2 Dear Friends, I regularly write a piece here and other things elsewhere on behalf of the Church. But I wonder what we actually mean by the Church? In order to answer that question perhaps we might do well to look at how Jesus used the word. There is a major turning point in the story of Jesus. This is when Peter states his belief that Jesus is the Messiah, the chosen one of God. Jesus then tells Peter that on this rock he will build the churchthat very word, church. The Gospels were written in Greek and the word that is translated as church ekklesia. The word is nothing to do with a building; it actually originally meant a gathering of the people. One of the contexts in which the word was used was when a crowd gathered in the market place or a square to hear an important message. So, the word we translate as church would have been very familiar to the first readers of the Gospel. Not a building (although we are blessed with some very fine ones), not an institution, but people sharing good news. The ekklesia was and is the gathered people; a gathering of people, called by the herald who was the man of Galilee and of Golgotha and the Easter dawn. More details from Elizabeth Riggs Hawkshead Esthwaite Primary School Rose Queen Gala Saturday, 14th June The celebrations will begin at 2.00 p.m. in the School playground when Pupils, Parents, Staff and Visitors will process to the Square where there will be dancing around the Maypole. Later, all will return to school and the stalls will be opened, along with a Café, run by The Governors, serving Cream Teas. A great day will be had by all! Come for a Walk on Monday 16 th June The Benefice Walking Group will meet at a.m. at the small car park at the junction of roads to the west of the Thirlmere dam (north end of the lake). Drive along Thirlmere towards Keswick, pass the turn off to St John s in the Vale, take the next left, cross the dam, and you will come to the car-park, which is now pay and display. The walk of about five miles will include a visit to St John s in the Vale Church. Bring a picnic lunch. All welcome. More details from John Dixon THE HAWKSHEAD SURGERY Apologies that the message in the April Link, concerning remote membership of the Patient Participation Group for the Hawkshead Medical Practice, had a typo in the address. The Patient Participation Group is a group of registered patients who work with the surgery to improve services. At the moment the main focus is on keeping a campaign going to ensure the Surgery's future services are what the community needs. You can be a remote member of the group, which will entail receiving a summary of the PPG minutes and commenting if you have anything to add, but there is no obligation for anything more. 7 A big thank you to all who sent cards, flowers, cheese and chutney, good wishes, offers of assistance and have generally pitched in to help, as well as praying for my recovery from recent cancer surgery. Both Patsy and I have been completely overwhelmed by the support we have received. Mike Derry SCHOOL NEWS After a beautiful sunshine filled Easter break Hawkshead pupils return to study new topics. This term Key Stage 1 are learning about Sound & Light, Seaside - past and present, Years 3/4 will be looking at Local Study and Life Cycles, Years 5/6 are studying Mountains & Rivers of the world, and Life Cycles. Key Stage 1 have been using various media to create some beautiful seaside art. Years 3 & 4 enjoyed a visit to Tesco at Millom. They learnt about where food comes from and completed questionnaires about price and weight of food. They also went in the big fridge and freezer, bbrrrr. Another trip includes a visit to the Pattersons farm at Ickenthwaite to see their goslings, fell ponies and Herd of Galloway cattle. Katherine gave an interesting talk about how their cattle are involved in conservation grazing for the benefit of the endangered High Brown Fritillary Butterfly and its habitat. Key Stage 2 have embraced artwork in Fletcher's Field, the concept being 'pattern and design'. They have also been identifying spring flowers in forest school. With the help of a teacher from Kendal Brewery Arts, pupils are creating a dance piece for the production Fantasia. Year 6 have been planting in the vegetable garden and Years 3 & 4 are taking guitar lessons. Years 5 & 6 are learning about architecture and designing their own interesting versions of a building to house a Pre-School facility. The children have all participated in orienteering. Rose Queen Gala will be held in Hawkshead on Saturday, 14th June, we look forward to the event which plays such a valuable role in supporting our school and hope to see you there see the details on page 5

8 HAWKSHEAD RECREATION GROUND TRUST The Annual General Meeting of the Trust will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 8th July 2014, in the Lower Market Hall, Hawkshead. All are welcome to attend. Secretary, LOVE YOUR FOREST is a new project, launched by the Forestry Commission, and Grizedale Forest is looking for volunteers to make a difference through various roles. Since 1977, leading international artists have created sculpture in response to Grizedale s unique environment. Now, around forty artworks are located across the forest, linked by a network of walking and cycling trails. The Forestry Commission is now seeking forest art works volunteers to work with its arts development team. The Forestry Commission is also recruiting volunteers to take on roles that include: taking visitors on guided walks, to helping on family events, to meeting and greeting visitors and gathering feedback. Volunteers will receive training and have the opportunity to learn new skills. It is also a great opportunity for people who want to pursue a career in the arts industry, customer care, visitor experience or education. The Neighbours are just everyday people who want to offer some time to help in their local community. Hospice Neighbours have been visiting people who are living with life-shortening illnesses since last November and up to now have supported nine with a range of illnesses and needs. Most of the support has been companionship, but, as the relationship and trust have developed, Neighbours have been doing a variety of tasks - taking clients to local appointments, out shopping or out for a treat. The service can be of help, not just to individuals but, to those doing the caring. Neighbours is a confidential service managed by St Mary s Hospice.
