3 Dear Friends, We talk a lot about faith in church. It is a good thing. But what about doubt? Is that the opposite of faith and, therefore, a bad thing. I don t think so. Faith can move mountains but doubt has also achieved a lot over the years. Doubt in the status quo, whatever it was at the time, has liberated people throughout history. It has given us the Reformation and our democratic institutions. Doubt has also stimulated inventions and scientific advance. For instance, in the 16th Century the study of anatomy was forbidden by the Church. Doubts about this ruling and about the medical orthodoxy of the time led physicians to experiment secretly. This resulted in huge advances in medicine. Some people may feel lost in a desert of doubt when it comes to their religious faith. They may be simply unable to believe what they feel is required or unable to reconcile their beliefs with the harsher realities of life. Personal problems, illness, wars and natural disasters can make us question our faith in God. I believe that we wouldn t be human if they didn t. Sometimes we may worry about this. We may even feel guilty about it. We shouldn t. Honest doubt shows we re concerned and worried about ourselves, others, our relationship with God and the state of the world. It s part of being human. In the Christian tradition, the most famous doubter is St Thomas, who initially didn t believe that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead. But perhaps what is most striking about Thomas is not his doubt, but his honesty. He refused to pretend to believe in something he didn t, he refused just to go along with the crowd. But in the end he recognised the risen Christ, and exclaimed, My Lord and my God. It is evidence that doubt can work quite well with faith. I invite you to come and worship with us in one of our churches. Don t worry about doubtsbelieve me, you ll not be alone. Just come as yourself- your less than perfect, chip on the shoulder, always feel a bit left out of it, wish I was better than I am but unfortunately I am not, self. Because it is that person that God loves, that self that God longs to welcome, heal and bring to fullness and newness of life. John Entertainment Evenings Two short Plays (both comedies) and a light supper. This is not to be missed. 8 School News The children (and staff!) return to school refreshed for the summer term after the Easter holidays. There have been many activities to both acknowledge and celebrate the Royal Wedding including plate decorating and flag making. All children have received a mug, kindly provided by the PTA, to mark the event. Years 1-4 have enjoyed a trip to Grizedale as part of a new Arts Project. It involves design work with a view to creating another sculpture to be seen by all who are on the trail. The school choir have entered a competition on the radio with the English Country Garden song. Key Stage 1 have been planting herbs and sunflower seeds and Key Stage 2 embark on the planning stages of organising a whole school walk. National Trust update, June 2011 It is a really busy time for us at the moment, with lots of exciting things happening. There is too much to cover in just this short article, so keep your eyes open for more information about some of the following Firstly, Hill Top and the Beatrix Potter Gallery move to their summer season opening times later this month. A mixed start to the season for us and we re watching closely how it will develop. Wray Castle While the tenancy moves forward slowly, we will be opening again for the summer season on Saturday 28 th May, daily until 10 th September. This will run in a very similar way as for previous summer openings mainly the ground floor and gardens (the grounds remaining open access) and really pushing people to come across by boat wherever possible. Claife station & courtyard will be opening also on 28 th May, following our purchase of the site from the FBA at Ferry House and a lot of work we have done over the last few months. For the first time for decades, the viewing station and cottage courtyard are now reunited and we are using this year to find out what people would like to see happen there. There are around 65,000 people pass it on foot now what works for them? What would local people like to see, bearing in mind that the whole site is all about the view? How do we move it forward in the future? Ferry House toilets I hope that these will also be re-opening on the 28 th run by The National Trust with the support of others (this is dependent on finalising a suitable agreement with the National Park!). As always, questions or requests for more information, please contact us at the Coniston office on 41456, southlakes@nationaltrust.org.uk 7
9 Rusland and Satterthwaite News Rusland & District W.I. gathering in Rusland Reading Room for their April meeting. A letter had been received from H.R.H. Prince William's Office extending warmest appreciation from the Prince and Miss Catherine Middleton for the unique greetings card sent to them expressing good wishes for their wedding. Mrs. Margaret Dryden who had painted a view of Little Langdale Tarn for the card was thanked and her painting was exhibited for members to admire. Copies of both items will be available to members at a nominal cost. Sadly, the President made known her intention of resigning for personal reasons. The speakers were John Baldwin and Tony Suart, Wildlife Crime officers with Cumbria Police. They gave a humorous and sometimes gruesome account of many aspects of their job, answered lots of questions and endeared themselves to their audience. They were sincerely thanked for coming. Jennifer Stoker The Esthwaite Link Online It is now possible to see the current edition of the Link, as well as previous editions, on the church website: Any comments, articles or queries for the Link should be mailed to jjcedixon@btinternet.com or given to John Dixon or Kathleen Farnworth. The deadline for inclusion in the July/August edition is Sunday 12th June. Items should be no longer than 300 words. This is a church magazine for the whole community. The church councils of Hawkshead and Sawrey are committed to providing this magazine free of charge to every household in the parish as part of their mission and outreach. 8
