OKANOGAN VALLEY CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Volume 24 Issue 3 March Officers President: Dave Swanberg Vice President: FROM THE PRESIDENT S CHAIR Gail Sunde Director: Tryg Culp Alt Director: Frank Oborne Secretary: Sandra Walters Treasurer: Linda Parker Trail Boss: Tom Windsor Volunteer Hours: Peggy Swanberg Newsletter Editor: Heidi Cornell Historian: Teresa Naylor For newsletter submissions, or adrtising, contact Heidi Cornell February is nearly gone and the March mud is already here. I hate to wish my life away, but I am anxious for the warmer weather so I can listen to Peggy complain about the heat. Its been a busy winter season though. As I look back through my diary, I can see where much of my time has gone. There have been many, many meetings, all in preparation for the upcoming spring and summer events. Its going to be a good year and I hope you will be able to take advantage of the opportunities to participate not only in our events, but those of our neighboring chapters and BCHWS. One highlight of the February activities was the Sweetheart Auction and Potluck. We had a large turnout, the food was good and plenty and the desserts, outstanding. I want to thank all of you who furnished the potluck dishes, brought the desserts and especially to those who purchased the desserts. You made this auction a success. Moving on, the next major function on the horizon is the BCHW Annual Meeting and Fundraiser. As cochair of this event, a lot of my time has been taken up with coordinating the upcoming event with the other various committees. Several of our members have made personal donations for the associated auctions and you have my appreciation and my thanks. This is an important fundraiser for BCHW and it is also fun. Please plan on attending and if you can, give a helping hand where you can. Moving on to April, our annual Tack and Horse Auction, on Sat. the 19 th. We still need help and we still have some open positions to fill. If you have not already volunteered but can help out, please call either Tom Windsor or Dave Sunde. You will find their phone number or in the Yearbook. If any of you want to shed a couple of pounds because of the dessert auction, the first trail clearing will happen March 25 th. Dave 1

CALENDER The Social Corner On our normal 3rd Wednesday of the month, We had our annual Sweetheart Dessert Auction. This year we also had 2 BCHW jackets to be auctioned off. About 30 people attended and lots of wonderful desserts were to be had. The bidding became fierce and I was saving my money for the jackets. Over $ dollars was raised for the chapter. We had 9 people come to the dinner at Tonasket Pizza. They had a variety of salads, sandwiches and pizza. We all had good conversation. After the dinner, 6 of us went to the Eagles for a Beach Party Dance. 3 TRAIL BOSS REPORT YOUR AD COULD BE HERE There are two activities scheduled for March. The first one is a trail clearing work party on Department of Fish and Wildlife land located in the Sinlahekin Valley. Volunteers should meet at the Fish Lake camp site located at the south end of Fish Lake at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday 25 March. Depending on the number of volunteers available, we may do some additional work on the trail from the Sinlahekin Wildlife Headquarters south to Fish Lake in addition to the trail from Fish Lake south toward the Scotch Creek Trailhead. We will be able to use ATV s again this year to transport people and equipment along the trail to be cleared. This is March and the weather can be warm or cool and damp, so be sure to dress appropriately. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. We will need chainsaws, loppers, pole saw s and power pruners plus people to throw cut limbs and brush from the trail right of way. For directions to Fish Lake see the 2008 OVC BCHW Yearbook. The first trail ride of the year will go from the Fish Lake Trailhead (see above) south toward the Scotch Creek Trailhead. Bring a lunch and meet at Fish Lake at the standard time for the ride to commence at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday 30 March. The trail is level 1 with a couple short sections of rocky trail surface with the remainder of the trail being hard packed dirt along an old abandoned wagon road. I would expect this ride to last about 4 hours with a short stop for lunch at the old homestead located midway between the Fish Lake Trailhead and the Scotch Creek Trailhead. ALL-SEW has our BCH logo and will apply to any type of clothing you would like. 3

PACKING/CAMPING CLINC Feb. 16 This was listed in the Yearbook as a packing/camping clinic, but that was not correct, it was just a packing clinic. But nobody minded because the packing part of the clinic was about as good as it could get. Somebody said 17 folks attended, but with a head count recall, we can only come up with 15 attendees. No matter, the day was good and having in at the Cultural Center was a good idea. We were warm and dry and the coffee pot was on. Tom Windsor, Tryg Culp and Bob Crowell demonstrated their packing skills and everybody had an opportunity to tie knots, mantee a pack or anything else they felt they needed some guidance on. Bob Crowell gave a demo using our new lumber bunks. Who ever would have thought you could pack a 12 foot plank on a mule. Thanks to the instructors and thanks to the attendees. Its no fun to put on a clinic if nobody bothers to come. TACK CLEANING AND PIZZA Feb. 2 Not many people were thinking about tack cleaning because only 4 members turned out. But those four us will be looking pretty sharp on the first ride on the year. Will you? Of course there was the pizza reward after the tack was all cleaned, but we were an unpredictable bunch and we decided to live in the fast lane and opted for Subway sandwiches instead. Tack cleaning is never a whole bunch of fun, but sharing the day with good friends makes it seem less like a chore. Thanks to Linda Oborne, Sandra Walters and Dave and Peggy Swanberg for participating. Note from a Member I wanted to thank the OKBCHW for all the activities they put on. I know that many of you are like me and are either working or very busy with lots of activities and can not always attend all of the functions that are provided. I for one, appreciate the variety of activities and enjoy picking out which ones I will be able to attend and visit with my fellow Back Country Horseman members without feeling guilty or having someone think less of me because I can t attend all the functions available. We are very lucky and I for one wanted to say THANK YOU ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS and EVERYBODY ELSE We have so many new members I thought it would be good to explain how to get logo clothing. And some of you others have CRS (can't remember stuff) so this is a reminder to you too. Katherine Moore, ALL-SEW Embroidery has our logo on file and she will put it on new clothing, or any of your existing clothing as long as it is quality enough to withstand the embroidery process. New clothing items can also be selected through her catalog. Our Chapter does not have any designated style or color so you are free to choose whatever suits your needs, be it shirt, vest, jacket or anything else. And you can choose the colors of the logo so if you want to be creative, feel free to do so. She can sew your volunteer patches onto your logo wear too. Katherine is at her shop in Tonasket in the afternoons so it is best to make an appointment. You can find her contact information in this newsletter as she is a graciously supports us with the purchase of a newspaper ad. 4

Chainsaw Certification The U.S. Forest Service Health and Safety Code requires that volunteers be certified annually to operate chainsaws and crosscut saws when working on Forest Service projects. The annual re-certification is comprised of a 4-hour indoor session and a 4-hour outdoor proficiency demonstration. The indoor recertification session covers required protective equipment; assembly, disassembly and maintenance of the saw; safe felling and bucking procedures, and a number of other topics. The outdoor proficiency demonstration requires that the individual demonstrate safe saw operation while tree felling and bucking. It has been 4 years since the Chapter has conducted a certification session. In past years, volunteers have recertified with other Chapters or trail maintenance organizations. This year we will be conducting the indoor re-certification session on March 8 th at the Forest Service Tonasket Ranger District conference room. The session will commence at 8:00 AM and conclude at 12:00 noon. The Chapter will conduct an outdoor session later in the spring prior to the first work party. MEET A MEMBER I bought my first horse 10 years ago.. It was a dream come true. Back Country Horseman appealed to me because of the safety of it's activities and the caring & open friendliness of the group. Not being a very experienced rider I appreciated how they classed the level of experience needed for each ride I am very impressed on what the organization does overall. So much good has come out of this group. Who wouldn't be proud to be a member. My husband, Mike, & I have been owner/operator of a Septic service/portable toilet business since 1972 (Actually I came into the picture in 1980) It's a crappy job. Unfortunately our busiest time is during the warm months which has left me out of participating in a lot of rides. If the 'boss' will agree to it I plan on taking time off now and then to go with you all. Mike and Miki Tibbs WELCOME TO A NEW MEMBER Handmade custom saddles recondition or repair leather items Bags, chaps halters, headstalls, breast collars, knife sheaves, holsters, ammo caes etc. Does almost all leather repair except boots One mile north of Tonasket, turn at Tonasket Vet office, take first right and go up the hill to the red roof barn. 9 DUTCH OVEN COOKING and ASSORTED RECIPES Because there seems to be a growing interest in Dutch oven cooking, the board members thought it would be a good idea to start including recipes, tips and techniques in the newsletter whenever the space allowed. (Yes folks, this is YOUR board at work, talking about their next meal.) We had a couple of recipes to start out with, but after the Sweetheart Auction, this one from Bob and Dawn Crowell will go first. I included Bob's name out of courtesy, but you all can probably figure out who did the actual work here. The actual recipe is for a conventional oven, but easily adaptable for the Dutch oven. Dawn Crowell's Country Style Spare Ribs Put the ribs in roasting pan or the Dutch oven (covered) and bake at 350 for about 4 hours. Check them about halfway through and remove any excess grease or liquid. When the meat starts falling from the bone, add BBQ sauce, any will probably do but Dawn used hickory smoke. Cook for about another hour or so. You can add salt and pepper earlier on if you think you are going to need it. This is not part of what Dawn prepared for the Sweetheart auction, but it is an interesting twist on BBQ sauce. Mix equal parts of jellied, whole berry cranberry sauce with a prepared BBQ sauce of your choice. Add some finely chopped celery and onion. It is best used on meats that are baked in the oven rather than grilled or BBQed because its hard to get the little round cranberries to stay put. 9

Okanogan Valley Chapter, BCHW Horse Sale Committee Meeting Minutes 13 February 2008 The horse auction committee met at Tom Windsor s house on Wednesday 13 February. Persons present were Rick Cornell, Heidi Cornell, Gail Sunde, Dave Sunde, Trygve Culp, Frank Oborne, Linda Oborne, Sandra Walters, Linda Parker, Skip Parker, Peggy Swanberg, Dave Swanberg and Tom Windsor. I have written below a compilation of my notes and my best recollection of discussion and commitments from the meeting. If there is something in my notes that is different from anyone else s understanding, please call or me and I will make appropriate corrections. Dave Swanberg reported that the insurance coverage for the sale is coming along and that we will get the policy in a timely manner. The work roster was annotated with volunteers names and the volunteer roster will be taken to the next general membership meeting to solicit additional volunteers. Tom will talk to the restaurant operator about use of the room adjacent to the restaurant for saddle storage and for signing the reader board on the roof of the building. Frank Oborne volunteered for the safety and sanitation position and has reported that we can get a good deal on Porta Potties from a local vender. Dave and Trygve will meet with Daryl Asmussen about building lease and auctioneer for the sale. Skip Parker and Richard Erickson will handle parking again this year. Janet Culp and Kathy Stafford will handle raffle ticket sales for the blanket. Drawing to be held at the fair in September. Tom will contact Brenda Ames to see if she will volunteer her horse and herself for sold horse penning again this year. Dave Swanberg will get an adequate supply of three part forms for horse and tack sale documentation. Tom Windsor and Dave Sunde will provide tables and chairs for registration of tack and use by raffle ticket sellers. Fees were agreed upon by the committee and remain basically the same as last year. Updated flyer was prepared and Dave Swanberg will get it to Susan Beck who has volunteered for publicity person again this year. Dave Swanberg will contact Cody Ames to see if he will be the Auction Veterinarian again this year. Pre-auction announcements were discussed and Dave Swanberg agreed to handle this. Robin Stice has volunteered to help with the auction and Dave agreed to contact her to see if she would read the pre-auction announcements. For those people who have a horse/tack auction procedures pamphlet, please review it and re-familiarize yourselves with procedures we have established. Please bring this pamphlet to each of our subsequent meetings. We will spend time discussing procedures at the next coordination meeting. Linda parker agreed to get the office personnel together for a coordination meeting sometime prior to our next general committee meeting. She will be prepared to discuss office procedures at our next general meeting. Tom Windsor will use sheriff s line tape to close off the cat-walks overlooking the sale ring pens. These cat-walks are unsafe (in fact hazardous) and we need to keep everyone off of them during the sale. It was agreed that we would allow commercial tack vendors to sell tack outside the building AFTER our tack sale was completed. A flat fee of $100 will be charged the vendor for this activity. Frank Oborne agreed to contact a tack vendor to see if he would be interested. Persons volunteering to bring or prepare signs for parking, registration, equine activity liability, arrows for routing tack, etc include Trygve Culp, Dave Swanberg, Sandra Walters, Dave Sunde and Tom Windsor. Sawhorses will be provided by Tom Windsor, Dave Sunde and Trygve Culp (2-3 each) Use of 2 way radios was discussed. It was reported that they didn t work too well last year. However, I would ask that persons working the auction bring one again this year if you have one. A copy of the activity volunteer sheet for the auction is submitted with these minutes. Please check my entries on this sheet to ensure I have not committed someone for a task for which he/she did not volunteer. The next meeting will be at Dave and Gail Sunde s residence on N. Pine Creek on Tuesday 18 March at 1830 hours. (That s 6:30 P.M. National Guard Time and for Marines and ex-marines that s when the big hand is on 6 and the little hand is between 6 and 7) Tom Windsor Committee Co-Chairman 10

Director s Report Trygve Culp There is a lot of activity from BCHW at this time of year most of it in the form of legislative business. I try and keep up with it but for the most part it overwhelms me. Several items have surfaced over the past month though that all of us need to be aware of so I ll give you a brief overview. Most importantly, the weed seed free hay legislation that was drafted by the State Department of Agriculture and introduced in the state legislature in January has been withdrawn. In its place, the State Noxious Weed Board, the Department of Agriculture, the Washington Hay Growers Association and a consortium of user groups including BCHW - have crafted a cooperative agreement to implement a voluntary program that will be administered by local county weed boards. The program will be up and running in Okanogan County this summer in time for hay harvest. I believe we can anticipate some increase in the cost of certified forage nothing that raises the grower s cost to produce is going to be free to the end user. Another item that caught my attention is the State Senate bill to increase vehicle license fees for trucks and pickups based on engine displacement. For a pickup like the one I drive my annual license fee would increase by $500 per year. BCHW sent an Action Alert out on this bill earlier this month I hope all of you contacted our Senator and representatives to protest this legislation. The final piece of legislation I ve been following is the Yukon to Yellowstone Act bill that was introduced in the Senate. This piece of legislation directs the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to cooperate with national agencies and Canadian officials working to create wildlife core areas, buffers and corridors in eastern Washington and the northern Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, this legislation dovetails with the federal Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act and the Wildlands Project. If you want to scare yourself silly read about those proposals sometime. Again, I hope all of you have contacted our legislatures to oppose this bill or will do so soon. On to topics more to my liking I certainly think that the addition of winter activities to our Chapter calendar has been a good stroke. I ve enjoyed going to the no host dinners and the packing clinic. I believe our winter packing clinic had more participation than we ve had in total at the past 3 clinics that were conducted outdoors during nice weather. I m hopeful that some participants will try horse camping this coming summer and I m really hopeful that some fledgling packers will join us for the Hangman Flats work party and gravel hauling later in the year for the Cabin Trail and Johnny Bell Trail turnpike projects that will require the use of pack stock. I d like to get a plug in here for the upcoming chainsaw certification session on March 8 th at the Forest Service conference room in Tonasket. It has been 3 or 4 years since we ve been through the indoor session for many of us. This is supposed to be an annual refresher and recertification program maybe we can get into compliance starting this year. Everybody who plans to use a chainsaw to clear trails on Forest Service administered lands should plan to attend this session. Finally, I d like to remind our members that the annual general meeting of BCHW is coming up fast. This year s meeting will be held in conjunction with the Jubilee in Ellensburg on Saturday, March 22. I have not yet seen an agenda for the meeting so I cannot tell you what business will be conducted, but it has been a busy and exciting year for BCHW and I m sure the meeting will reflect that. Additionally, it is always a wonderful opportunity to meet and visit with fellow backcountry horsemen from around the state. I hope you are planning to attend. Happy trails. 11
