Further information will be provided as final plans are confirmed. EVENTS SCHEDULE Event , Sunday, Sept. 9, 2:00 PM, Lake Eureka Park/Davidson Memorial Park, Eureka Enjoy the summer while it lasts. Join us for a hike that begins on an easy, paved, loop trail which skirts both a grassy field and a shady creek. We then follow a gentle upgrade to the bluff overlooking the creek. From there we encounter a few dips as we crisscross the disc golf fairways before coming to the level area in the Davidson section. Our return trip will generally parallel the way we came and ultimately emerge from the woods near our cars. Dining optional afterwards. Directions: From Peoria, take Rt. 24 east to Eureka. Turn right at Rt. 117 South (Main St. stoplight, courthouse on corner). Turn right onto Lake Rd. (gas station/shopping plaza). Go 1 block, turn right into lower park below the dam. Follow park road to the end by the Litwiller ball field sign. Hike Leader: Cindy Alexander, Saturday, Sept. 15, 8:15 AM, Illinois River Sweep (meet at Forest Park Nature Center) Please join members and friends of the Pimiteoui Trail Assoc for the annual Illinois River Sweep sponsored by the Friends of the Illinois River on September 15. The Forest Park Nature Center will be the starting point and hosting headquarters where everyone will assemble and receive instructions from J.D. Russell, the Chief Naturalist at Forest Park, before going out to one of 6-8 areas along the Illinois River to clean up junk and debris that has accumulated during the past year. I will serve as
one of the River Sweep captains and will organize a team to go to the Rest Haven site, which is a small park-like green space situated along the River about a mile south of Mossville within a residential area called the "lanes." Everyone is welcome to join me in cleaning up this location, or choose one of the other pick-up areas that are designated for clean up. Please note: If you choose to go to one of the other areas, please notify me, so you can get credit for participating in the River Sweep. Car pooling can be arranged as needed. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided. Organizers of the River Sweep at Forest Park Nature Center are requesting that you call to pre-register prior to the event. If you can't pre-register, please come anyway. Their number is There is an appreciation cookout for those participating in the River Sweep starting at approximately 12:00 pm at Popular Lane Park. Please call with any additional questions. River Sweep Leader: Mark E. Klokkenga, Event , Wednesday, Sept. 19, 5:30 PM, Forest Park, Peoria This will be the first mid-week hike for our club. Our history is to have them on Saturday or Sundays. However, we've had some requests to have some mid-week hikes and events so we are "testing the trails". There are three additional Wednesday hikes scheduled during October. There is not a better time of year to enjoy our wonderful trails than the fall. Please join us. We will meet at Forest Park Nature Center and plan to do the long trail around to the back of the park including Wake Robin Trail. There are a few challenging hills that many of us are very familiar with. The weather should be early fall. So, it's possible that you may need a warm layer as dark approaches. Hike Leader: Brian Cunningham, (C) Event , Saturday, Sept. 22, 1:30 PM, McNaughton Park, Pekin A hike in McNaughton Park is a great way to celebrate the beginning of fall. The Park consists of 700 acres of woodland and meadow, bordered by Route 98 on the north, Sheridan Road on the south, McNaughton Park Road on the east and Parkway Drive on the west. My recollection is that the trails range from moderately easy to moderately strenuous, but mostly the former. We will walk the Potawatomi Trail which is 7 miles long and should take us about 4 hours. Just in time for the group to select a location to have a hearty supper. Looking forward to seeing a great turn out for this event! Hike Leader: Mark E. Klokkenga, Event , Wednesday, Oct. 3, 5:30 PM, Pimiteoui Trail - Forest Park to Grandview Drive A perfect hike for mid-week exercise! We will meet in the Forest Park Nature Center s parking lot to hike our club s namesake. We will cross Forest Park Drive, follow the Pimiteoui Trail up to Grandview Drive, enjoy the view of the Fat Lake, and then retrace our steps down. The total hike is only 2.3 miles; however, there is 235 difference in elevation from bottom to top. The trail itself is a pleasant roller coaster and includes a panoramic ridge line view of Grandview Drive. Estimated duration is 1-1/2 hours or less at a slow-to-moderate pace and allowing time to enjoy the view from the top. Difficulty level: moderate due to elevation changes, roots and rocks. Hike Leader: Susan Hood, Event , Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, 5:00 PM, Bike Ride, River Trail of Illinois Let's meet for a short bike ride on the River Trail of IL between E. Peoria and Morton. We will meet at the Fondulac Park District headquarters on the corner of E. Washington St. and Veterans (where the caboose is) in East Peoria. The ride will be about 10 miles round trip. We will leave promptly at 5:00 PM due to waning daylight, so be there a little early.. We don't want to be caught in the dark! Ride Leader: Bonnie Jackson, (H) or (C) Event Wednesday, Oct. 17, 5:30 PM, Northwoods Park, Morton Remember when it was so hot we begged for cooler weather? Join us and enjoy a cooler 2 mile hike in Morton among the falling leaves. Bring hiking poles even though this is an easy hike and mostly 2
flat. There are a few small hills. No rocks or rugged tree roots. Dress warmly. We will dine after the hike at TNT's on Route150 (Meadows Ave.) in East Peoria Directions: Drive North on Main Street in Morton; cross Lakeland; cross railroad tracks and when you come to a bend in the road turn right into Northwood Park. Drive into the park all the way and we will meet in the big parking lot. Hike Leader: Linda Kent, or Event , Saturday, Oct. 20, 10:00 AM, Lake Shore Path, Lake Geneva, WI We have scheduled a wonderful "road-trip" to Lake Geneva, WI to hike the Geneva Lake Shore Path. Please join us on this hike. It should be a beautiful fall day for this "must-do" hike. We plan to hike about 12 miles of this flat, easy but very scenic public trail that encircles Lake Geneva. Although the trail is open to the public the properties it crosses are private. The perimeter of the lake is surrounded by stately mansions so we will "Walk, Talk and Gawk" and then dine at a restaurant on the far side of the lake. This is definitely not a trail that should be rushed; the hike should take about 4 hours. A few items to know for this hike; it will be Oct 20th so you should dress accordingly. Also, there are no facilities whatsoever for water, snacks or toilets on the first 7 miles of the path or in-between other major points on the path. Hikers may choose to travel up the night before or on the morning of the hike. For those staying overnight, a reasonably priced place to stay is the Harbor Shores on Lake Geneva. They currently have 17 rooms remaining for Friday night and only 3 for Saturday. So, if you want a room you must act fast. Their rooms are $99 - $119 for Friday night. Their phone number is and their website is: You may also choose to stay at another hotel of your choosing. For those driving up on Saturday morning, Lake Geneva is an easy 200 mile (3.5 hour) drive from Peoria. There will be a car pool meeting at 6:00 AM in Morton at the Cracker Barrel (rear parking lot). Hikers should be home between 9 and 10 PM Saturday night. If you plan on attending this hike please call Brian Cunningham at to let him know your intent. This will assist in car pooling for both Friday evening and Saturday morning. Hike Leader: Brian Cunningham, (C) Event , Saturday, Oct. 27, 6:00 PM, Halloween Costume Party & Potluck Help John and Bonnie Jackson break in their new patio and join them for a costume party to celebrate Halloween! Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. The party starts at 6:00 P.M., right at sundown. Bonnie and John will provide chili, hot dogs, drinks, plates & forks. Bring a dish to share. Their address is 15 Waldheim Rd., Morton, IL. Take I-74 to the Morton North exit. Go approximately 1 mile from the ramp to Waldheim Rd. As you approach Waldheim, you will see a huge stone sign on your right that says "Waldheim." It sits at the edge of their yard. Turn right onto Waldheim, and theirs is the first house to your left. It's the one with the big witches in the yard! Please RSVP by Thursday, October 25th to bon1jon2@yahoo.com or Hosts: Bonnie and John Jackson, (H) or (C) Event , Saturday, Nov. 3, 8:00 AM, Carpenter State Park, Springfield Let's travel to a newer (for the Pimiteoui Trail Club, anyway) and accessible hiking destination (last visited in 2010), owned by the Springfield Park District (SPD) and located about 3 miles north of our state's capital city, just off Business 55. This park is listed as having 10 interconnecting trails, with 4.5 miles of hiking trail that run through intermittent streams and floodplain forests, dominated by large sycamores, silver maples, and box elders trees, adjacent to the Sangamon River. There are also small seeps and sandstone outcrops to be found. The park consists of 434 acres and is surrounded by two other parks, Gurgens and Riverside, which the SPD also manages. We may get time to explore these other parks, depending on the time we have available and what the group decides it wants to do. It should be interesting to see if the fall colors are at their peak or just beyond for this 3
particular time of the year. Regardless of the extent of the beauty of the fall colors, it will be great to get out of town and see some new scenery. Let s meet at the Cracker Barrel in Morton for car pooling. Hike Leader: Mark E. Klokkenga, Event , Saturday, Nov. 10, 8:30 AM, Merwin Preserve near Lexington, IL Let's once again enjoy hiking at beautiful Merwin Nature Preserve between Lexington and Lake Bloomington. Combining forest and savannas, Merwin provides excellent scenery, such as overlooks of the Mackinaw River which bisects the preserve. We will start at the south gate, walk that portion, and then drive to the west gate to complete our hike. Difficulty is moderate with some rolling hills. There are no bathroom facilities or drinking water available. Dogs are not encouraged, but I've seen some there. Bring water and a hiking stick. We'll carpool from behind Cracker Barrel in Morton at 8:30 and make a bathroom stop on route if needed. Those driving directly should contact the hike leader beforehand. We will dine nearby afterward. We should return to Morton before 3:30. Hike Leader: Jay Meinrich, ; jmeinrich@comcast.net Event , Nov. 18, Sunday, 1:00 PM, Camp Wokanda. Mossville, It has been quite a few years since we have hiked the trails within Camp Wokanda. Time to revisit the woods and hills of this nearby valley. Hopefully some autumn prairie plants will still be in bloom. This hike is considered moderate to strenuous because it includes both gently rolling hills and a couple of steep climbs. Recent trail improvements include new bridges, steps and handrails in some areas. Directions: From Peoria, take Rt. 29 north (Galena Rd.). Turn left onto Old Galena Rd. just north of Rt. 6 (look for the brown Camp Wokanda sign). Follow this past Mossville Grade School, then turn left onto Boy Scout Rd. and proceed to the park entrance (arch over road). Continue past the lake and the lodge on the right; keep going. Park in the large lot next to the restrooms. Hike Leader: Cindy Alexander, Event , December 2, Sunday, 2:00 PM, Peoria Riverfront (Riverplex) Don't let the cold weather or Christmas preparations keep you indoors! Don your wooly socks and come hike with us on the Pimiteoui Trail along the Peoria Riverfront. Meet inside the front doors of the Riverplex. Our route will be 3 or 4 miles depending on the weather and afterwards we can stop for an early dinner at a local restaurant. Hike Leader: Mike Bohn, Event Dec. 7, Friday, 6:00 PM, Forest Park Nature Center, Holiday Shop-N- Stroll, 5809 Forest Park Drive, Peoria Heights Prepare to bundle up! We will be walking outdoors along a beautiful candlelit trail! We will meet just inside the main door of Forest Park Nature Center at 6:00 PM. When the group is ready, we will walk along the candle-lit trail leading to an oh-so-welcome campfire and hot chocolate. Anyone can follow the luminaries back to the Nature Center at any time to warm up, listen to live music, shop, nibble on cookies and hot drinks and just enjoy one another s company. Hours for the Holiday Shop-N-Stroll are 6-8 PM. Do you hear what I hear.? It is likely that a second location will be announced for those who would like to continue the Holiday Cheer later into the evening. Event Coordinator: Susan Hood, December 9, Sunday, 5:00 pm, Board Meeting, Embassy Suites, E. Peoria You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go... - Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go! Come to this meeting to share your ideas about hiking locations, social and service events, and club business. Volunteer to lead a hike! Our schedule for January thru April, 2013 will be created at this meeting. If you are unable to attend, pass your ideas - and willingness to volunteer - on to a Board Member before the meeting. Coordinator: Susan Hood,
BIKING OPPORTUNITY September 8, Saturday, 1:00 PM, Detweiller Marina, Peoria George and Sandi Burrier will lead a bike trip from the Detweiller Marina, which is at the foot of Caroline Street in Peoria. Please park at the south end of the parking lot away from the boat launch area. We will ride the Pimiteoui Riverfront Trail north to Perry Street, ride through Springdale Cemetery and meet the newly named Peoria Park District Rock Island Greenway at Peoria Heights Library on Glen Avenue. When we reach Pioneer Parkway, we will turn around and return to the riverfront through the cemetery. The trip will be about 21 miles and a few hills will be encountered. We will picnic at about 4:00 PM at Detweiller Marina. We will provide charcoal and you are to provide meat (if you choose) to cook, a dish to pass, beverage and table service. Leaders: Sandi and George Burrier, (H) or (C) EVENT REPORTS Event , May 5, Saturday, 9:00 am, Singing Woods This first Saturday in May turned out to a beautiful day for a hike anywhere in the Peoria area, and this was especially was true for Singing Woods. Everything went as planned for the 8 "thrill seekers" on the first half of the hike. The second half was kind of a different story, however. Singing Woods is 900 acres of Illinois Nature Preserve, owned and managed by the Peoria Park District, and has no designated trails, which makes for some very tricky way finding. Anyway, the group started out by enjoying the White Oak Savanna, proceeded down the hill and across the ravine and then climbed the hill on the other side of the ravine, and started walking in the direction they thought was going back toward their cars. After seeing the same landmarks several times they realized that they were not where they thought they were, and were going in the wrong direction. Using Brian's GPS, as well as several peoples "in born" compasses, the group eventually, got back to the road safely, albeit, a lot further south than they thought they would be. At least it was fairly early in the spring, so it was not all that difficult to travel across the slopes, within the Nature Preserve. And our objective was achieved as everyone seemed to have a great time, regardless of getting partially lost. Attendees: Mareike Kraatz, Eric Hutchison, Paul Hodge Cindy Alexander, Brian Cunningham, Daniel J. Hoefing, and Tom Hieser (guest) Hike Leader: Mark Klokkenga May 12 19, Smoky Mountain Adventure Thirteen members enjoyed hiking the beautiful mountain trails in Smokey Mountain National Park, Tennessee. We now have bragging rights of hiking the Appalachian Trail. We hiked in rain, sun and through babbling creeks. We climbed over roots and boulders. We forged up for miles and stumbled down for miles. We hiked about 30 miles in 6 days. Trails were rugged and moderate. We hiked Gatlinburg Trail, Abrams Falls in Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome (highest peak in the park at 6,643 feet), Appalachian Trail (the most famous and most traveled in U.S.), Cucumber Trail and the River Walk in Pigeon Forge. Some of the great sightings: bear with babies in trees, coyote in brush, and huge wild turkeys along the road, deer and wild horses running in a meadow, a big fat snake along the rocks, and a very rare sighting of a pileated Woodpecker foraging around a tree. Could it have gotten any better? We had a group camp fire cook out of wieners and chili did a little shopping and rode Go Karts. We did it all. Words cannot explain the beauty, the magnificence and the spirituality we felt as we hiked Smokey Mountain National Park. All we can say. GO! Attendees: Cindy & Rob Alexander, Joyce & Jerry Gegel, Bonnie, & John Jackson, Linda & Sam Kent, Brenda &Larry Shay, Chris Sweet, Susan Hood and Laura Van Riper were equally overwhelmed by this experience. Event Coordinators: Linda and Sam Kent 5
Event , June 2, Saturday, 9 am, Black Partridge Unlike the previous Saturday which was hot and sweaty, June 2 was overcast and comfortably cool -- a perfect day for hiking the trails at Black Partridge Park in Metamora in celebration of National Trails Day. Fourteen hikers entered the woods and followed the well-marked trail down to the creek. After crossing the creek several times on plank bridges, we ascended to the top of the bluff and made a wiggly loop before returning to the creek again. Heading north we completed our 4-mile circuitous route at the picnic pavilion near our parked cars. Here we stopped for some yummy treats as we all eagerly awaited our name to be drawn for a Trails Day prize. Prizes included day packs, bug spray, headlamp, t-shirts, and more! Those who still had room for lunch proceeded to Michael's in Germantown Hills for sub sandwiches. Thanks to all for making it a fun day. Attendees: Rob Alexander, Linda Kent, George Burrier, Sandi Burrier, Jerry Gegel, Brian Cunningham, Laura Van Riper, Susan Hood, Kathy Simms, Chris Sweet, Tom Hieser, Paula Lewis, Paul Peterson Hike leader: Cindy Alexander Event , June 16, Comlara Park, Hudson, IL Ten hikers came out to hike the trails around Lake Evergreen. The weather was warm with a light breeze, and sunny. The hike was approximately four miles. After the hike Saturday we went to the Lakeside Inn for a meal. Several of the crew camped at the park Friday and Saturday nights. The campers also did some bicycling and kayaking, grilled up some food, and told campfire stories. Attendees: Rob and Cindy Alexander, Sam and Linda Kent, Paula Lewis, Chris Sweet, Phil Schmuck, Dave Grebner, and Mark Klokkenga. Hike Leaders: John and Bonnie Jackson June 23, Saturday, 9 am, Multi Sport Extravaganza The second annual Multi Sport Extravaganza at Wildlife Prairie Park proved to be a fun and busy day for outdoor enthusiasts. Events included hiking, bicycling, trail running, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking and yoga, plus a free massage. A special thanks to the volunteers who helped assemble and man the Pimiteoui information booth, lead hikes, and provided shuttle transportation: Cindy Alexander, Linda Kent, Brian Cunningham, and Mark Klokkenga. Other Pimiteoui members who were present at the event as volunteers or participants: Rob Alexander, Roger John, Susan Hood, and Tom Heiser. Pimiteoui coordinators: Cindy Alexander, Brian Cunningham, Linda Kent & Mark Klokkenga Event , July 8, Sunday, 2:00 PM, Dirksen Park, Pekin, IL Fifteen hikers enjoyed walking through the shaded woods on this sultry afternoon. We followed the Running Deer Trail for a little less than 1-1/2 hours and, true to its name, we spotted running deer. Afterwards, about one-half of the group quenched their thirst at the Burger Barge in East Peoria. Attendees: Paul Hodge, John Jackson, Bonnie Jackson, Brian Cunningham, Linda Kent, Sam Kent, Kathy Simms, Sharon Obery, Cindy Alexander, Dave Grebner, Aurea Toxqui, Tom Horstmann, Nancy Horstmann, and our guest Rob Shields Hike Leader: Susan Hood Event , July 15, Sunday, 4:00 PM, Summer Social (Cookout) Twenty five members attended the annual club picnic. Although it was a warm evening, a breeze from the lake made dinner an enjoyable event. After dinner, many of us pulled up lawn chairs to chat and watch the children splash in the swimming area of the lake. Event Coordinators: Sam and Linda Kent Event , July 28, Saturday, 8:30 am, Hennepin Canal State Park The weather was very pleasant for the hike along the old canal trail. We hiked the interesting historic section of the trail and learned about the old locks, the aqua furs and the first sliding bridge. Attendees: Sam & Linda Kent; Eric Hutchison; Mareike Kraatz; Cindy & Rob Alexander; Brian 6
Cunningham; Susan Hood; Kathy Simms; Roger & Kathy John; Bonnie & John Jackson and two teen age guests Brie and Chase Howerton. Hike Leaders: Sam and Linda Kent Event , August 11, Saturday, 8:00 am, Matthiessen State Park, Utica, IL Nineteen people showed up to hike and tour one of the best kept "secret" parks in the state. It is still amazing to me how many people have been to Starved Rock State Park and have not heard of, or taken the time to go to Starved Rock's sister park, Matthiessen. After assembling in the parking lot, the group descended the stairs into the Upper Dells Canyon. We took the time to enjoy looking at Giant's Bathtub, and the exposed sandstone walls, as we hiked and socialized with each other. Next, the group climbed out of the Upper Dells on that canyon's north end, and walked the rim trail crossing the bridge between the lakes. The group then again descended, this time into the the Lower Dells area. This is the area that is probably the most fascinating, as one get the feeling of being deep within a canyon, with walls that are in the range of at least feet tall. (I am taking an educated guess at this). It was here the group stopped to linger, walking thru the caves and caverns that have been formed by years and years of erosion and other natural forces, and hang out by the lake that has been formed in the lowest area next to the canyon walls. Even though there is not enough time to go on a more aggressive hike after going on the walking tour of the bluffs and canyons of Matthiessen State Park, one comes away with a sensation of being amazed by the natural beauty and uniqueness of this fascinating, one of a kind creation. The group choose to dine at Duffy s or McDuffy's (forgot which), a great Irish restaurant in nearby Utica, to absorb some of the culture of a community that is taking advantage of the tourism that comes to the area.. Attendees: Eric Hutchinson, Mareike Kraatz, Susan Hood, John Jackson, Linda Kent, Kathy Simms, Laura VanRiper, Tom Hieser, Jay Meinrich, Karen Grano, Sharron Baird, Phil Schmiser, Paula Lewis, George Burrier, Sandi Burrier, Sandee Wedekind (guest), Jim Wedekind (guest), and Frank Herdemann (guest) Hike Leader: Mark Klokkenga Event , August 19, Sunday, 2:00 pm, Robinson South Originally, this hike was scheduled for Robinson Park North. However, the amount of vegetation growth over the trail and the amount of poison ivy necessitated a venue change to Robinson Park South. The scorching summer which resulted in too many 100+ days during July subsided for our hike and the temperature was pleasant. As always the hills were challenging while also invigorating. The view from the peak overlooking Route 6 is the south end of the trail currently. However, there are future plans for it to be connected to the south side of Route 6 through the tunnel underneath of it. We returned on the out-and-back trail for a total of 4 heart healthy miles. Afterwards we attempted to gain nutrition and hydration at the new Sazani s Restaurant (formerly Jill s on Galena Road). Their overflowing attendance changed our minds and we diverted to the former Fire House Pizza on Galena Road which is now the No Wake Zone. Attendees: Douglas Lais, Cindy Alexander, Chris Sweet, John Jackson, Chris Golden, Jay Meinrich, Sandi Burrier, George Burrier, Shelia Gribble, Susan Hood, Laura Van Riper, Sharron Baird, Dave Grebner, Paula Lewis and Tammy Arends(guest).
