3 Dear Friends, I remember years ago a train journey across London. It was hot and the train was crowded. I was standing up. The woman standing next to me had perfected the London art of standing in the middle of a train and reading a book, which was completely engrossing her. Eventually I caught a glimpse of what it was, and remember being quite surprised to discover that she was reading the Bible. Then the man standing next to me pulled out a book too, and began to read it. It was the Bible as well. Looking round, I noticed that about half the people in the carriage were reading Bibles. I ought to have been thrilled, but in fact I felt curiously uneasy, stuck on a train, surrounded by people reading the Bible. With a certain amount of horror I find myself admitting a prejudice. I feared that the religion of these Bible-readers would be of an extreme nature, fundamentalist and intolerant. I don t know whether I was right, but what they were doing was just not the done thing. It is fascinating to think that in the days of the Reformation, the equivalent sight would not have been at all surprising. People learned to read because of the Bible. That was what reading was for. They felt sure that the Bible had the words of life. That was all that was needed. But now I think people, even church-going people, are not so sure. But I find that if I approach the Bible (some bits more than others) with an open mind and heart, not necessarily looking at the literal meaning, but listening to what it has to say for me today, the dry words can often take on flesh and live. The Word becomes flesh. John Any comments, articles or queries for the Link should be ed to esthwaitelink@gmx.com or given to Kathleen Farnworth or John Dixon The deadline for inclusion in the June edition is Sunday, 11th May. 6 SUPPORT FOR CHRISTIAN AID LENT LUNCHES Many thanks to everyone who supported the Lent lunches which raised , including Gift Aid for Hawkshead including Gift Aid for Sawrey Making a grand total for the charity of My sincere thanks go to the ladies who hosted the lunches, many of whom have offered lunch for most of the fifteen years of the event; their warm welcome and hospitality, not to mention the range of soups offered, have made a pleasant social interlude during the five weeks of Lent, strengthening friendship in the benefice. Carol Robson. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK: 11 th to 17 th MAY 2014 War tears lives apart: Love can help piece them back together For some 42 million people across the world, the horror of war is a part of daily life. Right now, fuelled by the devastating violence in Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the numbers of people driven from their homes by war is on the rise. Could you provide the gift of hope? 15 could provide blankets for refugee children to protect them from bitter night-time temperatures. 40 could provide enough good quality and nutritious food for two refugee children for a month. 150 could help us provide specialist emotional support for a child deeply traumatised by the horror of war that they ve witnessed or experienced. With this copy of The Link, you will find a Christian Aid envelope. During Christian Aid week someone will call at your house and, if you would like to make a contribution (better still, if you are able, Gift Aid it), please put it in this envelope for our collector. Should we fail to collect, please leave your envelope at church (in the vestry letterbox if no-one is there). Christian Aid is not a missionary organisation. Working with local partners at grassroots level it seeks to give practical expression to Christian teaching by helping some of the poorest communities across the world. Be an instrument of God s peace. Give, act and pray this Christian Aid Week.
7 HAWKSHEAD RECTREATION GROUND Party in the Park This year s fund raising event will take place on Sunday, 10 th August, from noon until 6.00 p.m. Building on the success of our previous Parties in the Park and our legendary Hawkshead Christmas Party, this event will be yet another fun and very busy day with plenty of stalls, live music and other entertainment, as well as a beer tent and refreshments for all the family. Initial enquiries regarding stalls, both commercial and for fund raising, can be directed to Petra Heide petra heide@ hotmail.com. We are also looking for help on the day with carparking, bucket shaking, etc. Please contact: Dougie Bell - dougiebell01@gmail.com Tel: or
8 Mike and Claire Tomes thank everybody who has helped them over the last few months while their son, Arran, has been ill. Arran has been responding well to treatment and, luckily, has spent a lot of time at home. He is going in for his last high dose of chemo and a stem cell transplant over the Easter holidays and, hopefully, coming home some six to eight weeks later to make a full recovery. We can't thank everyone enough for their kindness and for making us feel part of the local community. The family of Jessie Tomlins, who died at her home in Red Lion Yard, Hawkshead, on Feb 22 nd 2014, thank everyone who offered their help and sympathy, especially the doctors and district nursing team. Jessie, who died two days before her 88 th birthday, commented recently The healthcare I have received here has been unbelievable compared to what I d have got back in my large home town. It would be impossible to find a village with more kind and thoughtful people. The eight years Jessie spent in Hawkshead were amongst the happiest in her long life. Those wishing to send flowers were asked by the family to forward a contribution, instead, to The Hawkshead Surgery In memory of Jessie Tomlins. Hawkshead Pre-School Opening Hours Hawkshead Pre-School provides a fun, stimulating environment for children aged 2-4 years. The Pre-School is currently open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9.00 a.m p.m. In conjunction with Hawkshead Primary School we can also offer an After Pre-School Childcare Facility, which means that, for a fee, your child can be in Pre-School until 4.15p.m. or 5.15p.m. If you would like more information please don t hesitate to contact Pre-School hawksheadpreschool@hotmail.co.uk We would also love to hear from you if you would be interested in using Pre-School on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Would there be any interest in forming a writers group locally? I would envisage meeting monthly, with people bringing short pieces of their own to read (or not as the mood took them) and some time for shared activities. The aim would be to create a supportive group, not a fiercely critical environment! I went on a poetry workshop recently and found being with others trying to write was creatively stimulating. If you think this is an interesting idea, me on rap.milling@btinternet.com, or phone Rachael Milling
9 National Trust update All of our sites are now open and so far, the tourist season is looking quite positive for the Lakes. In Hawkshead, it does seem as if the changes in the car park are having a positive effect for visitors to the village and Gallery. The pressure of a time on a ticket seems to be easing a bit, with visitors more relaxed and happy to stay in the village which is great. Hill Top has also had an OK start to season I m writing just as the Easter holidays start so it will be interesting to see how busy the Lakes is at this time. The closure of the ferry for a month from 28 April is going to make things more difficult for everyone, but we ll be looking to encourage more people to come by foot. At Wray Castle, we are continuing work on developing the place as a visitor attraction and working hard to manage the traffic issues, the number one challenge for us here. Working with the Claife Parish Plan group, we ll be looking to trial some AA signage from early May for the rest of the season to look to steer visitors moving between our places in certain ways, particularly avoiding High Wray. The campsite is also gearing up for a (hopefully) warm and sunny and thus busy Easter. The new jetty at Bark Barn is installed and hopefully the boat service will be operating soon to and from it. At Tarn Hows, we now have two trampers off road mobility vehicles, which are great to help those who can t get around as much. They are life- changing in allowing people to get around the Tarn, free of use and bookable on As always, if you would like to know more, please do get in touch. John Moffat, General Manager, , southlakes@nationaltrust.org.uk Claife Parishioners are invited to attend the Annual Parish Meeting at Braithwaite Hall, Far Sawrey, on Tuesday 20 th May 2014 at 7.00 p.m. Come and hear the latest developments and progress to date with your Community Led Plan. Have your say and make your contribution to its ultimate objectives. V Mark Phillips Clerk, Claife Parish Council MARKET HALL TRUST The Annual General Meeting of the Hawkshead Market Hall Trust will take place at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 13 th May. All welcome.
