Editors Gary and Helen Moore 1964 Kansas City Area 50 years 2014 February 2015 VAIRC R Volume 51 Issue 2 Heart of America Corvair Owners Association February Meeting Highlights Final Round Up Report: We re in the black! With no secretary to read minutes (Kim is feeling much better now), no parades or cruises to report and no problems with the newsletter or website to discuss, the outgoing treasurer s report from Mike Dawson was the night s big news. We finally settled up with the Radisson and we had a net profit of about $3000 from the 2014 GPCRU. The HACOA Executive Board recommended that half the money go into our treasury for club activities, and the remaining half be split between CORSA and Jeff Barrett's Coast to Coast Cruise on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. (See Page 4.) The club approved the recommendation during the general meeting. If members have suggestions for activities to spend our club s share of the remaining $1500 on, let our current Treasurer Gary Jones or Social Chair Scott Allison know. Oh, and while you are talking to Gary remember that dues are due and please fill out a new membership form. Kevin Koch gave an update on our Holiday party. We had 38 people at Cascone s. If everyone seems to like it, we may use it again next year. Some people brought items to the party for the City Union Mission or donated money. Kevin got a thank you note from them for our donations. Thanks to Kevin for taking care of the holiday arrangements and seeing that our donations got into the necessary hands. We also received hand written thank you notes for our donations to The Christmas Store of Platte County, Synergy Services, Inc., and The Salvation Army. Those donations were made from our auction proceeds. Scott Allison, Social Chair, ran through the list of up coming events. (See calendar on Page 2) We had updates on the health and wellbeing of absent members. Janet Cozad is in rehab with new meds for a broken pelvis. (Newest update: She may be able to return home next week.) We miss the Cozad s and hope Janet continues to heal. Although not in the best of health, Don and Irmajean Barta decided to take a trip to Hawaii, if they had to go on stretcher. After announcing January birthdays and reminding everyone to keep an eye out for stuff for the auction in May, President, Cliff Carlino turned the meeting over to Mike Dawson for the night s program. Mike began the program by showing a brochure he picked up at the KC Auto Show in the 1990 s about electric cars. After that he had everyone go around the room and introduce himself (or herself) as if they were new members. The weather outside was dark and unpleasant so the parking lot session continued indoors after the program ended. by Helen Moore Top and middle: We don't call it social hour for nothing. Here we are enjoying each other's company. Bottom: Vice-President Mike Dawson leads the after meeting program.

The Preventive Maintenance Series By Mike Dawson Mid-Winter Garage Projects If mid-winter has you weary of house projects, football games and terrible TV shows, consider some fun garage projects that help organize your Corvair stuff while just making you feel good. Below are some of the ways I have amused myself. If you have a neat idea, submit it to the VairCor! HACOAnews@gmail.com Specialty Tool Wall Board: Special tools that are used infrequently can hide themselves in the wrong drawer, get left in a different work area and generally cause grief when you know you have them somewhere but can t remember where. A wallboard does not encroach on garage space like a cabinet and you can spot a tool quickly as well as notice when one is missing. I used ¾ pre-finished particleboard cut to fit vacant wall areas. Pre-finished particleboard needs to have pilot holes for attaching screws when mounting items, but the slick white finish wipes off nicely and it reflects light back onto the floor space. The bottom of my tool board rests on the floor to help support the weight and it is anchored into the concrete wall. Mounting Fixtures For Specialty Tools: I like to practice wood working techniques and finishes by creating mounting fixtures out of scrap lumber thrown in a box from larger wood projects. It can be fun and challenging coming up with creative ideas that are functional. Using combinations of hardwoods, stains, and various finishes just adds a little extra touch and makes them easy to clean. Air Tool Holders: There are a lot of specialty air tools that make Corvair work easier which can be picked up at swap meets, garage sales and Harbor Freight at reasonable prices. Stuffing them in my bottom tool box drawer was not the answer so I made another wall board similar to the one described above, adding chuck key mounts under each tool (why don t we have a universal chuck key law the government has a myriad of regulations we don t need). Grease Gun Storage: I have two grease guns I use regularly; one is air powered (one handed) and the other manual. Both work great but will occasionally leak a drop or two of oil, especially with synthetic grease. I used scrap lumber and a couple of plastic lids to make vertical storage in an area that had no other use. The plastic lids catch any oil that escapes. Air Compressor Filter: Air filters for my vintage two stage Ingersoll- Rand air compressor are $25 on the aftermarket so I used a spare late model air cleaner, a flexible hose from the parts store, two clamps and some minor welding to create a larger remote filter that costs $5 to change and less frequently. Page 3

Page 4 Dear Members and Officers of Heart of America Corvair Owners Association: I am involved with a wonderful project and I need your help! Please allow me to tell you a little about myself, my involvement with Corvairs, and, most importantly, the project I would like for you to become a part of. My name is Jeff Barrett. I have owned Corvairs since I was a teenager in the '70s. I have been a member of CORSA, Inc. since I am past President of my home chapter, CORSA N.C. Nationally, I am past Edward N. Cole Award Chairman and a certified CORSA concours judge. I hosted the 1988 Corsa International Convention and I have been responsible for hosting or co-hosting an annual regional show in North Carolina since the mid- 80s. I am responsible for the cosmetic restoration of the C.P.F.-owned Super Monza. I own and restored the bizarre LOST CAUSE Corvair (see 12/2004 Communique). I say all of this to help you know I am a sincere Corvair Lifer hoping to do good things for the Corvair community and for kids in crisis. Next Spring, I am going to drive a 1965 Corsa literally from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. I am doing this as a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish America. If you are not familiar with this amazing organization, look at for a concise summary of their mission. Make-A- Wish grants special wishes to children who have life- threatening illnesses. Sadly, many times these wishes are the last happy memory the child and his family is able to share together. Make-A- Wish does an amazing thing for kids and their families who are in crisis. This journey will create tremendous exposure for Corvairs, CORSA, Inc., and local Corvair clubs. Numerous media sources will be with us along the way and various national automotive magazines will be picking up the story. As part of this journey, we will also be participating in the Route 66 Fun Run (www. azrt66.com). This is basically a three-day parade of 800+ vintage vehicles along 140 miles of old Route 66, which will yield even more media coverage. I will depart from coastal North Carolina on April 23, 2015 and arrive in Bogada Bay, California on May 9, Jeff Barrett of CORSA North Carolina has pledged to drive his 1965 Corsa Coast to Coast this summer. My goal is to raise $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish America. To do this, I need your help! Several Corvair clubs have already made donations to this project, but I would like to see all CORSA chapters involved. I am hopeful your club, and individuals in your club and in your community, would be interested in being a part of this with a financial contribution. Please share this with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, people in other car clubs you belong to, and anyone else who will listen. Additionally, the exact route has not been finalized, but I am hopeful Corvair clubs along the route will be willing to help with local fundraising events when I pass through your area. I will contact those near the route when I know exactly how I will go. Finally, please know that all personal expenses along the route (food, fuel, lodging, etc.) are my donation to Make-A- Wish. No donated funds will be used for my personal benefit. If you need more information, please contact me at or jortplace@charter.net. If you are ready now to help the kids that Make-A-Wish supports, please send checks to Coast to Coast for the Kids, 8 Lynnette Drive, Fairview, NC Make- A-Wish has 501-C non-profit status and receipts will be issued for tax purposes. Sincerely, Jeff Barrett

Mid-Winter Tech Session 2015 by Gary Moore Page 5 Helen peeked in to count 22 people listening to Mike's tech session. Most of the wives were upstairs visiting with Sandy. Mike Dawson s Mid-Winter Tech Session set a new record with 35 in attendance. Forrest Andrews (formerly of the Mid-Continent Corvair Club) and his son Wayne were visitors to the session. Terry Kalp, accompanied by Mark Welte drove up from Wichita, KS and Keith Hammett made the trip from Springfield MO. Cindy Anders of Belton (daughter of Dorothy and Chuck Morris) became a member of the club at the event. The topic for the session was parts identification. Mike pointed out that everyone should get a copy of the Corvair Junkyard Primer before setting out on a search for used parts. He went over several items including; how to know the difference between the early, late and FC engines, where to look for the serial number on the block and on the heads, the differences between the early and late Powerglide transmissions, and how to identify the all the manual transmissions used in the Corvair. He also discussed the changes in the oil coolers over the years. Mike challenged someone to identify the carburetors by year. Scott Allison accepted the challenge and sorted the carburetors correctly, even finding that the 1965 model was missing. Mike had removed the carburetor from the table earlier to use in another demonstration and forgotten to return it. Just to spice things up a bit, raffle tickets were passed out and some donated door prizes were awarded. Mike had a table full of handouts. If you couldn t make it to the Tech Session the information can be found on the HACOA website. After the tech session Sandy took over. Several crockpots full of her delicious soups were set up. Also on the table were bread, crackers, chips and desserts of all kinds, supplied as side dishes by club members. And, of course, a good time was had by all Mike recommends the Corvair Junkyard Primer. Wayne and Forrest Andrews were special visitors to the tech session. Gary Jones purchased Don Wagner's HACOA jacket (it was too big for Don). He did not want to confuse people by wearing a jacket with Don on the front, after all there are three Dons and four Garys on the roster, so he used a thread picker to remove the stitching with no damage to the material.

Page 7 The President s Corner By Cliff Carlino Here we are heading into February and so far it has been a pretty good winter for us here in the heartland. We will see if the groundhog will get us an early spring. Hopefully the weather has not prevented everyone from working in their shops. I know that when I don t have a chance to get out and work on the cars I get withdrawal symptoms. Fortunately I have been kept busy so far this year! We finally got the final bill settled from the roundup and it was as expected. From the $3,000 profit the club donated half to charity. The board of directors is asking the membership to offer suggestions as to how the club can use the remaining profits. Keep in mind that per the not for profit regulations whatever we choose to do must benefit the entire membership and not just select members. We have received several suggestions so far and if you have an idea for something please don t hesitate to let any board member know so it can be added to the list. The board will review the suggestions and choose the best ones to be voted on by the membership. There is no deadline for this, but I expect that it will be decided in the next couple of months. I also am reminding everyone that dues are due, so please pay your 2015 dues if you have not yet done so. See you at the meeting, Cliff [Editor s note: Sheila Carlino wants Corvair T-shirts to make into a quilt. If you have any that you no longer need, please bring them to the next meeting.] Make Plans to Attend the 2015 Great Plains Corvair Round Up The Arkansas Corvair Club, CORSA Chapter 722, is proud to host the 2015 Great Plains Corvair Roundup in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
