2 By: Dick Parkes A funny thing happened to me as I walked out our back driveway the other day. When I took the cover off of my VW Beetle, I was shocked to discover that the floor had fallen out (see photo). I am totally mystified! Was it rust, or explosive bolts, or just an inherent flaw in Hitler s Wunderwagen that occurs every 60 years or so? I wonder (wunder) what I should do now? About a year ago I sold (at a yard sale, no less) our 60 Ford pickup to Bob Simpson, an old classmate of mine. We were in the same graduating class (yes, I did graduate...somehow) and played in the Kam Hi Band together. I seem to recall an interesting altercation between us and.the Band teacher, but...that s another story! Anyway, in talking to Bob recently, he said that he had sent the truck over to Craig Beddie s garage where Craig is going to install power steering and brakes in it. Bob wants his wife to be able to drive the truck and replacing the Armstrong steering in that truck will definitely be an improvement. While visiting with John Bone recently, I got a free pass into his garage to have a peek at his latest project, a 1929 Essex, owned by Terry Shewchuk. This car was originally professionally restored by Edmonton Antique, way back in the early 70 s and sat in an un-heated, un-doored and un-floored shed in the yard next to Terry s for many years. He must be an excellent negotiator as he was able to eventually talk the neighbour into selling him this car, along with two other Essexes (what is the plural of Essex anyway?) Terry ordered a new wiring harness and tires for it but that s about as far as it got and it has rested in one of his garages for at least 15 years. Terry has finished a couple of other projects and when he decided to get the Essex on the road he took it over to John s for him to finish it off. John is working on the wiring and wheels and has sent the fenders and splash pans out to get repainted as a few rust bubbles had developed over the years. As you can see from the photo, this is another beauty. It makes me warm and fuzzy all over to see Club members helping each other out. John and Niki also have another new vehicle, a 1975 Ford Ranger F-250 XLT. I don t know how John manages to track down these cherry original vehicles, but he s sure good at it! 2
3 President Ray is having some teething problems with his recently acquired 41 Packard. He had to replace the gas tank and then found the exhaust manifold to be cracked and can t be welded, so he was fortunate to find a replacement in Tucson, which is on its way. Sure nice to have a winter project, isn t it Ray? I can t get around to everyone s garage so if you have something going on that you would like your fellow VCCC members to hear about, please let me know. Thank you. Dick If you know any member that needs a little sunshine please Contact Elaine Jones Our Sunshine Girl at joneselaine28@yahoo.ca Elaine sent a Get Well card to the Wendy Sparrow- FALL GARAGE TOUR Oct. 16 th By Terry Davidson THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE WHO WERE GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO ALLOW MYSELF AND FELLOW MEMBERS TO INVADE THEIR PRIVATE (PROPERTIES). The situation is that Denny s are kind enough to allow us to us their bar area which makes it a separate room from the regular restaurant. This room allows us to seat 32 for breakfast. So for future breakfasts those members contacting me after the first 32 or don t contact me may find that they will be sitting in the regular restaurant and not having breakfast with the gang. When you do contact me I do answer that I received your so you will know that you part of the gang Hope you can be one of the 32 for December Breakfast on Sunday December 3 rd. Thanks Dave 2018 MEMBERSHIP Ernie will be collecting your 2018 Memberships at the meeting so please bring along your renewals and your money. 8 What is a Governor? A Governor is elected at a Chapter Meeting for a period of two years. Then twice a year they attend a Governors Meeting for the Vintage Car Club of Canada. The Meetings are held in Merritt central to all Chapters. The meeting is held, if possible, the first Saturday in April and the last Saturday in September. The reasoning, for these times, is actually very simple. The Province of BC has new highway regulations, and snow tires are mandatory for all mountain passes during the months of October thru March. Also, at these meetings, a Semi Annual AGM is also held. All this must be done in fairly short order that those who have travelled a great distance, might actually get part or all the way back home that day. At these meeting, the Governors or Alternates of each Chapter or Club plus an Executive and a National Webmaster, sit down and discuss various items that will be for the betterment of the preservation of Vintage Cars and the Club. The VCCC is very fortunate as they have a very knowledgeable group of men and women that give freely of their time to assist all members of the association. There is good discussion at each meeting regarding past and future May Tours, the bylaws, the Vintage Car Magazine, the Roster, the Liability Insurance, Vintage/collector plates & many other items that come up during the year. Without the member and the associate members of the Vintage Car Club of Canada, our heritage in regards to the vehicles of the past would be lost. Presently there 22 chapters, plus some National only members 1182 members 129 associates 4 life members and 19 active members who are 50 or more year members. In the past few months 23 new members have joined the association and hopefully more will join as time progresses. Sue Wilson Not much to say. I hope you come out to the general Meeting on November 22nd so you can vote for the new executive. At least it gives you a feeling of belonging. I understand the tickets for the Christmas Dinner [P7] are going quickly and there is a maximum so get hold of Lila right away if you would like to attend. You will notice on the front page that they have just about sold their maximum number for the 2018May Tour 8
9 The Fuoco s 1929 DODGE Here s a photo of the family and the Dodge being loaded after it s long sleep. (L to R) Stephen & Sharon (Fuoco) Brooks & Reg Fuoco, missing from the picture is Mary Berusci 1929 DODGE BROTHERS STANDARD SIX For those who were not at the October general meeting, the Fuoco family, long-time residents of Kamloops, have offered our Chapter this 1929 Dodge Brothers 4-door sedan. Ray Fuoco, the son of the original owner, Benny Fuoco, was a charter member of our Chapter and passed away in The family has no expertise in old vehicles and the car has been sitting mostly idle for over 40 years in a little garage on Lorne Street, the former site of the Fuoco s Model Bakery. At the general meeting, it was decided to accept the car, subject to it being checked over to see if there were any major (read - expensive) problems with it. The Fuocos felt that this basically original Kamloops car would be in good hands in our care and it was picked up by a Car-Go deck truck on Tuesday, October 31 st. It was unloaded at Andy Cordonier s shop and given a wash and the rat mess was vacuumed out. A little closer inspection has revealed that it is virtually rust-free and even the seat springs are still sporting their original black paint. For a 90-year-old vehicle the original interior is in amazing condition, right down to a complete tool kit under the front seat. The odometer reads 44,577 miles and that s probably all there is. Craig Beddie has agreed to head up the project and at the first work bee on Saturday, November 4 th the car was put up on jack stands and the brakes were inspected and the engine, differential and transmission fluids were checked for water and/or metal particles. The brake shoes need re-lining but nothing nasty was found in the fluids. The plate glass windshield will need to be replaced and maybe new tires will be required. The compression in the engine was good and when some wires that the rats chewed are replaced, it will probably be fired up. Although there was some opposition to taking on this project, mainly due to costs, there is a significant difference between this car and the other vehicles in our fleet. The ambulance and wrecker required full frame-off restorations and the fire truck was treated to a very thorough cosmetic restoration. In comparison, this Dodge requires virtually no work (or major expense) and with the few items mentioned above, it will remain a showpiece and local artifact just as it is. We thank the Fuoco family for their generosity and their faith in our Club to preserve and keep this locally significant car in Kamloops. We also thank Andy for, once again, allowing us the use of a corner of his shop to work on the car and Craig for organizing its return to the road. Dick Parkes 9
