Box Redding, CA shastagemandmineral@gmail.com The RocToc President s Message: Summer s Here: Club members are making the Gilson Lapidary School, out club workshop, a busy place, now that warm weather s arrived. The club has participated in several field trips this year and Hugh Watson continues to use his organization and imaginative skills to keep finding us places to visit and to collect. The SGMS gem and mineral show is coming together, with dealer contracts, and publicity posters and fliers being printed. Juniors are working on show projects of gems and jewelry. We welcome everyone s participation to keep the Shasta Gem and Mineral Society an educational, welcoming, and fun place to pursue the earth arts and sciences. Your humble servant, Alan Leedy, President (sneaked in by the editor) The Club Meeting for June : The Annual Picnic, at Anderson River Park pavilion, Friday, June 9. Bring your place settings, silverware and drinks, along with a dish to complement hamburgers, chicken and hot dogs provided by the club. Bottled water will be available. Bring folding chairs if you have them. Setup starts at 5:30 pm Potluck starts at 6:00 pm Rocks, minerals, jewelry and associated items

2 The RocToc June of 10 Minutes of the club meeting May 12, President Leedy called the meeting to order, followed by the flag salute. Two new guests, Marsha xxx and Ken xxx, were welcomed. Members can read meeting minutes, the Board of Directors meeting minutes, and the entire Roc Toc on the SGMS Facebook page. Board Director, Alan Pence has told Alan that he will be unable to continue his duties as a Board member. This was not part of the meeting, but is included here as a notice of concern for Alan and information for our members. Mary Colbert, our Treasurer, also has been under the weather lately. We hope she is feeling better now. Cedarville, California. Alan Leedy recently bought the agate estate of Bud Rogers, one of the original miners. In the collection was a group of color slides of many of the mining activities and miners. Glen Miller copied and retouched the slides, and then put them into a Power Point presentation. Steve Puderbaugh narrated the first showing of this presentation for the club meeting. Alan Leedy introduced new T-shirts in blue or black, with the club logo on the back. Price is $15. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30PM following the slide show. Submitted by Assistant Secretary Sherri Papowich Hugh Watson, field trip director, reported some good finds from the April trip to Peterson Peak, north of Reno. Evidently about 20 collectors made the trip. Hugh announced the May 20, trip planned for Tuledad agate collecting. Photos of the field trip group are already on the Facebook page. May 27 th is the date of the next rock swap at the club workshop, 6741 Airport Road. It s usually 10 AM 2 PM. Photo by Glen Miller The June meeting is the Annual Picnic at Anderson River Park. Steve Puderbaugh, and Hugh Watson will be organizing the barbecue meet. Club members should bring dishes for the meal, along with rocks for the fund-raising auction. Wire wrapping classes start on May 11, continuing the next four Thursdays, through June 1. Silversmith classes will be announced via Facebook when Steve Puderbaugh coordinates dates with the city Parks and Recreation Department. One of the iconic agates for Redding rockhounds has been the angel wing plume agate mined at the Bull Canyon claim west of

3 The RocToc June of 10 SGMS Board of Directors May 23, 2017 Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order by President Leedy at 6:00. Board Members Present: Leedy, Sweetwood, Evans, Gutkowski. Members Present: Glen Miller, Steve Puderbaugh, Pat Foster, Cindy Williamson, Tim Williamson. Alan Pence has asked to resign his Board of Directors position for personal reasons. Marianne Sweetwood moved to have Ann Morningstar added to the board was seconded by Billie Evans. The board voted unanimously 4-0 to support the motion. The board discussed the need for a back-up person to support each office and committee chairperson. The importance of sharing knowledge for all levels of administration is critical for the club to be successful. The Board welcomes input from our members at all times. Please come to one of our meetings if you have needs or ideas to share. June picnic assignments have been arranged. Marianne will purchase a variety of the food items. Steve is bringing coolers with ice, and bottled water. Pat Foster will purchase the paper products. We assume that chefs Puderbaugh and Watson will be performing splendidly, as they did last year. The club will provide barbecued hamburgers, chicken and hot dogs. Members, please bring a salads or dessert to share to go with the meats. Also, please bring your own drinks. The club will provide some bottled water. Picnic auction proceeds are earmarked for the benefit of workshop and programs. Please bring rocks, jewelry, mineral specimens, or other items to be auctioned. The meeting adjourned at 7:05. Alexandrite gemstones are extremely rare and desirable since they change color based on the lighting Geological information: The alexandrite variety of Chrysoberyl displays a color change (alexandrite effect) dependent upon the nature of ambient lighting. Alexandrite effect is the phenomenon of an observed color change from greenish to reddish with a change in source illumination. Alexandrite results from small scale replacement of aluminium by chromium ions in the crystal structure, which causes intense absorption of light over a narrow range of wavelengths in the yellow region (580 nm) of the visible light spectrum. Because human vision is more sensitive to light in the green spectrum and the red spectrum, alexandrite appears greenish in daylight where a full spectrum of visible light is present and reddish in incandescent light which emits less green and blue spectrum. 6 The RocToc June of 10 NATIONAL ACTION ALERT - RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR ROCKHOUNDS AND OFF ROADERS! URGENT! This is all hands on deck. Tell Interior Department your views on National Monuments. The Department of the Interior (DOI) is taking public comments concerning its review of Antiquities Act National Monuments. A list of monuments under review can be found online. A review of National Monuments has been a priority of the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the American Lands Access Association (ALAA) for years. This time we may have an unprecedented opportunity to provide constructive input early in the process. We must take advantage of the opportunity to seek the changes we want. Everyone who has an issue with National Monuments needs to weigh in on this. This action requires no money and no special expertise - just a couple of minutes of your time. You can bet that environmental and preservationists groups are weighing in. We must each answer this call. Please visit the link above without delay and tell the DOI what you think. Then please get ten of your friends to do the same. Comments may be submitted online at or by mail to Monument Review, MS-1530, U.S. Department of the Interior, 1849 C Street NW, Washington, DC A list of suggested talking points is listed below, but remember the more personal you make your comments the better. Martin Hackworth, Executive Director, Sharetrails.org/BlueRibbon Coalition SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS Legislation is always preferable to unilateral Executive action. We support the Utah Public Lands Initiative as the proper way of balancing preservation and multiple use of these lands. We support the concerns and comments of a truly diverse range of stakeholders, including affected counties, property owners, businesses, permit holder, residents and elected officials. The Monument should be reduced in size to the smallest acreage necessary to protect the true "objects" of the Monument. The Proclamation should be amended to recognize outdoor recreation, including motorized trail riding and historic permitted OHV events, as allowed uses or purposes of the Monument. Specific, established recreation corridors should be specifically identified for continuing use, including motorized recreation. If you know specific routes or have personal experiences to relate you should do so. Direction should be provided instructing that for any routes closed to motorized travel, the Secretary will determine whether an interim restriction with subsequent restoration of access is appropriate, and if not, the proper relocation or establishment of comparable additional motorized access that can be implemented to offset the closure. A motorized recreation representative should be a required member of any advisory council. This appeal is to rockhounds as well as to OHV riders! We share the same desire for access by road on public lands. Emotional pleas for more wilderness by select individuals and groups are designed to fence larger and larger areas of public lands, managed mostly by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Speak out to legislators, respectfully letting them know you have a personal interest is being able to use roads on public lands.

Michelle Stein or Lavena Setnor is offering lessons on how to make lampwork beads every Tuesday evening, and on Saturdays at the SGMS Gilman School workshop.
