2 Glacier National Park Glacier National Park is located in the northwest corner of Montana and extends into Canada. It is located in the Rocky Mountains, approximately 1,000-3,000 meters above sea level, includes a variety of plants and animals not seen elsewhere on the planet and contains 140 Species of special concern. The park is dominated by an environmental theme. Its greatest concern is preserving and improving the landscape for the plants and animals that call the land home. The park is influenced on the western side of the mountains by wet ocean air and on east side by cold, dry Canadian air. Even small changes in elevation or location can determine where specific plants and animals will live. Glacier also contains an abundance of water features including lakes, glaciers, snow, streams and waterfalls. Snowfall on Going-to-the-Sun Road can exceed 60 feet by spring. Glacier s climate is regarded as fickle because it can vary as much as 100 degrees in a day or 30 degrees in a matter of minutes. In the summer temperatures can reach close to 100 degrees during the day and yet drop to 25 degrees at night. Snow can be expected in any month but falls most heavily in the winter. In October and November, snow has already begun to fall and more can be expected as the season continues. Glacier offers visitors up-to-date information on road closings and hiking trails so visitors can accurately prepare for their visit. There is a multitude of activities and sights to see in Glacier National Park. Visitors can go camping, fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking, snowshoeing, snowboarding, bicycling, and even through the park. One trail that is particularly inviting is the Numa Lookout Trail. This trail features a lookout tower at the end of the 4.9 trail a reward for any hiker after a long journey through the wilderness. Be careful when venturing on this trail, even in the early fall there could be generous amounts of snow necessitating a compass, GPS or map of the area. Bears are also active this time of year so one must take precautions to avoid being attacked. After hiking on the trail, a weary traveler may need a place to rest. Bowman Lake Campground provides a place to shelter for the night but it is primitive in October so don t expect a shower, flush toilet or running water. Do anticipate beautiful vistas and peaceful solitude, including an amazing star-filled sky. In addition to a secure tent, travelers will need a below-zero sleeping bag, as temperatures often dip into the teens this time of year.
