1 1. Briones Camp Out Activity: Camp out inside group round house with fire pit inside, or tent camp out-side Age group: All Time of year: Spring, Fall, Summer. RSVP: East Bay Regional Parks ( ), Maud Whalen group site. Location: Bear Creek park entrance, Briones SP. Information: Scouts take easy hike in one mile from parking lot to site. In dry weather two vehicles can bring in supplies. Site has bathrooms, running water, BBQ pits and picnic tables. You can all sleep on cement pad in roundhouse or in tents out side. There is a flat field on site for games, and great hiking from site out in to park. Great camp for young scouts, fenced in site. You can have fire year round, bring wood and fire buckets. 2. Reach Helicopter Activity: Tour of helicopter and safety class Age Group: All RSVP: (707) Location: 5005 Marsh Drive, Concord, CA Information: Tour of helicopter, safety class with pilot and nurses. This is great fun for all ages, the boys get to climb all over the helicopter and try on the flight helmet. Note: The crew may need to take off if they get a call. The site is right off Hwy. 4, at the back of the airport. 1

Diablo Camp Out Activity: Camp out, hike, and visit Rock City Age Group: All Time of Year: Summer, Fall RSVP: Reserve America on-line, Location: Mt Diablo State Park Information: There are lots of small sites and group sites to reserve on the mountain. Boys can hike to Rock City, and up the mountain on the ridge trail. All sites have running water, bathrooms, BBQ pits, and picnic tables. Watch out for poison oak and food stealing raccoons. Set up rules for climbing rocks before you go in to Rock City. 5. The Jungle Activity: Den meeting and group play Age Group: Tiger, Wolf, Bear Time of Year: All needed Location: 1975 Diamond Blvd. Concord, CA (Willows Shopping Center) (925) , Information: This is good for a parent s den planning meeting and/or many advancement games. Have the boys make teams to play and learn together. Great way to bond the boys and parents of the den. The Jungle has a full restaurant and plenty of staff to watch the boys. Meet in the quiet room up stairs to the right. Fee for kids at the door, electronic games will need tokens sold at the door and counter. 6. China Camp Camp Out (Back Packing) Activity: Camp-out and Intro back packing hike Age Group: Webelos Time of year: Spring, Summer, Fall RSVP: Reserve America on-line, Location: China Camp SP, San Pedro Road-at the end, San Rafael, CA (415) Information: Intro back packing hike along shoreline trail from ranger station to campground. Cars can be shuttled to camp ground parking lot. Easy trail hike 4 miles or so, big campsites. All sites have running water and bathrooms. You can have a campfire year round; firewood is sold at the campground entrance. Good time to let the Webelos scouts try out back packing gear and food, with the cars close just in case. Don t forget to visit the pier and museum. 2

China Camp Bike Ride Activity: Bike ride Age Group: Bears, Webelos Time of Year: All needed Location: China Camp State Park, San Pedro Road-at the end, San Rafael, CA (415) Information: Bike ride all over China Camp State Park. China camp has all levels of trails for mountain biking with the boys. You can look at a topography map online to pick a rout based on skill level. Ride along the water down to the pier. May not be good ride for road bikes. 8. S.F. Maritime Museum and Ships (BART to SF) Activity: Tour of tall ships and steamers at Maritime Museum in Fisherman s Warf, SF Age Group: Wolf, Bear, Webelos needed Location: Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco, (415) Information: Take BART in to the city, off at Embarcadero station, walk up the piers to Fisherman s Warf. The Hyde St. Pier will be after the Warf. The museum is just after the pier a half block or so. Eat lunch next to the block and tackle display. You can add the USS Pampanito tour if you want. The Pampanito is on It s own pier back towards the Warf. You will be walking 6 miles or so when back to BART. 3

Angel Island Hike or Bike Ride Activity: Ferry ride, Hike and Tour Angel Island Age Group: Wolf, Bear, Webelos Time of year: Summer, Fall RSVP: Only for the ferry ride Location: Angel Island S.F. Bay Information: Take BART to the city off at the Embarcadero station. Catch the ferry at the ferry building. Off at Angel Island, hike to the east around the island, tour the immigration station. Have lunch at the beach under the station. Walk around through the army buildings and past the missile site. The beach after the army barracks in the south east side is fun to play on. You can turn back from there if time is short, if not walk around the island back to the ferry. This all can be done on bikes; some hills may have to be walked. They sell ice cream at the Café by the ferry; good eats at the end of the hike. 10. Shell Ridge Hike Activity: Hike Age Group: All Time of year: Spring, Summer, Fall needed Location: 1035 Castle Rock Road, 1/2 mile past Northgate High School Information: Great easy hiking for all ages of scouts. You can pick the difficulty based on the group. Good area for finding fossils to look at and or make a mold of. In the spring or fall you can cast animal tracks. This area has all the different rock types to see. Older scouts could mountain bike here. In the spring you can fly kites. 11. Oakland Zoo Visit or Sleep Over Activity: Day visit or sleep over with the Zoo animals. (Tent Camping) Age Group: All (See the Zoo site for program dates) RSVP: Yes, a few months in advance for a big group Location: Oakland Zoo, 9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland, off Highway 580 (510) , ext 100, Information: Learn about the animals from inside the Zoo, feed the animals and camp out in the hills in the Zoo. The Zoo runs a great overnight program. During the holidays the Zoo Train in done up in lights at night. 4

5 12. Brannan Island State Park Activity: Camp Out, Fishing and Swimming Age Group: All Time of Year: Summer, Fall RSVP: Yes, a few months in advance. Summer may be harder to get. (Go to: Location: Highway 160 a few miles south of the city of Rio Vista in Sacramento County. The park is located on the lower peninsular extension of Brannan Island, and is surrounded by the Sacramento River on the west, Three Mile Slough on the southeast, and Seven Mile Slough on the northeast. Information: Great camp ground, big group sites, full bathrooms with showers, running water. You can get one group site or a few small sites. Firewood is sold on site. Good safe place for young swimmers. The tide does come in and out here, so set up high on the beach. This campground is always windy; kite flying is a fun activity. 13. Sacramento Train Museum on Amtrak Activity: Train ride to Old Sacramento Train Museum Age Group: All RSVP: Get your group tickets for a discount at the museum. Call Amtrak to check for group sales. Location: Down Town Martinez to Old Sacramento, CA Information: Fun train ride in am up to Old Sacramento. Walk over to the train museum, and see Old Sacramento. Bring or buy your lunch, lots of picnic tables to eat at, and restaurants. Great Toyshops and Ice Cream! Achievements: Webelos Traveler 5

Water Treatment Plant Tour Activity: Tour water treatment plant (CCCSD) Age: Webelos II Time of year: ALL (Only open to tour M-F) RSVP: Yes, Kit Ohlman at (925) Location: 5019 Imhoff Pl, Martinez, CA Information: Tour can be done in the summer when school is out or on a break. Tours are only during the work week. By "following the flow" through the treatment process, scouts see how we clean wastewater and how pollution can affect the water in the bay. 15. Garbage Transfer Station Tour Activity: Tour of Martinez Garbage Transfer Station (Allied Waste) Age: Webelos Time of Year: All (Only open to tour M-F) RSVP: Yes, Call (925) Location: 951 Waterbird Way, Martinez, CA Information: See how our garbage is processed and shipped out to recycle and or to the landfill. 16. Martinez Marina Hike/Bike/Fishing Activity: Hike at the Martinez Marina Time of Year: All Location: Martinez Marina, past downtown, take Ferry Street in to the park Information: Hike or bike from the marina parking area out to the remains of the schooner Forester, The beach next to the ship is great for lunch and play time. The trail continues along the shoreline out to the train tracks. For Fishing the Bait store has all you need. There is a skate park next to the playground for bikes, skates, and skateboards. 6

Bodega Bay Tide Pools Activity: Tour of tide pools Age: Bear, Webelos Time of Year: Summer, Fall RSVP: Yes Location: Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Nevada Ave, Moss Beach, CA (650) Information: Full guided tour of the tide pools, call first to reserve a guide. These are the best tide pools around. Lots of picnic tables to eat lunch up by the ranger station. 18. Big Basin Red Wood Park State Park Activity: Hike or Camp Time of year: Spring, Summer, Fall RSVP: Camping only, Reserve America, (800) 444-PARK (7275) Location: Big Basin Way Boulder Creek, California, U.S.A (831) Information: This park is tucked in to the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains. There are hikes for all ages; the camping is fun with all the tall redwoods surrounding the sites. All sites have fire pits, water and bathrooms. The Redwood loop trail is a great hike for young scouts. 19. Crocket Bridge Bike Ride Activity: Bike Ride Across Bridge and Back Age: Bear, Webelos Location: Crocket shoreline, Highway 80 Information: Park across the street from the Dead Fish recusant, Ride over the bridge to the scenic overlook on the other side for a snack or lunch. You can ride to the fist gas station in Vallejo for an ice cream. This is a short ride, but the views and bridge are awesome. 7

REI Rock Climb and Leave No Trace Class Activity: Rock Climb and Leave No Trace Class Age: Wolf, Bear, Webelos RSVP: Yes Location: REI Concord, 1975 Diamond Blvd Ste B100 Concord, CA (925) Information: This is normally set up on Saturdays, The REI staff has the boys rock climb on the climbing wall, then they have a Leave No Trace class that follows the BSA guidelines. This may be booked at other REI stores, just call. 21. Pleasant Hill Movie Theater Tour Activity: Tour of Theater RSVP: Yes Location: Century 16 Downtown Pleasant Hill, 125 Crescent Dr., Pleasant Hill, CA Information: Go for tour in the morning, see behind the scenes of the theater, and then see a movie. 22. Chuck E. Cheese Den Planning Meeting Activity: Parents Meeting and Boy Mixer Location: Chuck E. Cheese, 1611 Willow Pass Rd Concord, CA 94520, (925) Information: Let someone else do all the work. Have dinner; let the boys bond, while the parents work out the details for the year. Great fun for all. Achievements: Video game belt loop, Team play 8

Angels Camp, Camp Out Activity: Camp Out, Caving, and Geology Class Age: Webelos RSVP: Yes, camp ground or cabin Location: Angels Camp, CA Information: Camp or cabin (depends on the weather, there are a few different camps, and cabin rental sites online), go to some of the caves in the area (Mercer Caverns, Moaning Caverns), take an incredible geology class down town at Stories in Stone rock shop (Call and RSVP, 1249 South Main Street Angels Camp, CA 95222, (209) ), swim in White Pines Lake, eat lunch at the great restaurants in Old Town Angels Camp. If you time it right, you can incorporate it all with Webelos Weekend at Camp Wolfeboro. 24. Soda Springs Tubing and Snow Play Activity: Snow Play and Tubing Time of year: Winter Location: Off highway 80, at Soda Spring, Information: Great fun for the whole pack and families. Prices are reasonable. Tubing, sledding, skiing, snow play, and a mini snowmobile. Eat a great lunch at the lodge. First ski resort on highway 80. 9

10 25. Briones Regional Park Climbing Hike Activity: Hike and Rope Climb Age: Tiger, Wolf. Bear Location: Briones Alhambra Creek Staging Area, off Reliez Valley Road Information: Start at the staging area parking lot. Take the Alhambra Creek Trail up to the left of the creek. The trail gets very steep but not un-safe about a half mile in. Tie ropes up to the trees at the top and have the boys pull themselves up, helping each other along with teamwork. Put a few parents at the top and bottom. Watch for mountain bikers and other hikers. After you all make it up, it is an easy hike up to the left, then down the ridge back to the parking lot, another mile or so. Have a snack or lunch at the top of the ridge. 26. Briones Regional Park Pond Hike Activity: Hike, Animal Print Casts Age: Bear, Webelos Time of Year: Spring, Summer, Fall Location: Briones Regional Park Information: Drive to the loop at the end of Briones Road, off Alhambra Valley Road. Park at the loop, take Briones road trail up to Marick Lagoons to cast animal tracks and see the newts in the pond. Have lunch and hike back to the cars. Hike is 3-4 miles. 27. Iron Horse Trail Bike Ride Activity: Bike Ride Time of Year: Spring, Summer, Fall Location: Iron Horse Bike Path, off Highway 4 at Solano Information: Start at the trailhead on Solano drive off highway 4, just past the Dodge Dealer. Park across the street from the trailhead. Ride the trail to the Willows shopping center. Have a snack or lunch at Willows and then ride back. Bring water in the summer it is a hot ride. All flat, about 6 miles round trip. Achievement: Bike Belt Loop 10

Jelly Belly Factory Tour Activity: Tour of Candy Factory Location: Jelly Belly Factory, Vacaville, CA. 1 Jelly Belly Lane JB-BEANS ( ) Information: Tour is great for all ages, better tour during the week. Have lunch at the instore restaurant, or bring a bag lunch. Dress in class A for a picture (They take) on the tour. Try out all the bean flavors at the candy counter. There is a spittoon for the bad ones. 29. Spend all day, bag lunch or lunch at the café. 34. Chabot Space & Science Center Visit/ Sleep Over Activity: Space Science, Planetarium, Telescopes RSVP: Yes, for sleep over Location: Chabot Space & Science Center Skyline Blvd. Oakland, CA , Information: Great place to spend the day or come to a sleep over program. Free star gazing on Saturday nights. Bring a bag lunch or eat at the café. 13

They have a DVD player to watch movies (bring your own movies). We watched 20,000 Lieges Under the Sea. Order pizza to eat with the movie, or bring a snack. Program comes with parking included on the pier. Play the vintage arcade games next to the sub on the pier before you board (remember to bring extra money for the games). 36. Big Basin Red Woods Train Ride to Santa Cruz Activity: Train Ride to and Play at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Age: Bears, Webelos Time of Year: Summer, Fall Location: Santa Cruse Board Walk, CA Information: Ride the train in to Big Basin Redwoods, Eat lunch, ride back to Santa Cruz for fun at the beach. This can be a camp out if you start at Big Basin and visit the beach for the day. 37. 15 38. Sibley Volcano Hike Activity: Hike Age: Bear, Webelos Location: 6800 Skyline Blvd., Oakland, CA Information: Park at the Old Tunnel Road entrance; walk up Quarry Road to Quarry trail. You can see the volcano once at the top. Eat lunch at the top, and then walk back down. There are a few options to get back to the cars down the hill. The Views of the bay are great. This is on the rim of the bay list. 39. BSA- Ranchos Los Mochos Camp Out Activity: Camp Out RSVP: Yes, 2 months in advance for summer Location: Mines Rd, Livermore, CA (510) or Emily.Determan@scouting.org Information (from their website): Rancho Los Mochos, located in the hills above Livermore, CA is home to many training courses, Cub Scout camping activities and Spring Camporees. Rancho Los Mochos has many large camp areas, making it ideal for troop, as well as multi-troop functions. Campgrounds feature fire rings for ground fires (restricted use during high fire danger periods), picnic tables and piped water. This camp serves as a year-round camp available for unit campouts and activities and is a host for council and district training courses and Cub Scout camps. It is situated atop the El Cerrito hills and can be used as the hub for visits to local historical sites, San Francisco and the surrounding area. Camp Herms can be used in multiple ways for many different activities and events, making this facility one of our most used camps. The facilities include a meeting lodge with kitchen, campsites, and sleeping shelters. The upper rim sites give great views of San Francisco Bay if it is not too foggy. 41. Point Reyes Camp Out, Back Packing Activity: Back Packing, Camp Out Age: Webelos Time of year: Spring, Summer, Fall RSVP: Yes, 3 months in advance Location: Point Reyes National Seashore Campground 76 Bear Valley Road, Point Reyes Station CA Point Reyes is located approximately 30 miles (50 km) north of San Francisco on Highway 1 along the west coast of California (415) Information: Hike in to SKY CAMP. 1.4 miles in to camp. View the ocean from camp. Sky Camp is located on the western side of Mt. Wittenberg at an elevation of 310 meters (1025 feet). In clear weather, it has a sweeping view of Point Reyes, Drakes Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. The easiest and shortest approach is a 2.2 km (1.4 miles) moderate uphill hike or bicycle ride from the Sky Trailhead (elevation 250 meters (840 feet)) on Limantour Road. 16

Back on BART. 4-5 mile hike. 43. There is not a group camp, reserve a few sites to fit your needs. Firewood sold on site. General store and playground. Fish and play in the Gualala River. All sites have lots of shade. 46. Urban Ore, Build Something Activity: Create Something / Recycle Location: 900 Murray Street, Berkeley, CA (510) Information: Have the boys collect items to build or create robots, puppets or anything they can come up with. Give them a price limit and have them buy the items at the counter. 47. Stinson Beach, Lower Dipsea Trail Hike with Breakfast Activity: Breakfast and Hike RSVP: Room in café only for one den Location: Stinson Beach CA. Information: Have breakfast at the Park Side Café by the beach parking lot. After breakfast hike up Arenal Ave. back to highway 1 to the Dipsea Trail head. The hike takes you up the hill along the creek. The trail is like a rain forest. After the trees the trail opens up to a panoramic view of the beach and coast. Come back down the hill to play at the beach. 18

Briones Breakfast (Boys Cook) Activity: Boys Cook Breakfast Age: Wolf, Bear, Webelos Location: Briones Alhambra Creek Staging Area, off Reliez Valley Road Information: Bring your camp cooking gear, set up stations for the boys to cook. Pancake station, egg station. and so on. When done eat up. Clean in camp basins. Site has tables, restrooms, and running water. You can play games in the field next to the tables after breakfast. 49. Sonora Pass Back Packing Hike (Dardanelles) Activity: Backpacking hike camp out Age: Webelos II Time of year: Summer, Fall (Wilderness and fire permit) Location: Highway 120 to 108, off at Clark Fork, stay left up the hill over fence creek, left on dirt road after fence creek, past fence creek camp ground to end of road, park at the county line trail head. (Carson Iceberg Wilderness) Information: 2.5 mile hike in to McCormick Creek. Camp along the creek. Filter water only. Late Fall the creek may be low, but never dry. When you are centered in the McCormick Creek valley with the Dardanelles peaks north and south, there is a big rock with a great fire circle and camp right between the creek and trail. Lots of fire wood around. This valley is like Yosemite just no people. Do not go at the start of dear season due to hunters. This is a great beginner backpack trip, some up hill on the way in, down hill back. 50. Yuba River Camp Out Activity: Camp Out Time of year: Summer, Fall Location: Yuba River off highway 80 by Soda Springs, CA Information: 4x4 to free campsites along the Yuba River. Pit toilet, bring your own water. Good swimming and fishing. 19
