Year 8 Outdoor Education Lake Moogerah - Camp Laurence Student Information Session
Location Camp Laurence is situated on the shores of Lake Moogerah, about one and a half hours drive from the Gold Coast.
Outdoor Education Outdoor Education - provides opportunities for students to experience adventure, healthy risk taking, challenges and leadership opportunities. Lake Moogerah offers a beautiful environment, which rewards students with breath-taking views, amazing wildlife and bird watching.
Outdoor Education experiences make a positive difference to young people s lives by: building self-concept and resilience improving ability to connect with others developing leadership skills building a sense of community
Benefits of OE A Sense of Belonging and Community Personal Engagement An increased level of skill + increased level of fitness. Environmental Engagement A feeling of being connected to and fostering a love for the environment. Personal Growth A sense of achievement and growth. - self confidence - independence - positive attitude Insight on how to be a more effective member of a team. - respect for individual differences - communication skills - leadership skills
Challenge We recognise that each student is different unique strengths, skills and experience. Challenge by choice: To try everything To care for each other s safety To support and encourage each other to achieve personal goals To take responsible risks
Be Your Best Developing leadership skills starts with selfawareness, taking responsibility and leading yourself.
OE STAFFING Edmund Park Adventure Education is the provider who will lead the Outdoor Education Program at Camp Laurence This company is highly accredited The School has had a successful working relationship with previous programs Instructors are trained in remote wilderness first aid
St Hilda s Staffing Mrs Bev George(Base Camp) Mr Ben Andrews Ms Jenny Mahon Mr Jaron Winter Mrs Michelle Greening Mrs Shelley Cross Mrs Amanda Rigby Ms Alicia Saigo Fr Andrew Schmidt
Camp Laurence The program has been designed to build upon the skills that students would have gained in Year 7 at Hidden Creek, while preparing them for Year 9 at Cooloola National Park where they will undertake an extended expedition.
Activities Camping Bushwalking Canoeing Low and High ropes Initiative games Mountain biking
Safety Activities are lead by experienced professionals All activities are undertaken with current weather conditions in mind Students are always under supervision by OE and St Hilda s staff Staff will carry a first aid kit. Staff are in radio contact Students wear a hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes Students are briefed about the potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures in every activity
Camping Base camp: 2 nights Expedition: 1 night Involves erecting tents for sleeping shelter Using trangias for food preparation Toilets and showers are at the base camp
Bushwalking Students stay together and keep to designated tracks Students carry their own gear The program involves a half a day walk
Canoeing Lake Moogerah is an outstanding environment to explore by canoe. Students will be given a lesson in canoeing and water safety Students are expected to carry their packs containing their belongings in the canoe with them Prevailing weather conditions are considered and if inappropriate the activity will be modified
Low Ropes Series of rope/cable, pole, tyre and plank fixtures joined together which the students negotiate using balance from start to finish under the supervision of trained staff The low ropes course is close to the ground, so if a student loses their balance they just step back down to the ground Each section of the course will involve students using strategies in how to move their body to best negotiate the course
High Ropes The high ropes course is set in the air, and a student is harnessed to the cables, so if they lose their balance they remain close to the cable and can reposition themselves to continue All participants work as a team helping each other
