5 Trailer Ball Fiasco By Jon Warner My next door neighbor bought a used pick-up truck to use in hauling around a bunch of stuff he and his friends keep in his fenced-in back yard. Either he didn t know it had been converted to an air-suspension shock system or did know and didn t check it out carefully before buying. Either way this was what caused what happened next. The trailer receiver is welded to a frame support and because of the air-suspension system, was lower to the ground than normal. Our hero of this story didn t notice that the ball hitch was upside down in the receiver and started driving back from Orlando on the Beachline with his new purchase. Unknown to him, the air-suspension had a very slow leak and the truck was slowly getting lower to the ground and the hitch ball started dragging on the pavement. Now since this was a very slow leak, the ball did not catch on the pavement, instead, it proceeded to grind the ball down. When he got home, he noticed the truck was almost too low to get over the curb and what was left of the ball was starting to drag on his lawn. Let this be a lesson for all of us: 1) If you buy a used vehicle, check the suspension to make sure if it s an air-suspension, it isn t leaking; 2) If you have a trailer hitch attached, remove the ball unit unless you are going to actually us it right then; and 3) Don t tell everyone about this and let them take picture of the cut in half trailer ball.
