We divided into four teams of three. I don t remember which team won but I do remember my team lost. I couldn t roll the ball slowly enough to score any points. So much for playing a lawn game indoors on carpet. Dinner was a great consolation prize. The wrenching day was held April 21 after the original and rain dates were both canceled due to the weather. Tony Valicenti, Jim Letarte and Glenn Hanson came to do work. Glenn and I made quick work of changing his brake and clutch fluids. Jim fixed his left high beam (it turned out to be a bashful electrical connector). David tried to help Tony fix his heated grips but couldn t find the cause. I replaced his battery. There were others who came to watch. We all enjoyed the lox and bagels supplied by Tony. Thanks to Tony for that and for John Didier who graciously hosted the venue. Lastly, I ve uploaded to Shutterfly photos of G2 awards received going back to They are in the Awards folder. So feel free to peruse them. May has a breakfast ride and seminar on the 5 th, a dinner ride to Colony House on the 12 th and a day ride on the Memorial Day weekend. We hope to see you at these events. 4 From the District Educator Here it is almost May, and Mother Nature still wants to throw a few curves at us. Nice sunny day then snow that night. Who ticked her off? We just completed our riding courses here in Vandalia. We had Trike Trailering on Saturday the 21 st and had 6 trike riders and 5 co-riders improving their skills while pulling a trailer. On Sunday the 22 nd we had 5 bikes and 3 co-riders improving their skills. Mother Nature threw some rain at us but it cleared up and dried up for the range exercises: then it got cooler but it did improve. I want to thank our instructors for Illinois, Dan Davis, Kris Andre, Eric Echols and myself for taking the time to come here to teach these courses. I would like to thank Bonnie O Guinn, Chapter U director, for allowing us to use her trike and trailer for the demonstrations of the exercises and for Chapter U providing snacks and water and a good meal at the Keyes on Saturday night. A fun time was had by all. I still have some room for the trike course in Sterling May 6. At this time, 4/22/18, I have 7 openings left. The Sterling ARC class had to be canceled for lack of participation. Please keep riding safely. Any questions about riding courses or the levels program just give me a call or me. 6 April 22 Meeting Minutes Director: Ellary welcomed everyone and announced that Tony Valicenti had joined the staff as secretary. He offered condolences to Mike Zyskowski on the passing of his mother. He also welcomed two former B2 couples, Paul and Gerri Konczak and Kiko and Carle Cesar. Ellary briefly described the April 21 Wrenching Day, held after two rain dates. Although only 3 bikes were wrenched, many others showed up to eat bagels and lox and talk about their aches and pains and to find out what new things people had put in and on their bikes. Thanks again for John Didier s hospitality. He also announced birthdays and anniversaries. Ride Coordinator: Craig reviewed the upcoming events (see Ride Committee page for details). Sometime in May, Craig will organize a GW Awareness event at Nielsen s. G2 can choose their own date. Craig suggested that we take the opportunity to explain GWRRA and G2 to prospective members who are visiting Nielsen s and requested some help putting flyers, collages, etc. together for a card table station. Tony outlined the June 2-9 ride to and around Athens, Ohio. We will have a mile the first day, and stay in a place TBD, get an early start on 6/3 to arrive early in Athens with a possible scenic ride before arrival or after check-in. We will choose from the 9 or more recommended rides around the area while staying at the Ohio University Inn, 331 Richland Ave., Athens, OH Being a college town, Athens offers many cultural venues, restaurants and other things of interest near the campus. We will depart on 6/8 and enjoy a scenic ride west on our way to our evening roost and arrive back home on June 9.. Membership: Jim Fairman stated that he is now the keeper of the store. So contact him if you want any G2 apparel. Miscellaneous: David Bierman talked about his trip to Scottsdale and explained how he shipped the motorcycle there and back. He attended two chapter meetings while there and took day rides with the Mesa Chapter. Then he discussed the need to limit your risks, relaying a story where he fell victim to looking at his GPS while driving and almost had an accident, raising the concern for ourselves and to demonstrate how easy it is for others to take their eyes off the road and the need for us to check our mirrors for that potential from behind. This then led to many sharing how the co-rider can help see things that the rider might miss, and the words they use to get the rider's attention. 8 Travels, Technology, and Signs of the Times Is it really progress? For those of you too young to remember, gas stations were once a full- service operation and an attendant would come out to pump your gas, clean your windows and take your cash. Then came the self-service pump. While it isn t difficult to pump gas or clean my own windows, it does require getting out of the car. Next came the credit cards on the pumps. Well that was convenient; that is until scammers developed a way to get personal credit information. Ok, so now I use my Skimmer Scanner phone app to scan the pump for devices as well as pull on the plastic card slot to make sure a skimmer isn t on it. Then, I can use my credit card. The final step is to scan my VIP rewards card to get up to 20 cents a gallon off my gasoline if I have enough points. Hopefully I haven t dropped my wallet, phone, or keys as I try to juggle all the items in my hands just to pump my car full of gas! This is more convenient? On the flip side, while I do like the convenience of going through the drive through at McDonalds- the original fast food chain-to get my Diet Coke or whatever, the idea has spread. Other fast food chains joined that convenience effort, followed by coffee shops such The Good Book Guide For those of you who like military novels I can strongly recommend Fatal Terrain by Dale Brown. Set in the mid-nineties it deals with the aftermath of the declaration of independence by the Republic of China (Taiwan). China chooses to take back the island by force using nuclear armaments, if necessary. Under a radical admiral they execute a plan to blame Taiwan and the United States for aggression against the PROC. But the U.S. Strikes back using the EB-52 Megafortress, a high-tech battleship in the air equipped with state of the art weaponry including stealth cruise missiles. The detail in this novel is amazing making these fictional events fully believable. And yet it is easy enough to read and will keep the reader on the edge of his seat. Enjoy it. Ellary Kahan 8 as Starbucks and donut shops such as Dunkin Donuts. Banks too have had the drive through option for awhile. Newer to the trend is pharmacies, which I also do like. We are already a society of overweight, under-exercised people. However, we no longer have to get out of the car and exercise our legs or lungs, even for a few moments, to get our fast food or beverages, money, or medications. Now the smokers don t have to exercise those legs or lungs to get their nicotine fix either. Here in Arizona, I noticed a cigarette drive through and my hubby Dan also saw a drive through Mini Mart/liquor store. I wonder what will be the next convenience trend? Dan added a thought with the advent of the new self-driving cars one won t even have to drive through the drive-through ourselves! Wow, we ve come a long way baby or have we? Darlene Parks
