Tandridge Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter Bulletin 10 April 27 th - May 11th Dear Neighbourhood Watch Members We have a recurring trend of incidents with doorstep callers who target areas offering small household products for sale. Sometimes called Nottingham Knockers and although that term is in the public domain, many that we have stopped and called to account for their actions recently in Tandridge, also hail from Eastbourne. Callers may claim to be ex-convicts attempting to mend their ways, however these individuals are not part of any recognised rehabilitation scheme. Please warn your neighbours, particularly the elderly or vulnerable, not to open the door to strangers or buy or sell on the doorstep. If a caller is not genuine, they may be gathering information for future crime. Please also keep in mind that if cold callers don t get any sales in your area, they are less likely to return. Some people will purchase items and pay them something, just to get rid of them, and there have been cases of elderly residents handing over large sums as these people can be very persistent and confrontational. Wanted man Joey Akehurst was posted on Facebook by Sussex and Surrey Police last month and was located recently thanks to appeals. He has since been charged and pleaded guilty to offences. So far he has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for 2 of the burglaries in Sussex and is still waiting to be sentenced for further Surrey offences in the Tandridge Area that took place over the past few months. Lingfield and Smallfield Between May 1 st and May 3 rd an unoccupied house being renovated was broken into in Plough Road, Smallfield and a new oven, hobs and extractors were stolen (ref ). Burglary Business and Community Lead was stolen from the dormers of houses under construction in Hare Lane, Lingfield between April 29 th and May 2 nd (ref ). Between May 3 rd and May 4 th the electricity to a barn was cut in order to de activate the alarm and the security light. Several Stihl garden tools were stolen (ref ).

3 A car was stolen from Headland Way, Lingfield at around April 29 th and later found burnt out in Blindley Heath (ref ). A front number plate was stolen from one vehicle and the rear number plate from another in Tandridge Lane, Lingfield sometime between May 1 st and May 2 nd (ref ). Bletchingley, Nutfield and South Nutfield The alarm on a house in Peter Avenue, Oxted sounded at April 2 nd. A neighbour discovered that a large window and the French door at the rear of the property were open. An untidy search of the house had been carried out, the alarm panel had been torn off the wall and various items had been collected together presumably for removal before the suspect was disturbed. The victim recalls seeing a skinny male with a bum bag on his hips loitering near the house as the victim was going out (ref ). On May 2 nd between and Godstone Road, Bletchingley entry was made to a property through a rear conservatory window and the front door was then forced open when the suspects exited the property. A new Samsung TV in its box together with money, clothing and a safe were stolen. There was a further linked incident in the same road between and that day when the door of a property and the door locks were broken. After an untidy search gold jewellery and a laptop were stolen (ref /45192). At May 11 th the garden sensor light came on in the rear garden of a house in High Street, Nutfield waking the victim. Two males were tampering with the sensor and when challenged fled the scene, Soon afterwards a white Ford Transit van with a sticker detail on the rear drove off at speed from the junction next to the property. One of the the males was described as being six feet tall and was wearing a blue/grey checked shirt and had a hood up over his face. The other white male aged late 20 s/early 30 s was under six feet tall, clean shaven, short hair wearing dark clothing and a hoodie (ref ). Burglary Business and Community The shutter door of a business unit in Brewer Street, Bletchingley was rammed at around May 4 th. Stihl tools were stolen but the incident was captured on CCTV. The vehicle involved was a Mitsubishi Shogun (possibly a 1998 model between ) with a sunroof. The vehicle was coloured blue on the top half of the vehicle and silver on the bottom half. The wheels were black with no hub caps

4 and there was a wheel on the boot with no cover over it. The occupants were: Driver - light coloured baseball cap, black round neck jumper with the logo EA7 with something underneath possibly under lined in white or smaller writing of the make (Emporio Armani), dark trackies and trainers which were white and dark coloured. Front Passenger - large build male, tall wearing navy trackies with the bottoms tucked in to dark socks, dark trainers, 2 toned hoody white/light grey body, dark arms and hood, full zip up the front and white drawstrings. On the left breast was a small logo possibly a circle shape. He was wearing gloves 3rd male - dark trackies, dark trackie hoodied top with white zip, white drawstrings, royal blue balaclava thing, dark trainers with white soles wearing gloves. 4th male - dark sleeveless gillet, hoody with white hood and dark sleeves, blue jeans, some sort of red top or something hanging out the bottom of the jacket at the back, black balaclava, dark trainers. He had very skinny legs (ref ). Despite increased police patrols in both marked and unmarked vehicles there have continued to be a number of incidents in which missiles have been thrown or fired at vehicles in South Nutfield. On April 30 th at around windows of two cars were smashed in Mid Street and on May 2 nd a windscreen was smashed in Clay Lane. A parked vehicle in Barfields, Bletchingley was damaged with deep scratches between May 6 th and May 7 th (ref ). A motorcross bike: red honda crf red levers / number 88 / black, red and yellow dangeruk graphic kit and a motorcross bike: red and black honda crf leo vince carbon fibre twin exhaust/ red asv levers/ red talon foot pegs / badboy black and red kits/ number 367 were stolen from Castle Square, Bletchingley between May 6 th and May 7 th (ref ). Overnight May 9 th to 10 th a motorcycle was stolen from a rear garden in Godstone Road, Bletchingley (ref ). Oxted, Hurst Green, Godstone and South Godstone

5 Between April 26 th and April 27 th an offender, after first using a wheelie bin to gain access to the roof of a garage in High Street, Godstone, proceeded to break through the roof. A large quantity of scrap was stolen (ref ). Then between the same times damage was caused to padlocks of a gate in Leigh Place Lane, Godstone and a garage was entered. A quad bike, Ifor Williams trailer, a Koboto tractor and a lawn mower were stolen. The driver of a Daihatsui 4 Trak was seen behaving suspiciously in the vicinity of this incident (ref ). Between May 4 th and May 5 th the bolt and padlock of a shed were forced open with a crowbar, the offenders having entered the property in Salisbury Road, Godstone via a back gate. A Mountfield lawnmower, a Stihl strimmer and a cultivator were stolen (ref ). Between the same times an automatic Husqvarna mower was also stolen from a store house in the rear garden of a property in High Street, Godstone (ref ). A shed at the end of a garden in Pollards Oak Road, Hurst Green was forced open around April 28 th and an electric fence around a chicken pen was damaged (ref ). Between May 10 th and May 11 th a garage attached to a house in Chestnut Copse, Hurst Green was broken into and six fishing rods were stolen (ref ). Two wooden gates were stolen from the rear garden of a house in Trevereux Hill, Oxted between May 2 nd and May 4 th (ref ). Between May 7 th and May 8 th stables were broken into in Byers Lane, South Godstone and tools were stolen. The fence between two properties was also cut. This was one of a number of crimes in the area including theft of 11 puppies from Brickhouse Lane and damage to fencing in Brickhouse Lane and Hare Lane (ref ). Burglary Business and Community Between May 6 th and May 7 th oil was stolen from a large outside oil storage tank in the rear garden of a property in Gibbs Brook Lane, Oxted (ref ). Criminal Damage A catapult was fired at the front first floor window of a house in Woodhurst Lane, Oxted breaking the glass between May 3 rd and May 4 th (ref ). A truck was stolen from a driveway in Manor Close, South Godstone between April 28 th and April 29 th (ref ).

6 The rear passenger window of a vehicle parked in Lagham Road, South Godstone was damaged by a catapult between May 2 nd and May 3 rd (ref ). Between April 27 th and April 29 th a vehicle was stolen from a car park in High Street, Godstone (ref ). A brick was used to smash the window of a vehicle parked in Beadles Lane, Old Oxted between April 30 th and May 1 st (ref ). Between May 8 th and May 9 th the window of a van parked in Titsey Road, Oxted was smashed and damage was caused to the door handle. Nothing was stolen (ref ). Caterham, Caterham on the Hill and Chaldon The front door of a house in Birchcroft Close, Chaldon was kicked in and the offender made off over a fence and through the fields at April 28 th after being disturbed by the occupiers (ref ). Between and May 5 th a small kitchen window of a house was forced open. Jewellery boxes and costume jewellery were stolen but subsequently found by a member of the public in Riddlesdown (ref ). At May 4 th the occupants of a house in Banstead Road, Caterham on the Hill were awoken when the front door was forced open and the chain cut with bolt croppers. A car key was removed from a table in the hall and a car parked on the driveway was stolen. CCTV on premises nearby revealed that a white Audi 4x4 vehicle was in the vicinity at the time with two white males aged approx late 20's-30's. The driver was tall, stubbly looking wearing a baseball cap and he got out of the Audi and appeared to be looking at the car that was stolen (ref ). At around May 9 th a garage was broken into in Thomas Avenue, Caterham and a full set of Adams Sports Golf Clubs were stolen (ref ). Burglary Business and the Community A building site was broken into in Westway, Caterham on the Hill between May 1 st and May 2 nd and tools and a saw were stolen from a locked cupboard (ref ). At around May 9th a suspect entered the Church Walk Mall, Caterham by smashing a locked glass door and smashing the window of a retail unit with a scaffolding pole. A large quantity of jewellery was stolen. The suspect was identified on CCTV and is currently being sought (ref ).

7 An abusive note was found on a car parked in a private car park in High Street, Caterham on April 30 th. The rear passenger door had been spat on and a large bin moved behind the car (ref ). Between April 28 th and April 29 th four original hubcaps were removed from a vehicle in Stafford Road, Caterham. A person was seen to remove these and to get into a white van Registration Number DYO 7RUT and drive off with them (ref ). At around 05.30may 7 th a suspect who had been trying to open car doors in Loxford Way, Caterham was detained by officers and was charged with vehicle interference. He pleaded guilty at Court next day and was given a 2 month suspended sentence (ref ). Between May 3 rd and May 4 th a van was broken into in Banstead Road, Caterham on the Hill. The glove box was ripped off but nothing was stolen (ref ). The front and rear number plates were stolen from a vehicle in Matlock Road, Caterham on the Hill between May 3 rd and May 4 th (ref ). Warlingham, Tatsfield and Woldingham Damage to locks and windows together with graffiti were discovered at a derelict property in Greenway, Tatsfield on April 23 rd (ref ). At May 5 th a barn was broken into in Westmore Green, Tatsfield and power tools stolen. The back door of an adjoining house was smashed and a wedding ring and engagement ring were stolen together with a Toyota Hilux which was subsequently recovered (ref ). At May 5 th the alarm was activated at a house in Butlers Dene Road, Woldngham. The window to the rear lounge was damaged. The metal frame bent and the handle broken off. Although entry was gained to one room, nothing was stolen (ref ). Burglary Business and the Community A container on a construction site in Long Hill, Woldingham was broken into between May 6 th and May 8 th and tools were stolen (ref ).Between and on May 8 th the pvc frame to a double glazed bedroom window was smashed in the same road. After an untidy search a jewellery box and contents were stolen (ref ). A possible attempted break in also occurred between midnight May 5 th and May 7 th. The occupier discovered that an implement, possibly a

8 screwdriver, had been used to scratch the door handle but no entry had been gained (ref ). Criminal Damage Considerable damage has been caused to a young children s play area in Mint Walk, Warlingham over the past two weeks and a new piece of equipment has had to be fenced off as a result. It is believed that a group of teenagers are responsible and if you have any information that could help us identify the young people involved please get in touch with us (ref ).
