Director - Scott Jones Well another month gone and it was a busy one. Last month four of us went to Harley Officer Training (HOT) - we took a lot in over the few days we were in Reno NV - our classes started at 8 am went until 5pm with a few breaks in between classes. We learned about rider safety, finance, how to work with interesting people (I told them that's all we have!! LOL) We also had a classes on kick ass events so I would love to make our Vet Run bigger than ever this year...so please come out and help. Well you must have heard I am back in the saddle and having a great time - I just started riding again a few weeks ago. We went to Joshua Tree with some of the Chapter members and had a great time, it was just a little windy going up on Hwy 62 - you definitely had to hold on tight. Then we went though the park and on to Chiraco Summit where everyone had lunch before heading back. It was an awesome day for the first time after months of dreary weather...woohoo! The Open House went from cold and rainy the day before to snow and ice on the poker route so we had to cancel the route. John Boyce came up with the idea of a "Poker Walk" and we sold over a 100 hands at $5 dollars each - awesome idea John! Tamara sold 50/50 for a $320 prize! Thanks to all that came out to help. Our Chapter kicks butt!! After the meeting on Sunday about bikes went on a Big Bear ride - if you haven't been up the hill in awhile you should see the lake! It is so full it is almost the top of the dam. We all went to lunch in Crestline at the Loose Caboose, they are under new ownership and have great food. I sure hope more of you can come out for some of the rides - we are having a blast!! See you all soon...remember ride safe and always have fun. Scott F R E E D O M F L Y E R 2

Asst. Director - Rodger McEwan From the Pen of your Assistant Director Not much to write about this month. Just a reminder to keep you updated on the "Southern Utah ". Although the flyer says "no rooms are blocked" rooms have been blocked at three hotels. In Escalante at the Prospector Inn the room reservations are under Rodger McEwan. In Tuba City at the Quality Inn the room block is under LLHOG and in Kingman at the Super 8 the reservations are under LLHOG. If you are going to go on this ride, book your rooms early, they won't last, this is truly a fantastic ride one you will remember and talk about for a long time. And just another reminder to hydrate yourself the one or two days before a long ride in deg. heat, eight to ten 8 oz. glasses of water per day. Coffee and Soda drinks are not hydrating fluids, in fact they dehydrate you. DRINK WATER OR GATORADE. Safe...and I'll see you on the road Rodger McEwan NEW H.O.G. 4 Ladies of Harley-Tamra Boyce National Women s Day, on May 14, 2011, women from across the globe will come together to celebrate women riders. This year, we invite women in the largest cities and smallest towns, in every country to get out and ride. Head out solo, organize something with your friends, or check out what s happening at your local Harley- Davidson dealer. It doesn t matter how far. It doesn t matter where. Together Let s. Loma Linda Quaid s will be hosting their 2 nd Annual Ladies Only Garage Party on Friday June 3 rd, so keep an eye out for your invitation. This is one event you won t want to miss. Don t miss out on our next LOH meeting, Saturday May 21st, 9am at the Family Restaurant in Loma Linda. We have lots to talk about and will be hosting a ride to Seven Oaks afterwards. (KSU 10:30 AM) We still need volunteer s for the Chapter picnic and 2012 Transition Dinner please let me know if you are interested in helping out LOH of the Month Linda Swearington My husband and I ride an Ultra Classic David, being somewhat directionally challenged, calls me his Nagy-gator. Besides riding I like to spend time cooking, oil painting, and reading. A few of my past work experiences includes: working in construction offices, cooking in the Fullerton school district kitchen, Catering (Executive chief position), Medical billing clerk for 14 yrs., and past restaurant owner. My favorite place of employment, by far, had to be when I was working at Anaheim Lake - it was pure fun! Nothing better than to get to fish and work at the same time... David and I attended high school together and have been married for 43 yrs., this past January. I am somewhat of a local girl growing up in Orange County, so this nut hasn t fallen far from the tree. The farthest I have lived from where I was born is our current residence in Hesperia. We have one daughter, living in Florida, a grandson and grand daughter living in Orange County, and became great grand parents last May. We joined the LL Hog Chapter this year and I am currently the Blood Drive Officer. Since I have been donating blood for several years now and the position needed filling, it just seemed like a natural position to fall into. 5 Treasurer - Randy Kim Treasurer-Randy Kim Treasure s Chest.. Well chapter members another Pre Laughlin Open House has come and gone. I d like to thank all of the Chapter Members that came out to help with the Open House. We certainly couldn t have done it without your help. Very big thanks go out to the LOMA LINDA HOG OF- FICERS for their hard work planning this event. We were able to raise another $ for the chapter s bank and helped Quaid s Harley Davidson donate $ to the Ronald McDonald/Loma Linda Children s Hospital. Now for our next project, we are already in the planning stages for our Annual Veterans/Open House in Oct 2011.We need all the help from you the chapter members to make this our biggest event yet. Any ideas or suggestions will surely be grateful. The Officers will keep you informed of the exciting events your Chapter has planned for the next few months, so please attend and help spread the word about this great riding Chapter of yours. In case you haven t heard? Our Chapter is now the largest in the Inland Empire. We welcomed 5 new members at our Open House and hopefully we will continue to grow. Already our Chapter rides have increased. At our last ride to Big Bear we had 18 bikes. Way to go LLHOG. I m working with our Officers to come up with fresh ideas as to what we can do to raise more funds for the Chapter so that we can pass along to our Chapter members the benefits of these future projects. Well until our next Chapter meeting, ride safe and come out and ride with your fellow Chapter members every chance you can. Let s make the summer of 2011 a great riding summer..randy Kim 5

Activities-John Boyce May brings special honor to our men and women who have served their country admirably. To those past and present a sincere Thank-You for what you have done to preserve the freedoms that we so cherish. Take a moment of your time to express your gratitude when you run across a vet of any era it could be a parent, a husband, wife or even one of our own children..take time and acknowledge all that they have sacrificed. are interested in helping out.. just let me know and we can work out the details. Finally.. if you have a ride suggestion.. please let us know. Shoot me an with your ideas and we will do our best to accommodate. All rides are chosen by the membership!! Be safe this month on the road and again, remember those that protect our freedoms to do what we want. As a Chapter, we have many who have served, and now our children are following in those same steps. This is something we all can take pride in. This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to our Chapter members and their families who have served. Please take a moment to enjoy some of the special photographs that have been included in this issue of those members and their families. As for Activities, we have something every weekend of the month. But more importantly, each one of our rides has begun to increase in size. We once were averaging 10 riders, now it has almost doubled. The rides are becoming more interesting and we are trying our best to accommodate all of the members interests ( a task in itself). Dr. John It has become necessary to recruit Assistant Road Captains to help with the rides and assure everyone s safety as we head on out on the road. If you F R E E D O M F L Y E R 6

Safety Officer-Paul Daak Sometimes it seems like Southern California has two seasons "summer s coming" and "summer s here". Even though we just experienced a cold wet spell, it looks like summer s here. We all know how hot it gets here during the summer months and it is important to keep that in mind when preparing for a ride. You could be riding in warm to hot temperatures but, because of the wind, not be wet with perspiration. You may feel perfectly fine. However, your body is always secreting moisture. When your body secretes moisture evaporation causes cooling which helps regulate body temperature. That cooling helps you feel normal, but you are still losing the fluid that you need. drink. If you re nice to your pals on baggers they might be willing to carry your water for you. Some of us may need to supplement our water intake with salt. During times of heavy perspiration drinking only water may lead to low salt concentration, which in turn, jeopardizes brain function. You should consult your doctor about your individual need for salt supplementation. Many sports drinks contain the important minerals that we lose during perspiration. You may choose to drink them instead of plain water. Do not drink beer or other alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages do not replenish the lost fluid and they impair your ability to operate your motorcycle. Coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks may also lead to dehydration. red or flushed dry skin, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, strange behavior, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizure. Heat stroke can be fatal. Victims of heat stroke must receive immediate medical treatment. Call 911 and cool the victim. Move the victim to a shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or tepid water to the skin, fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, place ice packs under the arms and in the groin area. Monitor body temperature with a thermometer and continue cooling until body temperature is below 102 degrees. (Did you remember to call 911?) Even if you re not riding in a chapter event, it s best not to ride alone in hot weather. Remember the buddy system. It may save your life. In the warmer temperatures we all perspire more and we need to replenish the lost fluid with water. Start by drinking water long before you begin your ride. You should also take water with you if you have a place to carry it. Water is the most important thing you can take with you when riding in the hot sunny days. You can freeze water bottles ahead of time and they will stay cold longer. You may even consider taking a hydration pack. If water storage is a problem, you should stop often and get some water to Wear light colored clothing to reflect the hot infrared sunrays. You can wear a bandana soaked in water around your neck. You might get that cool biker look wearing leather, but fabric that permits ventilation is best in hot weather. Protect exposed skin from UV rays with a good sun block. Stop often and take a break in the shade. Keep an eye on your buddies and watch for signs of heat stroke: high body temperature, the absence of sweating with hot 7 Let s ride, have fun, and be safe.

LL HOG Group Riding... Since our Chapter continues to increase with Newer Members, I thought it would be appropriate to take a moment to explain how our group rides function. Our rides typically depart either from our Dealership, Quaid s Loma Linda or Goody s Café at 551 Hunts Lane Colton, just a few blocks down from the dealership. You would need to check either the Chapter Newsletter or our web page under the calendar section to determine what the starting point is for that specific ride. KSU Kick Stands Up.. this refers to the time that we will be leaving the departure point. i.e. if we say 9:30 AM and you arrive at the departure point at 9:45 AM, we more than likely will be gone.. so try to show up prior to the departure time or KSU time. Always show up with a full tank of fuel. At the dealership we will traditionally try to gather up at the area right before our General Meeting area. Prior to departing a short briefing is held to discuss several issues. Signup sheet for the Chapter Butt Miles. Signing of Chapter Release Form: If you or your passenger are not a paid Chapter Member you are required to sign a Chapter Event Release Form. (Chapter members sign an annual release form when they renew each year so you do not need to sign each time.) Directions to our destination: One of the Road Captains will provide information about the route being taken to the destination. Hand signals will be discussed We will ask if there are any less experienced riders and if so, you will be assigned a partner to help you on your ride. We will also ask if there are any special needs we need to be aware of. Once we start to form up, Assistant Road Captains will be strategically placed within the group. Typically one or two in the center as well as one or two in the back. The folks in the back referred to as the Sweep communicate with the Road Captain about what is happening within the group. Once on the road, the assistants are there for you.. if anything needs to be attended to, they will stay by your side until the issue is resolved.you will never be left alone on the side of the road. The Chapter and Harley have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol. If you decide to drink prior to the ride, you will be asked to remove yourself from the group. Alcohol at the destination again is frowned upon and you will be asked not to ride in group formation. This is all about safety and responsibility. Our philosophy is to make the ride an experience that you will not soon forget, a safe ride, great views and most importantly an opportunity for you to socialize with your fellow chapter members. When we reach our destination, typically the ride is considered completed, but again we will always stay with you to get you home safely. I hope this helps a bit.. if you have any other questions.. feel free to discuss them with any of the officers on the ride or with the Road Captain of that specific ride. 16
