3 I have heard if you build it they will come. I have found that is true. On Sunday, after Ike came through, Julie and I were down at the club talking about cleaning up the mess and decorating for the Luau. Al and Maddy Murray were walking their dog, stopped by, and started helping sweep and rake the seaweed off the lower deck. Pattie and Charlie Coleman drove in from Hattiesburg with the deck furniture on a trailer. Charlie had taken all the wrought iron furniture home with him before Gustav to clean, repair, and paint it. It looks great and we now have a Gold Katrina table. My brother-in-law, Lenny Edwards came with his tractor and pushed all the seaweed and debris to the street. Barry Skellie, Kathy Burns, Steve Harmon, and Alan Pace stopped by and pitched in and helped clean and put the tables, chairs, and picnic tables around the deck. Thank you for stopping by and volunteering your help. As the week progressed, Howard Kapp, Lenny Edwards, Richard Hopkins, and Kenny Woodward worked hard getting the club ready for the big Luau on Saturday night. Ricky Kapp brought his trailer in on Friday night and with help from Fred (dad) Welch, Zoran Whelan, Ron Irby, Lawrence Simpson, Brad (from PierCon) we unloaded tables, chairs, bar and kitchen stuff. We kept Linda busy rearranging the sail trailer to accommodate everything. We were all hungry so Sally Kapp went home and fixed us a big pot of chili. It was delicious. I even saw Freddy (son) Welch helping on Friday. As the Luau got closer, Bo Clarke arrived at the club on Saturday morning about 5:00 a.m. to start the pig. He cooked all day, he had to run an errand and asked me to baste the pig, I tried and I would have helped cook more but I couldn t lift the lid on the smoker. Thank you to Joe Fleming who opened the smoker for me. The pig was absolutely scrumptious (Bo has a secret marinade recipe). Alan Pace came by to see if anything was going on and was sent to get beer from Shirley Steen s house and ice to cool the beer. June and Julie arrived to decorate and when I left the club was beginning to really look like a great Luau was going to take place. About 5:45 p.m. (about 15 minutes before Luau time) it started to pour down rain, the rain blew in, we moved things around, got started a little late and then we ate, danced and had a great time. Julie lit the fire pit and we had our fire and water feature. We even celebrated the marriage of John and Beth Robbins. Congratulations! Thanks to all of you. Work on the building is moving along and as you can see the hardi plank is going up, the rails on the stairways and porch have been installed, and soon the sheetrock will be up. We should be opening the upstairs to our club by approximately the first week in November. Since we lost the doublewide we have opened the bar downstairs on Thursday, 4:00, Grill your Own; Friday, 4:00; and Saturday, 4:00. The bar and menu are slightly modified. CROQUET COMING AL O BANION Croquet is still scheduled for November 8 at 105 Yucca Drive, the Yacht Club Annex! It's Jewel's house of course, the same place as last time. The main difference is that we will be playing 6-wicket instead of 9- wicket. I have never played 6-wicket but understand it can get quite brutal because of the narrowness of the wickets plus it is team play with each team consisting of two or four players. It involves strategy rather than just running around knocking balls through the wickets. We are planning on coffee in the earlier morning then beer plus all sorts of food depending on what people bring. We will have final information in the November newsletter. Rounding out our list of new members are Peter & Kate Smeele of Hattiesburg and William Schmidt of River Ridge, Louisiana. We have one application that was on the board before Gustav. This is a good time to have everyone complete a Member Information Form. In order to make LBYC better, we need to communicate better. So please complete this form and return it ASAP. So it really would be nice to have everyone s . RACE & SAIL COMMITTEE PHILIP WHITSITT Maybe this year s storms are behind us now. We can bring our boats back out of hiding and have fun doing some fall sailing. Check your calendars for October 25, November 1 and 8 th. Let s have a LBYC Harbor Races: Fall Series on these three consecutive Saturdays. Since our bulletin board went with the trailer I will hand out registrations as I see each of you. Please call me at if the dates approach and I haven t gotten you registered. ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE JUNE WIGGINS Hi folks! I would like to thank each and every person who came to the Luau on September 20 th. What a party and what a storm! It just proves you can have fun in the rain! A special big thanks to Bo Clark- he was there all day cooking the pig and some chicken!(and the last part was in the rain!). Mike Vickery also cooked some wonderful brisket for us. Julie Noble cooked the rice and a dessert and helped decorate- a big thanks! Marguerite Hess helped decorate and after a call from a water soaked me -brought much needed towels and sweaters and jackets- thanks from the bottom of my water soaked heart! Thanks to Barry Skellie for the wonderful coleslaw! I believe the wonderful cookies were from Judy Simpson- MmMm- good. Joe Fleming helped Bo with the pig and helped decorate- Thanks! Linda Johnson, as usual, did her outstanding job taking care of all of us. John and Beth got married that day and we all shared in their happiness, and their wedding cake! Good luck and have a happy marriage! I just can t tell you all what a wonderful group of people you are and I am so happy to be a part of this yacht club. Well its almost time for another BUNCO night - but sadly- we will have to wait until November. We need to be inside for that sort of thing. So- we will wait until we can be in our new club! The order for the Lobster must be placed by Tuesday October 28 th. REAR COMMODORE JULIE NOBLE Well, what a month! Gustav blew in with Ike right behind and changed our Yacht Club lives again! But - what a wonderful Long Beach Yacht Club family we have. Many of us feel that our club got stronger after Katrina and this feeling was reinforced in the last several weeks. Thank you to EVERYONE that helped pack up, offer storage for various things, clean up, set up, cook, decorate, bar tend, offer moral support, etc, etc.!!! A huge thank you to Lenny Edwards, Shelda's brother-in-law, for his many hours on his tractor cleaning up our grounds. If you've been down to the club, you've also seen our "Katrina" table that Charlie Coleman took home to Hattiesburg and straightened out and painted gold! Again, thank you to everyone. Even with all that has been going on "storm related", we managed to have our annual Luau on the 20th. It was great (if you didn't mind getting wet - and I mean WET!). We had a good crowd and a lot of fun (I wonder if Randy, the DJ, has ever worked in his trailer before?). If you haven't been down lately, come and see the progress on our new building. It won't be long and we'll be painting and getting it ready to open upstairs. We are having grill-your-own on Thursday night again and please check your calendar for other upcoming events. NOMINATING COMMITTEE JOE FLEMING, CHAIRMAN Report of the Nominating Committee, Long Beach Yacht Club On 18 August 2008, the Long Beach Yacht Club Board of Governors established a Nominating Committee for the purpose of providing a slate of Flag Officers and members of the Governing Board to the general membership for a vote. Members of the Nominating Committee are: Ed Keefer, Judy Simpson, Kathy Burns, Bill Caraway, Glenn Bohne, Sally Kapp, Becky Rajala, and Joe Fleming. Joe Fleming was appointed as Chairman. On 12 September 2008, the Nominating Committee held its first meeting at Patti Steagall s house. Attending this meeting were: Ed Keefer, Judy Simpson, Kathy Burns, Glenn Bohne, Sally Kapp and Joe Fleming. We had a quorum and therefore could conduct business.
