2 December Meeting In November, we do not hold a meeting so we can spend time with family or friend s to celebrate Thanksgiving. It is one time of the year to celebrate and give thanks for our blessings and extend and share with others. The tradition has been observed with a bounty of food such as a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn, green beans, rolls, corn bread, pumpkin, spice, or apple pies and a variety of family favorite dishes around a large table with talking, sharing stories, and laughter. If you travel be safe and enjoy the time with your family or friends. So, from our home to yours we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Our next meeting will be.. On Saturday, December 9, South Texas Thunderbird Club will hold their annual Christmas Party at Milano Italiano Ristorante at Wurzbach Road. We will meet at our usual time at 11:00 am. I have reserved a private room, and we will be able to select off their menu. Please bring a $ gift per person for a gift exchange. Bring something that you would like to take home. 3 October, Get Together In October, we did not hold our fourth Saturday meeting at McAdoo s Seafood Company Restaurant in New Braunfels, at 196 N. Castell Ave. because both the president and the vice president were under the weather. The president even got to spend three hours at the emergency room and is still trying to reach a complete recovery and it s a very slow process. The important news I was going to provide at the meeting was an update on our Show and Shine Car Display. We collected $75.00 on the day of the car Show and Acadiana matched the funds we collected. Therefore we raised $ towards our overall donation to our charity: St, Jude s Ranch for Children in Bulverde. I have talked with Laura Shepherd at the Ranch and I will be sending a letter and check to them in the near future, They are delighted to have our donation because they now have 38 children under their care. The end of the year is approaching and we need to think about the future of the club. We will need to elect new officers for the club in December. The terms for President and Treasurer expire this December 2017 and we still need to fill the vacant Secretary position, whose term will expire next December Remember this club can only exist if everyone works together. We are a social group whereby we: meet, socialize and maintain a spirit of good fellowship and participate in activities and when possible use our Thunderbirds and give back to the community. Most importantly a club cannot be run by just a few, they soon burn out. Please consider volunteering for one of the above positions by contacting your president. We all have information and ideas to share. The future of our club depends upon you. So far, I have not had anyone approach me willing to take over any of the positions open for next year in the club. It is important we find volunteers to fill these vacant officers or the future of this club is in jeopardy. I would hate to see the club disband after 38 years. Help to Keep Our Light Gleaming! Besides, electing new officers, it is a good time to renew your club dues for Please send in your yearly dues, the cost is only $ I would like to have them collected by the end of January. We also, need to have a new wavier update from each member for our files. Plus, provide your contact information and addresses, old or new, with any corrections. A club application form is provided on page12 for your convenience. Just copy, fill it out, sign and mail to the treasurer along with your dues. Your quick response would be greatly appreciated and will help in the transition of new officers. Social Outing Stan and Olga A, suggested that we meet on November 8, 2017 at 11:00 at the Lion and Rose Pub at the Rim for a pre- holiday get together luncheon just to socialize - no meeting. Agreed that it was an excellent idea. Therefore, mark your calendar for November 8th to visit with good friends. See y all at 11:00am. Lion & Rose Pub La Cantera Pkway San Antonio, TX

4 Journey into the South Texas Thunderbird Past Keep it Running and Looking Good: Attention to Pertinent Details By Frank Whitaker There are many things that happen to those of us who work on our own or other cars that result in some embarrassment or additional work or expense. Not all are as messy as the goof up I reported in the past, but they can have their own place in teaching us to pay attention to pertinent details so that we can avoid other embarrassments and expense. I am reminded of the mechanic who was working under the hood of his car when he received a telephone call. Since he didn t have a phone in his garage, he put down his trouble light and went into the house to talk to the caller. As you know, such telephone calls can go on for some time before it is broken off and the mechanic can get back to work on his project. In this instance, it was something over 45 minutes before the conversation was ended. On returning to the shop, after the telephone call, our mechanic found that the trouble light had been placed right under the air conditioning discharge line from the compressor. The light bulb was in direct contact with the hose. Can you imagine how much heat is generated by a 100-watt bulb in 45 minutes? I assure you it can be plenty. The hose was so hot that he couldn t keep his hands on it. In fact, it was like burning his hand on an exhaust manifold just to touch the hose. Things rocked along well enough for a couple of days or so, until Mr. Hotwrench went to the grocery store to replenish his pantry. The weather was hot, so our mechanic was using the air conditioning in his car. No problems until coming out of the grocery store and starting the engine. At that point a mist of sorts was seen coming out from under the hood. What do you suppose it was? You re right. The compressor discharge line had ruptured at the point of contact with the trouble light bulb. Freon and refrigerant oil was everywhere in the vicinity of the rupture. So, you can see that if Mr. Hotwrench had just paid a little more attention to pertinent detail and had either extinguished the light or hung it on a nail someplace where it would not burn anything, he would have avoided some expense and effort and would not have had to go without air conditioning in the interim. Our mechanic says he has learned from this experience. Perhaps you can too. 11/87 4

Where are U-joints located? 2. What does it mean if your tires are wearing on the inside and outside edges? Answers for the questions can be found on the Tech Tips page 7. The questions were obtained from funtrivia.com Cars Made from Cans! Do these pictures bring back memories? Albert Torney collected empty bottles and cans. Everyone thought that he was eccentric. After he died in 1998 his large collection of model cars made from aluminum cans was discovered. His collection was amazing and I will share a car with you each month. 7 Tech Tip Unlocking A Flairbird Trunk Lock By Dennis Moreau The wife and I were at a store and bought a floor lamp, we have a 66 bird, and I went to the car to open the trunk, to put the lamp in, and put the key in the slot, turned the key, and nothing happened. Luckily the lamp fit in the back seat. No big deal, right? wrong. A few days later, we went to the local locksmith, the locksmith, said, I like your car. Then he looked at the lock and said, I won't drill your lock set out for fear of damaging your car. He said in order to release the lock, you'll have to go through the back seat to release the catch that holds the lock. The next day the back seat comes out, and then you can see the spare tire is in the way of seeing the two bolts that hold the lower part of the lock. The tire can't be moved because it's locked down with the base of the jack, by a wing nut. If you have a six-foot arm that's an inch and a half in diameter, your worries are over. if not, your worries have just started. The next step is important, you go into the kitchen, and look for an ice-pick or some other utensil that has a sharp point on it. Return to the trunk and puncture the tire and release the air. This gives you just enough room to let the tire move sideways. Lucky the tire was going to be replaced the next week anyway, so no big loss. The two bolts holding the catch of the lower end of the lock are fastened by 2, 1/2" bolts. The only problem with that, is from the inside of the backseat to where the bolts are a span of about 4 and 1/2 feet. I used two 24-inch extensions plus one 20-inch extension, and 1/2-inch one deep socket, and then duck taped each joint before sticking them in the trunk. I did try a 1/2 universal socket, but at that length it was like trying to handle a 10-lb. bass at the end of a fly rod. When I did get the trunk opened I did find that it was not the first time for the trunk to be opened in this manner. The two bolts that held the bracket were miss-matched and the retainer clip that holds the linkage was put in reverse of the way it should have been. So, a new linkage clip, new spare tire, and several days of healing and we should be good to go. That is until the next surprise. Dennis is a member of our club and sent this article to the editor to use in our newsletter in September, and it just so happen, was published in this month s November /December Scoop as well. Answers to Automotive Trivia Questions from Page 6 1, Driveshaft: U meaning universal refers to the ability to rotate in all directional angles without losing RPM s. 2. You are not running enough air in your tires: Under-inflation is the worst enemy a tire can have. It causes increase treadwear on the outside edges of the tire. It also generates excessive heat, which weakens components and reduces tire durability. Over-inflation of the tires causes increased treadwear in the middle of the tire. 7
