His birthday is actually on June 29 th. The party will be in the living room area of the Monroe House. A birthday cake and drinks will be provided. No gifts please. Just stop by and say hello, enjoy some cake and sign the guest book. Monroe House address is: 1405 South Monroe St Moses Lake, WA If you cannot attend, birthday cards may be sent to: 240 N Manzanita St, Moses Lake, WA Colfax (S94) Fly In Saturday, June 25 The Lewiston Chapter of the EAA is sponsoring an event complete with a Boeing 40C (oldest Boeing still flying) making an appearance at 10 a.m. A Stearman Speedmail and a WACO EQC-6 are also expected to join the vintage planes. Come for breakfast between 8 and 10. Visit with other pilots and admire the other planes that have flown in. Inter-State Aviation will be offering sight-seeing rides in a Cessna 182. If you fly in, shine up your bird and enter to win a prize. Some of the categories are: Best Experimental, Best Classic, Best Contemporary, Longest Distance Flown, Oldest and Youngest Pilots to fly in. One of our new WFF members, Barney Buckley, is organizing this event. Come support him. Boeing 40C will fly to Colfax

2 President Bob Clinesmith s Report Nice to hear that 2016 Tri-State was a success with a nice attendance. I hope everyone enjoyed seeing Maryhill Museum. Thanks to the members who worked on planning this Tri-State. We had a grandson s wedding the weekend of Tri-State held near Mt. Spokane State Park, so were unable to be in The Dalles. I have been busy working here at home on redoing our front door sidewalk with pavers, and repairing part of our patio with pavers & blocks. My wife wanted me to hire it all done, but it forces me to be outdoors and more active! Course I do get my fun activity in weekly on the golf course in Ritzville. Finally got up and mowed the runway and aired up the plane tires. Still have not had the plane out of the hangar since last fall. We did take a road trip to Montana in May over by Glacier National Park. It was not flying weather so a seven hour drive. Hope WFF members have a good summer and safe flying. Tri-State Convention in The Dalles, Oregon Attendees: Alberta, 4; Kansas, 1; Illinois, 2; Oregon, 7; Washington 14; for a total of 28 Region 9 Report Audrey Ledgerwood, IFF Region 9 Director IFF is doing well and still recruiting new members. We had a successful workshop in Las Vegas in February. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. We had good representation from Oregon and Washington. The IFF convention is coming up in July. We will have good representation from Region 9 with at least 6 or 7 going from Washington. Art Sager and Larry King are the Washington delegates. Colene Sager is on the publications committee, John Ledgerwood is on the resolutions committee, Audrey Ledgerwood is on the nomination committee and will do the invocation at the MOY/WOY dinner. Region 9 makes an impact at the convention. Thanks to the good management of Pat Amdor, IFF is in good financial shape. On April 30, 2015 we had a balance of $214,607 as of April 30, 2016 we have $206,983. The reason for the decrease is the board voted to help cover officer expenses for planning the conventions. The board felt the expense of visiting cities and setting up the conventions is a financial burden that would limit some capable people from becoming officers. Upcoming IFF activities will be Workshop in Yuma, Arizona and the 2017 Convention that will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A cruise to Alaska was mentioned as a possible 2017 convention, but when people added in airfare from the Midwest and East, it was too expensive for a convention. Perhaps Alaska will be a future tour. Saturday, June 4,

3 May Meeting Held in Kahlotus By Colene Sager Kahlotus, Washington: a tiny rural town out in the middle of nowhere, yet a convenient distance for our WFF members. Chris Clinesmith suggested that we go there for our May meeting and she made the arrangements. After we all enjoyed the great food, we had a meeting where we planned the meetings for the rest of (See list on page one of this newsletter.) What a delightful surprise to find a family owned restaurant filled with local memorabilia with many items passed down in this family. We had a room to ourselves that was reminiscent of a farm dining room. Care Network By Nina Richardson Debby Dammel is receiving physical therapy on her neck to stimulate & strengthen the muscles. Her epiglottis has collapsed and causes swallowing problems. The PT has helped some. Her general health is good. Her surgery in September 2015 was successful and revealed no cancer. Richard (Dick) Lawton has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is taking chemotherapy treatments. Family and friends are providing care for him around the clock. We had 20 people in attendance at the Farmer s Daughter Café and were treated royally by owners, Jim and Ann Moore. 3

4 Tri-State Convention in The Dalles, Oregon By Colene Sager The first weekend of June twenty-eight flying farmers checked in to Shilo Inn Suites Hotel on the banks of the Columbia River. We were greeted with a tray of meat, cheese, bread and condiments to enjoy at the 1:00 registration. The evening banquet was served at 6:00 and of course everyone sat with their usual people. There was a 20 minute break before our evening entertainment. All were encouraged to be back promptly as there would be a drawing for the early bird. Larry King s name was drawn out and he was surprised to open an envelope with a $20.00 bill. Audrey Ledgerwood and Colene Sager laid out the plans for the entertainment. They had each table count off and all the same number from each table moved to a table. Then the topic for the next 10 minutes was given. Everyone was a good sport and as the evening progressed, the visiting got louder and by the end of the evening, we all knew one another better. Breakfast was in the hotel restaurant. The friends plus the view out the huge windows of the Columbia River made this a special place. But we could not tarry too long as we were due at 9:15 in the lobby to carpool to the Maryhill Museum. We traveled upriver and then crossed a bridge to the Washington side of the Columbia River. The building looks like a castle, was built as a home for the Sam Hill family but never lived in, and now is the Maryhill Museum of Art. Sam Hill was in the railroad and road business. One of his great accomplishments was being instrumental in the building of the Columbia Gorge Highway. Why was it built on the Oregon and not the Washington side? In 1911 the Washington governor thwarted the construction of a highway on the north bank. In 1912 Sam Hill took the Oregon governor and legislators to Maryhill to demonstrate the experimental roads he had built in that area. By 1915 the Columbia River Highway was complete. Three miles east of Maryhill on the bluffs of the Columbia Gorge stands Stonehenge. It is a replica of the prehistoric Stonehenge in England. Sam Hill built it as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors of Klickitat County who gave their lives in defense of their country during World War I. Many different types of items all tastefully displayed. When we entered, we saw furniture, crowns, and jewelry that belonged to Queen Marie of Romania. She was a friend of Sam Hill and he invited her to dedicate the museum in There is a room off this entrance where there is a 30 minute movie telling the life of Sam Hill. (continued page 5) 4

5 Some of the exhibits are changing exhibits, so you will not always see the same thing. My favorite was the Native People of North America. This was the most complete and well displayed artifacts I have ever seen. Another interesting display was French miniature fashion mannequins. There were lots of them all clothed in the styles just after World War II. In fact, because of the lack of material following the war, these mannequins were used in theater productions as their clothes took a lot less cloth than a real person. Following this, reports were given and business items tended. Lorraine Gabel has offered to plan Tri-State next year and Ruth Kaser and Colene Sager have offered to help Lorraine. It will be the first weekend in June. A big thank you to the following IFF people for traveling so far to honor us with your attendance: Wayne and Terry Wilderman, Alberta; Zelda Lewis, Illinois; Diana Billheimer, Kansas; Merry and Jack Vandervalk, Alberta; and Pat Amdor, Illinois. Most of us were back to the hotel before 3:00 for some R and R before our evening banquet. Following the meal, we again took the 20 minute break and came back for an early bird door prize which was another envelope with $ This time Bob Kramer was the lucky recipient. The Region 9 Director, Audrey Ledgerwood, moderated the meeting. Merry Vandervalk, our IFF Representative, gave a history of the Canadian National Anthem.
