1 1 Director S MeSSage Roger Tyyska Volume 43 Number 8 August 2014 The second picnic of the summer season has concluded; only one more to go. A big Thank you to John and Mary Root for again hosting a regular monthly meeting. It was a beautiful summer day, a bit on the cool side, but no one brought their swimming suit. The food was excellent as usual! New business was devoted to our responsibilities at Water Street for Back to the Bricks-Saturday's car show. See the meeting minutes for further details. Remember, Buicktown was invited to re-locate to Water Street. I think the place is special, especially for Buick enthusiasts. That's where our founding fathers began the Buick Motor Company and then General Motors. Be sure to see the video about Billy Durant shown in the Durant-Dort office building. Take a moment of your time to reflect and honor the Buick legacy. If you want a BttB T-shirt, you must go through the Main Gate off 5 th Avenue at the White parking lot at UM- Flint (offered to the first 1000 drivers). If not, by-pass that gate and drive the back streets to Grand Traverse. There will be signs at Water Street (it's North of the Flint River). Charlie Jones has again volunteered to be at the gate to greet you. His team will be on site at 5:00 and he opens the gate at 6:00 AM. Also, we will staff a booth to give out BCA / Buicktown information and lemonade to the visitors. This is an opportunity to recruit new membership. All members should extend a hand to meet and greet new folks interested in Buick and Buicktown. Your officers were concerned for an adequate number of volunteers to sign up for the essential jobs at the gate and for parking assistance. We must do these jobs well. When many share the load, all can have a good time. Let's not over-burden the few. Your officers can plan and organize but volunteers make things happen. Let's make Water Street a big success for all in 2014! I am told the Water Street's activity has been offered to Buicktown for the next four years; that means we get to plan and generally manage the site on Saturday for all BttB Buick enthusiasts. We now become the hosts for all Buick Clubs and independent owners. Some members ask me, Why not give the Reatta Division and Buick Turbo Club a chance to share the load? You, the Buicktown members, vote on this by your willingness to volunteer. So, does Buicktown do it alone or expect involvement from the other Buick participants in years 2, 3 and 4? Speak up, don't be bashful! Extend a welcome to Dave Bloch, a recent member, as he has become our new Buicktown secretary replacing Suzanne Sherman. Read your calendar for the many upcoming car events. Save the date, August 27 th, for the picnic at Joe and Bernice's place. I'll see you out and about: Cruising, downtown on the Bricks and at Water Street. Go Buick! Roger

4 4 Buicktown Meeting Minutes July 23, 2014 The location for the club meeting/picnic was at the home of John and Mary Root in Flushing who hosted this event. Festivities started 5:00 p.m. and concluded at approximately 8:00 p.m. There were 33 members and 1 guest in attendance. Roger Tyyska called the meeting to order and announced that Dave Bloch had volunteered to fill the vacated position of Club Secretary. A member s vote was taken and Dave was unanimously elected Club Secretary. Because the last meeting minutes were published in the Club Newsletter, it was not necessary to read the minutes. There were no corrections; and the minutes were approved as written. Treasurer Chuck Anderson gave a brief report of the financial transactions of the Club for the previous month including balances in the Club s bank account. His report was accepted. Social Director Millie Lutz reported that she sent out five get well cards to Club members. She also stated we still need volunteers for the autumn Club Car Tour. Roger then made a statement regarding the Back-to-the-Bricks (BttB) event that will take place on Saturday August 16 and the Buick Club s participation in it at Carriage Town on Water Street. Roger stated that both BttB and General Motors are committed to preserving and promoting this historic site and we, the Buicktown Car Club should be honored to participate. Roger gave a brief history of the Buick club s participation in BttB. Roger stated that the Water Street area will be open to ALL Buick cars that want to park there not only Buick club members. Charlie Jones volunteered to manage the gate (Grand Traverse and Water Street) at 5:00 a.m. and at the evening s end Charlie said he had enough volunteers to manage the gate. Millie will be managing the tent and table where the Buick Club will be promoted and Millie stated at the evening s end that she had sufficient club member volunteers to manage her space. Dave will provide lemonade and dispenser at the table Roger stated that BttB will not give Buick Club volunteers BttB Tee shirts but will provide signs. Roger stated that he contacted BttB Mary Wood concerning renting a golf cart as a shuttle between Water Street and Saginaw Street but there is nothing definite at this time. Roger brought up for discussion the club trailer which is storing various club paraphernalia and what to do with it. Suggestions were offered but nothing was decided. The meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Secretary Dave Bloch
