1 San Jacinto Region Vintage Chevrolet Club of America February, 2017 Volume 28 Issue 2 Monthly Meeting The February meeting will be held at the Shrimp and Stuff restaurant at 11:00 AM Saturday February 11, 2017 at 3901 Avenue O (39 th ST. & Ave O), Galveston, TX. We will have a short meeting as well as eat before we visit the Bryan Museum and Moody Mansion, Galveston. See notice later in this edition for more information. For most of you travel to Galveston on I-45. Cross over the causeway onto Broadway. Just after the large group of cemeteries will be 39 th street. Take a right and proceed to Ave. O and turn right. There is a large parking lot on the left next to the restaurant. Director s Corner Hey everyone, our first club meeting of the year is past, and we are off and running into this new year. Our first order of business was a Board Meeting hosted at Bryan and Trish Felt s home on January 14 th. At the meeting the board discussed several issues, a couple of new positions were added, Bob Couch as parliamentarian and Ann Rasch as our Sunshine Lady. Both have agreed to their appointments. Malcolm Crawford has also agreed to look into obtaining our own web site. We thank them for taking on these new tasks. Another major item for discussion was our upcoming 28 th Annual Swap Meet that is held at Trader s Village. Chip Sweet has arranged a meeting with the Trader s Village folks that will take place Friday, January 27 th, at Trader s Village. There are several items the board wishes to discuss with them about improving our Swap Meet. We have vendors already signing up for spaces, so keep the weekend of March open on your calendar. Volunteers will be needed in a lot of positions. By the way, the pay is Great!! I want to thank Bryan for arranging the tour at the Historic Glenwood Cemetery. The tour was very interesting and informative about some of the Old Houston Elite. Afterwards, we all met at Chatter s for lunch and also held our monthly meeting there. I can t wait to see what is lined up for next time. Well, I guess it is time to go back to work on Klinker Bell (our 28 Sedan). I am in the process of changing out the clutch and overhauling the transmission in preparation for this year s Mid America Tour in Indiana. Meanwhile, our 53 is patiently waiting it s turn in line. You never know what you are going to find when working on these old cars. Boy what fun!! Hope to see you down the road. Ray

2 Minutes of the January 14, 2017 Meeting Secretary s Report Ray Pierson, Director of the San Jacinto Region VCCA, called the meeting to order. He thanked Bryan & Trish Felt for organizing the tour of the historic Glenwood Cemetery and Brunch at Chatters Café, located nearby. He also welcomed our newest Region member, Bob Niles, who owns a 1964 SS. He thanked and introduced Bob Couch who volunteered to serve as Parliamentarian, and Ann Rasch who agreed to serve as Sunshine Lady. Old Business, Secretary, Sheila Bradford, did not submit minutes from the Christmas Party, so there wasn t any report. Treasurer, Chip Sweet, said there wasn t much of anything new to report. After a motion by Bill Bradford and a second by Bryan Felt, the Treasurer s Report was approved. Carolyn Couch, Membership Chair, said we now have 46 paid members. She sent out 30 letters and s after the Christmas Party and about ½ of these groups have responded. New Business, Ray said we had a lengthy discussion on the Swap Meet at our recent Board of Directors Meeting at the Felt s home. Traders Village is concerned we might not want to continue, but plans are well underway and the next step is to meet with them. Carolyn Pierson, Swap Meet Registrar, has 189 spaces paid for and 32 spaces penciled in. She also sent out 200 flyers just last week and encouraged everyone to take some flyers to distribute to auto parts stores in their communities. A motion to continue to host the Trader s Village Swap Meet was made, seconded and approved by members attending the meeting. Bryan Felt, Activities Chair, mentioned upcoming meetings (Feb. Bryan Museum in Galveston?, March at Traders Village, May Fish Fry in Onalaska). VCCA Tours: Southern Spring Tour, 20 th Anniversary in Oklahoma. To register contact Bill Bradford. Mid-America 4 Cyl. Tour in southern Indiana. To register, contact Harry Gigous. The Area 6 Joint Tour will be in September and will be hosted by the Lone Star Region. Plans are getting underway for the Southern Fall Tour to be located near Stephenville, TX in mid to late October. Meet at the Shrimp and Stuff restaurant at 11:00 AM at 3901 Avenue O (39 th ST. & Ave O) for lunch then on to the Bryan Museum at st Street to experience the past through their vast exhibits of history of both Texas and the American West. Then motor to the Moody Mansion at 2618 Broadway to tour one of the most magnificent homes on Broadway that was occupied by one of the most prominent families in Galveston and Texas. The Bryan Museum, located in the historic Galveston Orphans Home, houses The Bryan Collection, one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. Assembled by J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan, the collection spans more than 12,000 years, with pieces ranging from ancient Native American cultural artifacts to modern twenty-first century objects. With approximately 70,000 items in total, the collection includes 20,000 rare books; more than 30,000 documents in Spanish, German, French, and English; three dozen saddles; over 250 antique firearms; several hundred spurs; a large collection of fine art, religious art, folk art, and portraits; exceedingly rare maps and artifacts, such as "cowboy" chaps; Native American stone tools and arrowheads; and a Spanish mission bell. The Bryan Museum presents a chronological history of Texas and the American West with a special emphasis on the Spanish influences in the region. In addition to its permanent galleries, the Museum also includes space for rotating special exhibits, a library, and an archive. Page 3

4 The Moody Mansion Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 squarefoot, four-story structure was completed in Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. W.L Moody Jr. bought the home from the heirs of the original owners soon after the great hurricane of Mr. and Mrs. Moody and their four children celebrated the first of more than eighty Christmas seasons in the house in December of that year. The house remained home for Moody family members until Today, its rooms are filled with the furnishings and personal effects of the family. The philanthropic legacy of the Moody family of Galveston is carried on today by the Moody Foundation and the Mary Moody Northen Endowment. Both charitable foundations are major forces in health care, education, historic preservation, and the arts. To make your visit more pleasurable, we suggest bringing a sweater. Bags, purses, backpacks, and umbrellas are not allowed in the galleries and must be checked in at the front desk upon arrival. Firearms and knives are strictly prohibited. Photography inside the Museum is not permitted. Pets are not allowed in the galleries. (Assistive animals, such as guide dogs for the blind, are welcome.) Please do not touch works of art or artifacts. Food, beverages, candy, and chewing gum are not permitted in the galleries. Smoking is prohibited. Page 4
