1 Wasatch Front Chapter Newsletter February 2014 From The Vice President s Saddlebag. Hello to all WF-BCHU! As the newly elected Vice President of our chapter, I have been asked to introduce myself to everyone. I grew up in Bountiful/Woods Cross and graduated from Viewmont High School. I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Washington and Idaho. Deanna and I met after I served a mission and we were married in We have 6 children with 5 of them now married and starting their own families. That means 6 grandchildren and 2 more due within the next 2 weeks. Over the years, we have lived in Woods Cross, Ogden, Texas, Missouri, Plain City, Kentucky and now West Haven. We have no plans to move again. Weber State is the college I chose to attend and graduated in 1987 with a degree in Manufacturing Engineering. While in Texas and Missouri, I worked in the aerospace industry and got to work on 2 different stealth aircrafts. I have been employed by Autoliv for 24 years as either a Process or Quality Engineer. I got my first horse when I was in junior high and kept her in Woods Cross. Whenever we wanted to ride, we Continued on page 2... BCHU MISSION STATEMENT 1. Alan Phister will be point of contact for anyone who sees a trailer for sale that might fit our needs - about 12 feet long with double doors at the rear, preferably also with a single door in the front or side, & dual axels. Membership dues go up by $5 effective March 1, JOIN OR RENEW EARLY! (See article on page 3.) Please remember to update the membership fee on the blue pamphlets before handing out to potential members. Be sure to keep track of your volunteer hours and miles driven plus any equipment or livestock used for clearing trails. (This does not include pleasure rides but does include public meetings if you are representing BCH s interests.) Any questions on what counts, PLEASE ASK! (See contact info on page 3.) Next chapter meeting Feb 19 at 7 p.m. at the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District at 2837 East Highway 193, Layton, UT. Thank you! From the VP s Saddlebag...continued from front page would ride through Bountiful to get into the foothills. This was the start of having a horse or 2 around from that time up to now. One of our favorite things to do when we were in Jr. High would be to ride up North Canyon in Bountiful and camp out for the weekend. Like a lot of young men my age, I was raised watching John Wayne in all his great movies. This got me involved in Cavalry reenacting in later life. In 1992 I was invited to work as a Cavalry Trooper for a movie. Since then I have been a wrangler in about 10 movies, commercials, and a few Touched by an Angel series. We never make enough money to pay for all the gear and equipment we have acquired over the years. Over the years, I have been involved with reenacting different time periods: Indian Wars Cavalry: We have spent many summers in Wyoming playing with Indian re-enactors. 2. Civil War Cavalry: This summer with a few friends and my sons we hauled our horses back to Gettysburg, PA, for the 150th. 3. Old West Cowboy: Lots of riding, mounted cowboy shooting and even taking my chuck wagon out for 3 or 4 days at a time. 4. Our family also spends every Labor Day weekend at the Ft. Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous. A few years ago, we decided to go on a few rides with BCH so I could find a few new trails to explore. I had a great time and met some great people. This gave me the motivation to become a member and get involved. What I really like is that BCH has a stated purpose and a specific mission that will benefit all horsemen and women everywhere. I have spent years riding the front and back country and now it s time to give back and have a great time doing it. So I look forward to this summer and working on the trails with each of you. 3 Page 3 EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2014 RENEW NOW!! At the state general membership meeting January 2013, the motion was passed to increase dues by $5 per membership effective January 1, This was based on a dues increase from BCHA to help funding at national level. Our Wasatch Front chapter discussed the increase at the February 2014 meeting. The chapter membership decided to take the 2014 dues increase out of the chapter budget for those who join or renew early. Chapter membership also agreed the $5 dues increase for Individual and Family memberships would take effect on memberships paid after March 1, 2014! This Annual Pass pays for itself in as few as 5 visits and is valid for a year from the month of purchase. WASATCH FRONT CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Worst Mistake I Ever Made With A Horse.. When I was a kid in Riverside, California, I had the great opportunity to join a stable run by a local college. They had several horses available and not many riders. One warm summer day, my best friend and I decided we d take the horses we usually rode out bareback. We were just beginners at bareback riding and I guess I hadn t quite built up my inner thigh muscles to really stick to the horse. Well, our ride ended up taking us down a paved side street. We started trotting and sure enough I slid off and ended up landing on the pavement with my left hip. I thought I was going to die! It hurt so much! Luckily the horse didn t get away but I couldn t get back on so I had to walk the couple of miles back to the stables with an extremely sore left hip! Many decades later, I still have a raspberry on my upper left thigh that reminds me of that day. I eventually got much better at bareback riding before I moved away from Riverside. By the time I moved, my friend and I were able to take our horses over jumps made of standing 55 gallon drums without coming off. Just goes to show you you ve got to pick yourself up and get back on!
