Welcoming New 4-H Members Providing a place where youth can feel safe and welcome is one of the most important things that we do in our 4-H clubs. As new members join your club be sure to welcome them and help them to feel comfortable, safe, and that they understand what is going on. Joining any new activity can be scary, ensuring a welcoming environment can make all the difference in the success of a new member and their continued involvement. Communication with new members and families is very important. They will have many questions and will need help figuring out how everything works. Helping them feel like they can ask questions and have someone they can go to for answers is very helpful. Getting youth to be engaged with each other throughout their first year is crucial to creating a welcoming environment in a club. It s a great idea to pair up current members with one or two new members to help answer questions and encourage the new member to stay involved in project and club activities. Some of youth s favorite 4-H memories involve the friends they make and activities they participate in together! As the year goes by, be sure to know each member of your club s name, projects, and keep up the welcoming environment. Youth face a lot of stresses in their daily life. Our 4-H community can help create a safe, fun space to learn life skills, participate in group activities, and learn how to treat each other in a positive way! New Clubs Forming We are excited to announce new 4-H clubs forming this year! There will be a new club All About Rabbits lead by Jennifer Lehrer and Megan Phipps. The first meeting will be held April 5th at 5 p.m.located at the Donnelly Community Center. There is also a new Cloverbuds group forming lead by Britt Bonson. The first meeting will be held April 13th at 3p.m. at Donnelly Elementary. Both groups are welcoming members and are excited to get started! 11 11 Supplies you ll need: 1 bottle non-toxic school glue 1/2 to 3/4 cup Sta-Flo liquid Starch Liquid Watercolors Glitter Hard plastic straw Giant Reusable Bubbles Reusable bubbles using Gak and a little air to create these super stretchy bubbles Step 1: Make your gak. This is the material that will become your bubble. Combine the bottle of glue and watercolors together first. Add glitter as color is integrated into the mixture. Mix well with hands. Add starch in small increments while mixing. Mix and stretch until you reach the desired consistency (you could end up only using ½ cup of the starch--it depends on your preference). Knead together as if you are making bread dough. Step 2: Test gak to determine bubble-worthiness. Slimy, overly stretchy gak won t work for bubble making. So if your gak is still too stretchy, add more starch until you have a more viscous substance that, when stretched will more likely break into another piece rather than stretch. Step 3: Grab a blob of gak to eventually become your bubble. The larger the blob of gak, the larger the bubble you may create. Step 4: Insert your hard plastic straw into the blob. Don t allow the straw to go all the way through the blob, but simply halfway into the mound. Pinch the Gak around the straw to trap any air inside. Step 5: BLOW! You ll need to take a deep breath an blow hard to get the bubble started. Asking an adult to start the bubble may be a good idea, especially when you are initially working with the gak. Tips: Maintain gak in an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place. Plastic Tupperware is ideal. Sta-Flo starch can be purchased online or at a local craft store. Use liquid watercolors instead of opting for food coloring. Food coloring can stain clothing and surfaces. 11
