1 from the driver s seat Jan 8, 2013 Our Holiday Party was a complete success. The weather stayed warm enough for the mist and rain to remain mist and rain. All of us will remember many a holiday party accompanied by snow. We had 68 members and guests enjoy the warmth and holiday spirit of the Marlborough Country Club. We all calculate that we have been having this particular event at the Marlborough CC for at least 15 years. The food was outstanding so we used our dancing to work off some of our dinner and "make your own sundae" dessert. Our DJ quizzed us on trivia questions and lottery scratch cards were given for the correct answer. Special thank you go out to: Yvonne Pepe for making and donating the crocheted center pieces (these were given at each table to those members having the longest tenure with our club): Doug and Nan Linden for coming early and helping set up the room: Sue Champagne for printing the name cards for the 68 members and guests: Len and Peg Michalak for arriving early to deliver the name cards: Ed and Joyce Croci for once again collecting and delivering the Toys for Tots gifts to the U.S. Marine Corps. Last but not least a thank you to Tony Zeoli for taking all of the photographs we will be able to enjoy. 9 Sally S Steering ColumnS By Sally Legge I know some of you will not understand these terms, but I bet you know someone who might. 'FENDER SKIRTS' A term I haven't heard in a long time, and thinking about 'fender skirts' started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice like 'curb feelers' And 'steering knobs.' (AKA) 'suicide knob,' 'neckers knobs.' Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some older person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember 'Continental kits?' They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them 'emergency brakes? At some point 'parking brake' became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with 'emergency brake.' I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the 'foot feed.' Many today do not even know what a clutch is or that the dimmer switch used to be on the floor. For that matter, the starter was down there too. Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the 'running board' up to the house? Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - 'store-bought.' Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a storebought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. 'Coast to coast' is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term 'worldwide' for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, 'wall-towall' was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When was the last time you heard the quaint phrase 'in a family way?' It's hard to imagine that the word 'pregnant' was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company, so we had all that talk about stork visits and being in a family way' or simply 'expecting.' Apparently 'brassiere' is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just 'bra' now. ' Unmentionables' probably wouldn't be understood at all. 9
10 The Oil Leak Morning Brew submitted by Doug Linden Machinist's Workshop Mag (tm) recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. the magazine reports they tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. *Penetrating oil... Average load* None pounds WD pounds PB Blaster pounds Liquid Wrench pounds Kano Kroil pounds ATF-Acetone mix...53 pounds Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. 10
