3 Dear Friends, I am very lucky that this year I am able to take a Sabbatical and very grateful to those for whom it means extra work. I will be out of action for June, July and August, and I thought that I would take this opportunity to tell you about what I intend to do for the first half of the time away, and invite you to sponsor me, if you so wish. Starting at the beginning of June I intend to walk from Hendaye (near the French/ Spanish border on the Atlantic coast) to Banyuls-sur-Mer (near the French/ Spanish border on the Mediterranean coast). I will follow a long-distance route known as the GR10 or Sentier des Pyrénées. It makes a way through the Pyrenean Mountains, mainly on the French side. It is approximately 900km (550 miles) long, and if all goes to plan should take me about 50 days. Throughout the route a number of variations are possible and unpredictable weather means that a certain flexibility is required. I intend to carry a tent and sometimes I will camp in campsites (the route deliberately seeks out mountain villages), sometimes in bunkhouses or mountain refuges and sometimes I will camp wild. I will be able to buy food most days, but a few times I will have to carry food for several days. As well as being a long way, there are also a lot of ups and downs - something like 49,000m (160,000 ft) of ascent and descent, which is equivalent to more than 5 ascents of Everest from sea level, although not quite as dangerous I hope. I intend to keep a diary, which, with my mobile phone (with solar charger), I can publish on the internet. Anyone who wants to can follow my progress at Any sponsorship that I make will go towards the work and upkeep of the churches I serve. To give some money to Hawkshead Church, please send it to Frances Stride at Minstrels Gallery, The Square, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0NZ. Cheques should be payable to Hawkshead PCC. For Sawrey Church, please send money to Garry Schofield at Beechmount, Near Sawrey, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0JZ. Cheques should be made payable to Sawrey PCC. At there is a link to a form you can print off, which will enable you to add Gift Aid to your donation. There are also instructions here for giving money to Satterthwaite or Rusland Churches. Wish me luck! John Items for the July/August and September editions of the Link should be sent to Kathleen Farnworth at kmf131@gmail.com. Any church enquires in June, July or August should be directed to Nick Hallam or a relevant Church Warden.

8 School News Key Stage 1 pupils visited Keen Ground Farm to see the new lambs which they all held and fed. They have redesigned their role play corner embracing a pirate theme to inspire many a pirate story! Key Stage 2 have produced some amazing Japanese art works and have been learning about food chains, photographing habitats and producing sewing along this theme. Years 3 and 4 have been practising Tudor dances. Years 5 and 6 made 'alien soup' in science to discover facts about solids/liquids/gases. Mike Thornley held an assembly about bats, bat boxes and biodiversity. Forest school involved planting herbs and flowers, along with building a wormery. Hawkshead School are thrilled to have achieved Silver Level for the 'Learning Outside the Classroom Kite Mark'. Windermere Reflections have been working with children to develop knowledge about problems caused by fertilisers, general living and erosion. They also learned about the Arctic Char, its life cycle and how blue green algae affects continuation of the fish. May Queen The Sawrey and Cunsey May Queen was a very happy day for all who attended. A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to the event, it could not run without your helping hands. Thank you indeed!
