2 Welcome to in 26th 28th September 2010 Dear colleague, It is my pleasure to invite you to the meeting in, from the 26th to the 28th September The Danish Coastal Authority (Kystdirektoratet) is this year s host of Kring. We will show you how we handle coastal protection and deal with Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in the densely populated area north of Copenhagen. has more than 7000km of coastline, and the Kring meeting will cover about 100km of the Danish coastline. The northern coastline of Zealand is a very popular recreational area with sandy beaches, clay cliffs up to 20m high and thousands of holiday homes. The annual erosion rate is approx. 0.5 meters, and over the last 100 years, coastal protection has utilised hard materials (granite and concrete) to help prevent the houses from falling into the sea. During the site visits we will show you this beautiful coastline and explain how ICZM is handled in this part of the country. The north-eastern part of the Zealand coastline just north of Copenhagen is the most exclusive coastline in with many expensive properties located just a few meters from the sea, each with their own individual seawalls. This poses a huge challenge, both in respect to ICZM and the climatic influence of sea level rise, in particular, how the necessary coastal protection measures are planned in cooperation with the owners, the local authorities and the national authorities. 2

3 We will also take you for a visit of the research facilities of DHI, Danish Hydraulics Institute with an opportunity to learn about the extensive environmental monitoring by DHI of the planned Fehmern Belt connection between and Germany. The Kring meeting will end in Copenhagen with a site visit to the port of Copenhagen and we will show you how our capital is preparing for the sea level rise. We are still working on the details of the programme, but I am confident, that we have planned a very interesting programme for you. I am looking forward to welcoming you to in. 4 Dear members of the Kring This year our next meeting will bring us to. After our trip to Poland and especially remembering the official Maritime Office orchestra at the closing dinner it was a great pleasure to be invited to the beautiful Danish country at the border of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. A few years ago we were able to visit this border-point and many of us had besides wet feet - very good memories about it. Not only the different coastal problems and solutions and a very interesting trip on the West coast remind us of a very successful meeting. Besides local problems with volcanic-dust the international problem of climate-change has world-wide led to the first ideas of the European coastal policy for the next centuries. It is for that reason that my expectations for the next meeting in are very high. I am sure that our Danish colleagues and friends are able to offer us - again - a very interesting program. To support our KRING as the platform of one of the most experienced coastal knowledge movements in Europe I invite you all for our next meeting in September. With kind regards, Ing. The hotel is beautifully situated just a few meters from the beach and will be our base camp during the Kring meeting.
