The Valve Clad-d-der San Jacinto Region Vintage Chevrolet Club of America May 2012 Volume 23 Issue 6 Director: Bryan Felt (832) b.felt@sbcglobal.net Secretary: Sheila Bradford (281) sheilabradford@swbell.net Treasurer: Chip Sweet (979) sweet.chip@yahoo.com Membership: Cathy Sweet (979) catherinesweet@ymail.com Activities: Bill Bradford (281) wtb@swbell.net Editor: Phil McGraw (979) pwmcgraw@swbell.net Sweet s for hosting this annual event. It is always enjoyed by all. Please mark your calendars for the upcoming events..the Spring BBQ and car show at Billy Kelly s and Donna Hines place and the day tour in June to the San Jacinto Monument and feast at the Monument Inn. MONTHLY CLUB MEETING First Monday Night except as noted 6PM Eat and socialize 7:30 Meeting The May meeting will be May 19 th at Bill Kelley and Donna Hines estate Beinhorn, Houston, This will also be our monthly meeting. Members are encouraged to bring a dessert or special salad. Directors Corner We have all enjoyed the warmer than normal spring weather with all the beautiful green growth, colorful flowers, life that has been awakened in natures living plants that endured last year s drought. With all this beauty of springs promise, attention has been focused not only on our yards and homes, but also on our vintage Chevrolets. On the heels of a successful Swap Meet there was a healthy group of members and guests who journeyed out to Burton, Texas to participate in the Cotton Gin Festival parade and Barn party following at the Bradford s Barn just outside of Burton. There was a bevy of really, really nice Chevrolets, their owners with healthy appetites for grilled Burton Sausage and wonderful sides and desserts furnished by all who attended. We had a nice meeting after devouring all the great food. I would like to thank the Bradford s and the 1 Does anyone of our members remember Bob Kiefer? He was a member of our club for many, many years. Debbie Boyer got a call from him and referred him to me and Bob was cleaning out his shop and has donated his 32 year collection of Generator and Distributor magazines to the club. They range from the 60 s into the 90 s. I can arrange to bring them to events or if you would like to look them over, just contact me and we will make sure you get to see them. They are for all to enjoy. Many thanks to Bob Kiefer for his generous gift to the club. I look forward to seeing and visiting with you all at the upcoming Spring BBQ and car show in May. Happy and safe Chevy motoring! I hope to see you on the right side of the road. Bryan Felt, Director Secretary s Report Minutes of the April 21, 2012 Meeting After enjoying a cookout of Burton Sausages, side dishes, salads and desserts, including 4 kinds of Blue Bell Ice Cream, we settled down for our San Jacinto Region s monthly meeting. Director, Bryan Felt welcomed everyone to our annual Barn Party. He thanked everyone who participated by driving their vintage Chevys in the Burton Cotton Gin Parade and everyone who helped shop and clean the Bradford s barn in preparation for the party.

First, the Minutes of the last meeting (at Trader s Village) were approved unanimously as written. Second, Debbie Boyer presented her report on Swap Meet Bryan recognized Debbie, the Boyer Family, and others for their amazing service planning and executing this huge project for us. Trader s Village reported a Saturday attendance record of 49,000 persons. All spaces were sold except for 38 on the grass. More spaces were sold on Sunday. Here s a brief summary of comments made about the Swap Meet: (1) Recruitment must begin earlier for all volunteer positions, including Sunday when more volunteers are needed. Debbie and her crew can t do it all. Safety Vests for those working front and back gates was a super idea. (2) Volunteers need to work, not just come to the Swap Meet to take advantage of the delicious Bar-B-Que. (3) Vendor Relations, James Blanton (Chair), was excellent and need to be expanded. Talking with each vendor may have been responsible for a much larger and better than ever Nacho Party Sat. Night. (4) More coordination with Trader s Village. The new road on the south side of the property worked wonders. Unfortunately, the situation with the porta-potties was frustrating to say the least. Also, the security officers provided by Trader s Village never seem to arrive early enough. To conclude, Chip Sweet moved that we compensate the Registrar (Debbie Boyer) $1 per space and James Blanton seconded the motion; the motion was unanimously approved. Third, Debbie presented a report from Gary Groschke who was unable to attend this meeting on our AutoRama project over Thanksgiving Weekend. Gary needs about $2000 to revamp our display and improve the appearance and functionality of the barrier around the display vehicles that defines our space. After a brief discussion, Larry Blanton moved and Bill Bradford seconded a motion to have the Treasurer issue a check for $2000, which was unanimously approved. Fourth, Chip reported a positive balance in the accounts. We have 4 new members, for a total of 2 60 paid members. Club rosters will be available at our May meeting (Memorial Barbeque). As part of the discussion of finances, James asked all of us to be aware if anyone is hard pressed financially to attend an event to let him know. Fifth, Bill reported on Activities. The Mid-America Four Cylinder Tour (this year held in the Natchitoches, LA area) was extremely successful and well attended. Attending from our Region were Bill & Sheila Bradford, Bob & Carolyn Couch, Bill & Barbera Mancuso, Phil McGraw, Hugh & Euna Murray, Clay & Judy Perrine, Chip & Cathy Sweet, and Hans & Ann Rasch. The next tour will be the 15 th Southern Spring Tour in the St. Louis Area May A tour to the tour is being organized. Sixth, Clay Perrine (VCCA Area Director) gave a brief report on the National Board Meeting held this spring in Medford, Oregon. The number of Board members was reduced from 18 to 14 when the At-Large positions were eliminated. Clay reported that Medford will be a good location for the next Anniversary Meet, and we should expect a greater emphasis than usual on touring. Clay has served us for 6 years on the National VCCA Board and will roll off this year. Please contact him if you are possibly interested in serving in this position or want more information. To conclude our meeting, James & Marcia Thomas names were drawn for the Attendance Award but they were not present to win. Our next meeting will be held at the Memorial Bar-B- Que at the home of Billy Kelly and Donna Hines on Saturday, May 16 th. Attendance at the Burton Meeting: Bill & Barbera Mancuso, Clay & Judy Perrine, Ron & Linda Holter, Larry & Donna Blanton, James Blanton, Dave & Joyce French, Bryan & Trish Felt, Jerry W. Bingham, David O Mara, Brad & Debbie Boyer, Chip & Cathy Sweet, Bob & Carolyn Couch, Bill & Sheila Bradford, Hugh & Euna Murray. Respectfully Submitted, Sheila Bradford (Region Secretary)

2 nd Mid-America pre-29 Chevrolet Tour (Photos by Karen Mann, Lynda Reiter and Phil McGraw.) 20 Four Bangers from 9 states rolling thru LA Natchitoches (pronounced Nak a tish by the natives), the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase Territory, is steeped in culture, history and southern hospitality. Feeding time! One guy lost his feeding wire to a big un. He s the guy on the right counting his fingers.. Pizza party night and a lightning storm to remember. A wet and cold Tuesday led us to The tour began with a scenic drive through old growth piney hills and hardwood bottoms of the Kisatchie National Forest of Western Louisiana. The sort of day our 4 bangers were made for. Lunch with the Alligators at the Bayou Pierre Alligator Park included eating alligator Ka-bobs and alligator meat pies Off the table boys! Dinner time! Wet, cold, and happy Fort Jesup State Historic Site, an early US frontier complex. At its peak it had 15,000 troops and 3 artillery batteries. As the editor understands it, the US would protect the Texicans east of the Neches river boundary from Mexico. The Texicans lobbied for a Brazos river boundary but the New England states did not want another slave state. So the southern and western boundary was set at the Rio Grande and the nation of Texas stretched from the Rio Grande to Montana and on the east to the Louisiana Purchase. Fact or fiction, south of the border means Rio Grande. 3

No one sent pictures of Hodges Gardens State Park, 700 acres of natural and cultivated beauty of western La. The tour was escorted through Many, LA by (almost) the entire police department. Men doffed their hats as is the custom in deep east Texas when the 20 black touring car of Rick and Karen Mann passed. One old man was overheard who died? The other old man replied don no but musta been real short. We then traveled to Rebel State Historic Site, with the grave of an unknown Confederate Soldier and the Country Music Museum. Overseer s House at Oakland Plantation We ended the day at the Adai Caddo Indian Nation Cultural Center with Indian dancers. Main House at Oakland Plantation Wednesday was plantation day with visits to historic plantations displaying their opulence and agricultural operations that played a major role in Southern settlement and society. Plantation Store 4

Slave Quarter at Magnolia Plantation St. Augustine Church The tour ended with a day spent exploring Old Toen Natchitoches. We visited the Kaffie- Frederick General Mercantile Store which opened in It s here somewhere if you can find it! Forge at Magnolia Plantation Tom Frederick, great-great-grandson, gave an antidotal history of the town. The Cane River that flows through town was once the Red River and Natchitoches a busy shipping point. When Coronel Shreve, of Shreveport, LA fame, blewup the logjam upriver, the river promptly changed course. Tom said that for many years you could walk across the Cane River without getting your dress wet. (VCCA tours are great history lessons. 5

Our tour ended with a fabulous dinner featuring world famous Natchitoches meat pies at Lasyone s. We also had a special treat during that evening. Lori Tate who played the bridegroom s mother in Steel Magnolias entertained us with many humorous and ribald antedotes. 8 The new cars And the old cars 2011/12 ACTIVITIES AND TOURS (Bill Bradford) May 7th to 11th, St. Louis, MO 15th Annual NATIONAL SOUTHERN SPRING TOUR for 4-6 cylinder Chevys thru What s so interesting, Shelia? We will be touring the picturesque St. Genevieve County, visit the Museum of Transportation and the 150 year old Hardt farm. We'll take a ride on the Wabash Frisco and Pacific Railroad, visit the famous Gateway Arch and museum and stop at Doug Kirberg's vintage car and memorabilia collection. The Southern Spring Tour is limited to 50 Chevys. VCCA members only. For more information contact: Bob &Cindy Varwig(314) or (314) ; bob.varwig@sbcglobal.net To request registration material contact: Bill & Sheila Bradford ; wtb@swbell.net Note from Ron and Linda Holter Yes, they are fun to watch. Ron and I are trying to put together a "Tour to the Tour" (and a "Tour from the Tour?") for this trip. I'm not quite sure who all is going from the San Jac region, but this is the route that looks like it makes the most sense to me for those of us who are driving: 8

Up US 59 to Texarkana, up I-30 to Little Rock and then up US 67 to St. Louis (with a brief stretch on I-55N in St. Louis). I do have a link to a map but I think I have to send that separately. Meet-up points could be in Livingston at 105 and 59, in Nacagdoches if the Murrays are going and in Texarkana (for Clay and Judy). I would suggest some sort of activity in the Little Rock area (any ideas?) as that would be a good stopping point for the night. The plan would be to leave Sunday morning, stop in Little Rock for the night and drive into St. Louis on Monday. Anybody who is trailering their car and would like to caravan would be welcome, too. I don't know who all is going on this trip so I've just included the usual suspects and a few I think might be interested. Bill, if you know of people who have signed up that I didn't include, please forward this on to them. viewing of the famous private car collection in Ankeny, Iowa. If you are interested in the drive and car collection visit contact Clay and Judy. More information in June newsletter. I need to get the form turned in to Clay and Judy for sanctioning as soon as possible, so if you're interested, let me know. I also need to know how many rooms to try to line up in Little Rock. Thanks! Linda Linda L.
