Thomas Carol Love is recovering well from her recent surgery and attended the meeting. David and Lynne Taylor's daughter has had an auto wreck and is recovering at home. Neal Davis and Norm Madsen both lost parents recently. Short Tours - No report Long Tours - Dan Rainey Dan is working on a long tour to the Americus, and Andersonville Georgia area. This will most likely be an overnight tour perhaps the last weekend in April. Details will follow at the next meeting National Tour - Bill Thompson Bill reported on progress in planning. Tentative dates are still in the fall, November 1-3, 8-10, 0r Possible conflicts with the FSU/FAMU football schedules will still have to be addressed. Club members are requested to volunteer their help in the many aspects. It will be necessary for ALL members to participate in order to have a successful tour. National AACA has acknowledged receipt of our application.

Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 Page 3 Announcements & Reports Gary reiterated that we have been invited to participate in the Lanark Village 50th Anniversary Celebration March 17-18, There will be dinner on the 17th and a flea market & car show among other events on the 18th. The club voted last month to make participation in the car show a club activity. Nell Hollingsworth reported on the Quincy Gulf Station open house on March 11th. There were approximately 32 cars participating throughout the day. Neal Davis reported on the Soap Box Derby preparations. The race itself will be held on Saturday, June 3, Neal is the overall chairman this year and appealed for help in selling ads for their program. Sign up & clinic for participants is scheduled for March 18th Shirley Moore and Jerry Wise reported on the Amelia Island Concours d'elegance car show held on March 10-12, This is not your "average" car show to say the least. Their feature car was the Alfa Romeo! They sold $14,000,000 worth of automobiles at the event. Shirley and Jerry did not mention what they might have brought home from this weekend. Bob Love reported on a problem we had with a copyright infringement last month. It turned out that an article published in the "Chassee" was copyrighted and we had to pay the author for using it. We have to be sure anything we submit for publication is either original or we have permission to use it. Just because it appears on the internet or is found in an old magazine does not insure protection for our use. We believe items taken from the National magazine can be used. At any rate, we will be extra careful in the future as to what gets published. Bob stated that there is enough talent right here in the club to provide material for publication. Old Business The 2007 Tour was discussed above. New Business None Coming Events 1. The Lanark Village Celebration listed above. 2. Classic Chevy club's 20th annual car show at the Lee Vause Park, Old Bainbridge Road, on April 8, Streerodders 21st annual car show also at Lee Vause Park on May 20, AACA Winter meet in Mobile on March 18, See our website calendar for ongoing events. Click on Club Calendar Also, visit the National website for National AACA activities Program The program this week was presented by Larry Benson who gave a talk and slide show. The subject was "Can an automobile be too well built?". The automobile was the "Alco" by the American Automotive Company which also made railroad equipment. Railroad equipment has to be "well made" and the company followed suit in their automobiles. This proved to be non-competitive, it took them 18 months just to build one! They went out of the automobile business in Next Meeting & Location Will be April 11, 2006 at the Tallahassee Antique Automobile Museum. Devoe Moore will host the meeting and describe his plans for expansion and moving of the museum. Our caterer will provide the food as always. Respectively submitted - John Schanbacher, Secretary

Page 4 Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 What s It All About? By Club President: Gary Edwards Antique cars are all about doing something we enjoy, together with others who share a similar passion. In other words, Tallahassee region AACA is all about having fun! Of course, having fun in a group setting requires the joining of creative ideas, planning, organization, and purposeful energy (yes, even fun requires some work, but that can be fun and rewarding!) In other words the engine in our organization is activities. Earlier in the year, I asked members for some feedback, and many of you responded with some great input. Overwhelmingly, the number one activity for most of us is (you guessed it) touring! So far we ve had some great short tours led by Ed Shuler & Nell Hollingsworth. Dan Rainey promises to lead us in, not one, but two long tours this year. Several of you responded to the question of how we could increase our visibility in the community and attracting new members. Ideas suggested included doing a show or having some type of monthly cruise in addition to our monthly meeting. Many of us drive our AACA antiques to the various cruise-ins of other car clubs, like the Capital City Cruizers; Street Rods; Ford, Chevy, or Corvette Clubs, etc. I think it would be a terrific idea if we also held a monthly cruise-in event and invite the other clubs to hang out with us like we often do with them, plus we could display our banner and audio visual display at these regular events. All we need is a Cruise-In Chairperson and secure a regular time and place for this event. If someone steps up to the plate, I am confident that both out Board and our members would support this. Another interesting idea that was shared that I ve heard from others in somewhat different versions is a new take on a tour or car rally. Each car on the tour would be given a set of clues to follow and would end up at a mystery location to presumably eat together or share some other common activity. I m sure Ed Shuler or others on the short tour committee could put together a short tour using this idea. Sounds like lots of fun to me! Some other ideas for activities that would be fun that also were suggested: an Old Car Owners Ball, a dance with music and clothing of a certain era; a show and shine of our antique cars at a local school or other venue where young people are present and we can introduce the next generations to the hobby, some how-to clinics (like the one recently held at Neal s garage) to learn more about different phases of restoration and repair. What s it all about? It s about wonderful activities and events that we create and in which we participate. Don t be a spectator, join in the fun! Phone Committee: Bill & Judy Brundydge, Chairpersons Glenda Schanbacher Shirley Moore Sharon Palmer Welcoming Committee: Bill & Nancy Thompson, Chairpersons Jack Hanbury Tom Link Shirley Moore Sharon Palmer Historical Committee: John Wells, Chairperson Bill & Nancy Thompson Publicity: Bob Love, Chairperson Tom Link 2006 TRAACA Club Committees Sunshine Committee: Shirley Moore & Sharon Palmer, Chairpersons (No additional members signed up for this) Short Tour Committee: Ed & E lane Shuler, Chairpersons Nell Hollingsworth Pete Zulinke John Schanbacher Bob Brown (Note: if any of these members wish to serve on Long Tour Committee, please contact the Chairperson below). Long Tour Committee: Dan Rainey, Chairperson Jack Hanbury Program: Norm Madsen, Chairperson Gary Edwards Note from your President: Some of the committee chairpersons need the help of our members, in particular Shirley Moore & Sharon Palmer on the Sunshine Committee. It would be great if more of our members would help organize our club activities. We are all about having fun with our old cars and having great programs. We have a great club; let s make it even better by each of us contributing in helping our committees in creating great activities during the year!

Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 Page 5 From your reporters in the field: Ramblings and Rovings of Junkyard Dog & Fluffy Here we go again. On a trail that leads from North Florida all the way into Georgia. Thomasville that is. Here we found quite a collection of automobiles. The Gordon collection. This consists of everything from electric to 1950"s. Knowing Bob can t have all the pictures, here are some of the listings. Upon arrival we found a 1916 Studebaker. This car is used for touring. Brass????? 1912 Vella, Ford A model (a hack), very nice, Overland, Reo speedster, 1949 Chevy convertible, 1953 Chevy 2-door hardtop, 1956 Thunderbird, 1959 and 1960 Metropolitan. Then to go in total comfort they have a 1935 Packard, you guessed it, streetrod. This does not cover all of his cars as he has others in two more locations. Maybe we can work this into a short cruise before long. As ever on another trail, nose to the ground, we will see you around. Junkyard Dog & Fluffy 1909 REO 1953 Chevrolet 1912 Velle 1916 Studebaker 1930 Graham 1913 Detroit Electric Some cars have no problem with water! Water out the tail pipe. Some have it, some don't. If you have a sweet smell to the water coming out the tail pipe, that's antifreeze and you may have a problem. Lets talk about normal water: they all do it! Normal water comes from compressed air (your engine is nothing more than an air compressor half the time). Moisture in the air when compressed turns into liquid, and it comes out the tail pipe. Older cars with low compression don't often see water. As compression ratios increased in the 40s, 50s, & 60s, the water ran freely and ruined a lot of mufflers. Lead from fuel and water make acid, which eats mufflers out. With emissions controls, higher engine and cylinder temperatures would, along with high exhaust temperatures, keep the water in a steam condition and not show up as water on garage floors. When the humidity is high so is the water coming out the tail pipe; i.e.: early morning and rainy type weather. Happy Motoring, Neal

Page 6 Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 From the Archives of THE TALLAHASSEE CHASSEE Official Publication of The Tallahassee Region Antique Automobile Club of America 30 Years Ago: The April 1976 minutes from the archives are missing so there will be no report. 20 Years Ago: See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet...or Ford or Buick or Plymouth or whatever antique you have to drive! And that's just what 42 club members did on April 19th during the First Springtime Tour of The day dawned bright and beautiful - just perfect for a tour. There were 16 beautiful cars that met at Cross Creek Restaurant at I-10 and U.S. 90 East for breakfast. As everyone arrived they were put on film by Claude and Frankie Allen and Diane McCarthy. Soon, we were "heading out" east on U.S. 90. The tour went along smoothly (except that somebody didn't unlock the "powder room" in Newport) and we arrived at Wakulla Springs before noon. We had a nice parking area under the trees where everyone stretched their legs and admired each others cars. At noon we had lunch at beautiful Wakulla Springs Lodge. The food was great and a special thanks goes to Claude & Frankie Allen for the beautifully decorated cake we had for dessert. After lunch we had our business meeting on the veranda. Next, some of our new members introduced themselves - Anon & Marie Owens, Dave & Connie Soule, David & Dianne Krause, Phil & Lynne Koelliker, Pete Wright and Blair and Lorry Engle. FOR SALE: 1956 Chevrolet Belair 4-dr. sedan. Colors: twotone Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige. $2,100. Paul Dirks home (904) 562- etc. Good-bye until next month, Diane McCarthy (note: maybe we could view that video sometime at a future meeting?) 10 Years Ago: The April 9 Tallahassee Region AACA Club meeting was held at JB's Barbecue with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the business session afterward. Members expressed special happy 80th birthday wishes to Fred Tyler. Carol Rainey baked him a cake and the members sung the "Happy Birthday" song to Fred. The meeting was chaired by President Ken Hart who reminded those assembled about our commitment to participate in the second annual United Cerebral Palsy of Tallahassee Balloon Classic at Fallschase on Saturday, April 20. Ken distributed some National AACA membership applications forms and asked Secretary Carolyn Grimes to order more along with other AACA materials. An excerpt from an AACA National Headquarters letter was read by Ken about the necessity and desirability of attracting young members ages eight and above to the old car hobby. AACA National is developing a junior membership with special incentives and activities aimed at youngsters. AACA was requesting names of youths who might be interested in old cars along with a contribution to help promote the project. A motion to donate $25 from Club funds to this effort was made and approved. DeVoe Moore Opens Antique Car Museum The long awaited and much anticipated Antique Car Museum developed by Tallahassee Region AACA member Devoe Moore has opened on highway 90 just east of Capital Circle. At last report, Paul Chamberlain is managing the museum. Hours when visitors can see the cars are from 10 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday and from 12 noon until 5 pm on Sundays. Admission prices are $7.50 for adults and $4 for children. The museum's phone number is Larry Benson, Editor Next Meeting DeVoe Moore has agreed to do the program for the April 11th TRAACA meeting. He will enlighten club members on his plan for moving and expanding the Tallahassee Antique Car Museum! In fact, the April meeting will be held at the museum. The caterer will be serving our usual great dinner at 6:00 pm and the general meeting will follow at 7:00. (Plus a surprise video) For more about the museum, check the website at:

Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 Page 7 Getting To Know You AACA Member Profile: Russ & Nancy Haines Interviewed by Gary Edwards What is your occupation? Russ: Jack of all trades. Nancy: Retired. How did you become interested in the antique car hobby? Russ: In 1951, a Glidden Tour came through Ft. Wayne, Indiana. One of the cars was a 1913 Cadillac, owned by my neighbor s brother. I fell in love with old cars then, and it s continued since then. Nancy: My interest grew along with Russ s. How did you become a member of the Tallahassee Region AACA? Russ & Nancy: We went to the TRAA Christmas party in At that time it was the Ford Model A club and we had to get special permission to join since we had a Chevrolet and not a Ford! We drove the 1928 Chevrolet in the 1974 Springtime Tallahassee, the first year TRAACA participated in Springtime. We ve been members for 33 years. What was one of your favorite cars when you were growing up? Russ: When growing up I really liked the 1956 Fords. My first car was a 1951 Plymouth Belvedere. When I was 16 we had a 1928 Chevrolet four cylinder and later a 1929 Chevrolet six cylinder, so that s the reason for my collecting those cars when I got into the hobby. Nancy: I didn t have any particular favorites Plymouth Belvedere What is your favorite antique car? 1928 Chevrolet Russ & Nancy: No favorite, we like them all. (Interviewer s note, I ve got to think the 1917 Haynes is right up there!) Share a story about one of your cars that is a special memory? Russ: In 1974, when I trailered the 1929 Chevrolet from Kansas, I found out that it was covered with black shoe polish and it all washed off! Nancy: When our son, DeWayne, was three, he was able to open the door on the 29 Chevrolet, but our daughter, Peggy, who was two at that time, was not able to open the door of the car, so he would get in and pretend to take her for a ride, then leave her in the car and she couldn t open the door to let herself out! Another special memory had to do with Senator and Mrs. (Adele) Bob Graham and the 1929 Chevrolet. Senator Graham was running for Governor at the time and he rode on the running board during Springtime Tallahassee, while Adel rode in the car. Adele s favorite car was the 1917 Haynes. Is there another car you do not currently own that you d like to have? Russ: I d still like to get a 1956 Ford two door Custom Line. What do like most about the antique car hobby? 1929 Chevrolet Russ: I love to drive the antique cars, especially on tours. Nancy: I love to ride on the tours. What AACA National Tours and Shows have you participated in? Russ & Nancy: There are too many car shows and trips to list. One special show was in 1976 in Ormond Beach FL at a big show for restored GM cars where the 29 Chevrolet won the best Chevrolet in the show! Russ trailered the 29 Chevrolet and Nancy trailered the 28 Chevrolet to that show, In August 1977 we drove over 1000 miles from Tallahassee to Ft. Wayne IN in the 28 Chevrolet on a vacation.. AACA National events include 5 Glidden Tours, 3 Regional Tours, and 7 National Shows. We have 44 trophies from the various shows in which we participated. What other hobbies and interested do you participate in? Russ: Charter member of both the Blacksmith Club and the Big South Engine Club.

Club member Norm Madsen takes the 1917 Haynes of Russ Haines out for a spin, (though you can t see it, that s a grin from ear to ear on his face) then the 1931 Packard of Gene Densmore, with John and Glenda Schanbacher in the rumble. Norm had the best time of all as he got to drive many of the different vehicles that came into the station that day from the teens to the 60 s..

Tallahassee Chassee April 2006 Page 9 TRAACA members arrive and set up their cars for display on a beautiful spring day, Premium parking was provided on the paved lot in front of the Community Center. The crowds were not overly large but they were enthusiastic and really enjoyed seeing all the antique vehicles.
