1 OKANOGAN VALLEY CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Volume 24 Issue 4 April Officers President: Dave Swanberg Vice President: Gail Sunde Director: Tryg Culp FROM THE PRESIDENT S CHAIR Alt Director: Frank Oborne Secretary: Sandra Walters Treasurer: Linda Parker Legislative Chair: Dave Sunde Education Chair: Janet Logan Trail Boss: Tom Windsor Volunteer Hours: Peggy Swanberg Newsletter Editor: Heidi Cornell Historian: Teresa Naylor For newsletter submissions, or advertising, contact Heidi Cornell It has been a very busy time around here. The weekend at Jubilee in Ellensburg was busy and the preparation that I had to do in the weeks before the event put me behind on the farm chores. At least that is what Peggy is telling me. I haven t looked at her honey do list, but it is usually pretty long anyway. Regarding the Jubilee, from all indications and comments I have received, the Jubilee was enjoyed by all attending and it appears by first accounting that it was a successful fund raiser for BCHW. With that said, I want to thank all our members who donated items, supported the Jubilee by attending and donated their time to assist with putting on this event. Special thanks to you, Peg, for keeping me on track during these last four months. THANK YOU!!! (Peg says what she enjoys most is keeping me on track with lists she knows I will forget to do!) The North Central part of the State did quite well when the annual awards were handed out. Trygve Culp received the Lopper award for our Chapter, Bill Ford received the Lopper award for the Methow Valley Chapter, and George and Lou Young received the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Ferry County Chapter. Last but certainly not least, our Chapter received first place in the Chapter Display Awards. Thank you Peggy and Jessie Taylor for the idea and execution. As far as our local schedules, things will start to get pretty busy here at home base. Work parties on trails has already begun and of course, we have our big event on April 19 th with our annual horse auction. Be part of the fun, volunteer! Till then, Happy Trails, Dave See Jubilee Pictures starting on pg 9 1

3 TRAIL BOSS REPORT TRAIL ACTIVITIES YOUR AD COULD BE HERE APRIL 2008 There are two activities scheduled for April in the Bannon Mountain trailhead/trail complex area. The first is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday April 1 & 2. This is a work party to log out roads and trails in the area and to do some work on the corral area at the trailhead. We can use 4 wheelers for transporting workers and tools & equipment. Chainsaws, pole saws, loppers, power weed and limb trimmers, shovels, and Pulaski s will be needed for the jobs to be done. As per SOP we will meet at 0900 at the trailhead and be prepared to start work on or before Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Be sure to dress appropriately for whatever weather we encounter. It may be sunny and warm or it could be cool, rainy and windy. THINK SAFETY AT ALL TIMES, ESPE- CIALLY THOSE USING POWER TOOLS AND THOSE WORKING AROUND POWER TOOLS. There is work for everyone, not just those using hand or power tools. On Sunday 6 April we will have a club ride on some of the trails logged out on 1 and 2 April. I recommend having your horses shod, but most of the routes we will be using are relatively soft and an unshod horse should have no problems on the level 1 trails we will be traveling. I expect the ride to last about 4 hours with a brief stop for lunch along the way. Call me if you have any questions Tom Windsor Trail Boss ALL-SEW has our BCH logo and will apply to any type of clothing you would like. 3
4 The Mystery History The veterinarian hops onto the horse-ambulance truck s running board as you tow the ambulance in the main gate. She indicates another gate far uphill. As you drag slowly over the rough ground, she calls over the engine, "I just can t figure it out! I can feel the broken radius, the severe dislocation is visibly obvious even before I palpate it. I m certain it s broken, but I just can t figure out how she can put weight on her broken leg with no apparent pain!" The big, pregnant, Belgian-Thoroughbred-cross mare stands patiently in a far corner of a large paddock with her owners. She has a large triangular flap laceration on the right side of her chest above and slightly inboard of the right foreleg, but she isn t losing much blood. The oddest thing about her is the visibly lumpy upper right foreleg, and the fact that she holds the leg slightly forward, straight and rigid, as though no longer able to bend it. "What happened?" you say. "Not sure! Owner found her here this morning when she didn t come in to feed. Owner says there s some broken fence other side of the creek, but she s not sure it was done last night." Having regrettably seen many horses in agony with broken legs, you too are surprised that this big ole broodie doesn t seem terribly concerned. She stands calmly on all four, looking slightly bewildered. "I was going to drop her!" the vet says. "I even had the stuff drawn and the syringe in my hand. But then she stepped forward and put her full weight on that broken leg and just stood there! No pain! Ever seen that?" You never have. You back the ambulance near, and ramp down. The vet tries to lead the horse on, but the mare seems reluctant to move because of being unable to bend that right front leg. You tie one end of a rope to the injured leg just above the fetlock. As the vet urges the big mare forward and she takes her weight off that leg, you gingerly pull the foot in an outward, forward arc, allowing her to step ahead while keeping the injured leg straight. You repeat this as she labors up the ramp and into the ambulance. You want to wince with the pain she must be feeling, yet she exhibits absolutely none. At the equine hospital, X-rays show that the leg is actually quite sound. The palpable and visible lumpiness and dislocation in the entire upper foreleg proves to be a triangular shard of splintered fence lumber, seventeen-inches by threeinches at the wide end, which has entered on the mare s collision with the fence, torn open a flap of her chest, then deflected downward off the bone and broken off to lodge alongside the upper foreleg bone. The shard is surgically removed, and - albeit with some stiffness and bandage - you transport the mare home the next day. You split the brownies the owner gives you with the vet. 7 MEET A MEMBER Our names are Susan and David Bradford. We live 4 miles north of Riverside on Tunk Creek Road. Susan is an operating room nurse at Mid Valley Hospital and I am an obstetriciangynecologist, associated with Mid Valley Medical Group. We are both from South Texas ranching families. We have two mules, a sorrel named Dan and a bay mule named Jack. We became interested in BCHW through Dr. Linda Shields and Bill Slusher. Our schedules have not allowed us to be active in BCHW until this year, and now, we hope to attend more of the rides and the Wednesday meetings in David Bradford WELCOME TO A NEW MEMBER Ogborn Family, 982 Pine Creek Road, Tonasket, 98855, 486-o175, ogbornplumbing@hotmail.com Handmade custom saddles recondition or repair leather items Bags, chaps halters, headstalls, breast collars, knife sheaves, holsters, ammo caes etc. Does almost all leather repair except boots One mile north of Tonasket, turn at Tonasket Vet office, take first right and go up the hill to the red roof barn. 7
8 Director s Report Trygve Culp The 2008 Jubilee is in the can. Wow, what a great event. In my opinion we couldn t have done a much better job celebrating the new 501c3 BCHW. Everybody in the Okanogan Valley Chapter can be extremely proud our President, Dave Swanberg, as Chairman of the Jubilee Organizing Committee - did an absolutely superb job. The event was in typical Swanee fashion - very well organized with no visible glitches. I am fearful that he set the bar so high that it will be extremely difficult for next year s Chair to duplicate. I was also quite proud of the fact that our Chapter was so very well represented if my headcount is correct we had 14 folks in attendance. If every Chapter had been as well represented there would have been nearly 500 folks there for the membership meeting, banquet, auction and dance. Good going Okanogan Valley! The auction was fun with some really neat items. Ask Dave or Gail Sunde about their flying trip back to Tonasket to pick up the horse trailer and their new acquisition I believe they may have made the buy of the night. Congratulations to The Friends of the Okanogan Valley Chapter on their successful bid for the 2009 Head Table. Speaking of the dance, did we cut a rug or what? Again, I think Okanogan Valley had more folks on the dance floor at any given time than any other Chapter the only downside to the whole affair were the Charlie Horses I experienced early in the morning following the dance I m really glad that the Board of Directors meeting preceded the Jubilee this year. Frankly, it was nowhere near as much fun Following the routine committee reports and business stuff, several Chapters from the Westside made a determined run at derailing several provisions of the newly adopted by-laws concerning the election of state officers. They were not successful in their efforts, in fact neither of the motions submitted by Buckhorn Chapter to repeal specific sections of the By-Laws passed as requested in their motion. Frankly, I was glad of that as the whole deal smacked of throwing out the baby with the bath water. A motion from the Olympic Chapter to open the Director s Forum to the membership also failed. I will expand on these topics in my notes from the meeting that will be my column for next month s newsletter. In other new business, the Board approved a motion submitted by Capitol Riders to resume using the name Backcountry (one word) Horsemen of Washington once the old 501c4 corporation is formally dissolved. I voted against that motion none of my dictionaries have the word backcountry in them and my computer always underlines it in red. The board also voted in favor of a second motion from Capitol Riders to retain the registered logo but dropping the Inc. abbreviation. It was not clear to me if dropping that abbreviation constituted a change that will require a new legal filing. Anyway, I voted against that resolution, too. In other business, the Board was informed that our accountant has determined that all of our dues except the $9.13 per member that goes to BCHA are tax deductible as a charitable donation now that we are a 501c3. Members are cautioned to verify this with their personal tax advisors. The Board considered a lot of other information and business - I ll share that with you next month. Until then, happy trails. 8

12 Out Behind The Barn ONE WINTER NIGHT, WE BROUGHT ONE OF OUR HORSES HOME AFTER DARK. WE HAD TO WALK HIM ABOUT 3/4 MILE TO OUR HOUSE ON A LEAD LINE WITH MY HUSBAND FOLLOWING ME IN THE CAR TO LIGHT THE WAY. MEANWHILE AT HOME, WAS THE HEAD BULLY, KING OF THE WORLD,HORSE, BOBKENS. WELL HE HEARS US COMING AND STARTS ACTING ALL HIGH AND MIGHTY AND SNORTING AND THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW, HE DISAPPEARED FROM SIGHT. WE LAUGHED SO HARD. HE HAD HIT THE ICE AND ENDED UP SLIDING ON HIS SIDE ABOUT 25 FT DOWN THE HILLSIDE. HE JUMPED UP AND LOOKED AT US LIKE " I DID THAT ON PURPOSE". HE WAS STILL TOSSING HIS HEAD, BUT PICKED HIS WAY BACK UP A LOT MORE CAREFULLY. NEED ANYONE WORRY, HE WAS NOT HURT AT ALL. HE HAD FALLEN IN VERY DEEP SOFT SNOW AND JUST SLID DOWN THE HILL. 14 MINUTES OF THE BUSINESS MEETING MARCH 19, 2008 Meeting called to order at 7pm Guest speaker Larry Hudson from the Okanogan Weed Board spoke on weed seed free hay issue, now know as wilderness forage. The State is moving forward with this program. If the State program isn't implemented in time for our needs, Okanogan Co. is prepared to move forward independently to certify fields and make the hay available in our area. Information about who to call to certify a field and where the hay can be purchased will be made available. Guest speaker Jim Olson from Washington State Fish and Wildlife spoke regarding his need for letters of support from our chapter for two grant projects. The first project is in regards to the rather complicated purchase and access agreements to the Eder Ranch/9 Mile Creek Wildlife Area East of Oroville. The second grant project involves the purchase of 560 acres that will join Fish Lake & Scotch Creek AKA Hess Lake Coulee Creek Trail project. Letters of support for both projects will be written. January minutes were read and approved with no corrections or additions. Treasurer's report was read by Pres. Dave Swanberg and he reports that we are solvent. Director Tryg Culp reports he still has 2 calendars available and 2 others are committed to Bill Slusher but he hasn't picked them up nor has he paid so if anybody sees or speaks to him, tell him to send the money. Olympic and Capitol Riders Chapter decided the 501c3 changes were done illegally and they are asking that some things be changed back and this is not an issue that can be described in a few lines in the newsletter. At the Director's meeting Tryg will vote no on any issues pertaining to the reversal of previous votes. Trail Boss Tom Windsor reminded of the trail clearing on 3/25 starting at Fish Lake south to Scotch Creek. There has been no answer regarding weed spay in this area and if Tom does not hear from Swedberg by 3/35, we will not be able to spray. If enough people turn out to clear the trail, some could be dispatched to clear the trail from the headquarters/swedberg house South. There will be a trailride out of the Fish Lake parking lot on 3/30. See your Yearbook for location and basic trailride instructions. On 4/1 there will be a Bannon Mt. work party. ATVs and big chainsaws can be used. Installation of 6 sign posts needs to be done. Director Tryg Culp reports that some modification of the existing corrals at the Bannon trailhead needs to be accomplished by us because the location of the new toilet prevents adequate access for loading and unloading of cattle. This work needs to be done prior to June of this year. Trail Boss Tom and others will meet at 3:30 on 4/1 at the Sweat Creek trailhead to seek permission from the District Ranger for to install hitch rails and loading ramp in this area. Ferry Co. Chapter will also assist with this project. Jim Olson requested that any problem areas on the trail between Fish Lake and Scotch Creek/Hess Lake be reported to him. Dave Swanberg reported that the Sweetheart Auction and potluck was successful and everybody had a good time. Packing clinic was attended by 17 individuals at the CCC and it was deemed a successful day. Jeff Taylor reported a personal purchase of a pack saddle from Country Supply and that the quality and price were very favorable. Back to Dave Swanberg, Basic LNT training could happen on 5/31 and he will check to see if Byrum can come and if the CCC is available. 14
15 The Jubilee...its going to happen and it will be good. The Board recommends that we discontinue the Highway Clean-up so the contract will not be resigned. The clean-up scheduled for 4/8 is cancelled. The First Aid class that was scheduled for the March meeting was cancelled but will be rescheduled in the fall or winter. Tom Windsor reminded us that the horse/tack auction will happen on 4/19 and we need 2 or three more people to help at the sale. Call Tom Windsor and volunteer. His phone number is in the Yearbook. Back to Dave Swanberg again. Mark Morris requested that we write a letter inviting his Forest Supervisor on a ride on Whistler Mt. He would like to be able to acquire a trailhead and parking area off Highway 97 for easy access to this area. Several options are available including partnering with REI. Tryg Culp reports that the Ferry Co. chainsaw cert. class at Lambert Creek on 5/3 is open to our members. Ferry Co. will supply hamburgers and the rest will be potluck. Call George Young if you would like to attend. His phone number is listed in the Yearbook. Dave Swanberg announced that our very own Trygve Culp will be awarded the BCHW Lopper award and George and Lu Young will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2008 Jubilee. MPS to adjourn at 8:20pm Respectfully submitted Peggy Swanberg 15
