1 PAGE 1 THE INFORMER information or requests to: Ctgms50@gmail.com PRESIDENT S RE- PORT AUGUST MEETING MINUTES 1 2 From the Front Desk President Betty Scarborough JULY MINUTES SHOP REPORT SHOW PHOTOS BY BOB PATTERSON EDITOR NOTES B - DAY & ANNIVERSARIES SHOWS AND EVENTS OFFICERS, AND CHAIRPERSONS SEPTEMBER 2011 Well we didn t have a newsletter last month which was good for me since I didn t have to come up with something to write. This month is a different story. We had a very nice social in July with Jim Vick s annual hot dog dinner. We had most of the club bring sides to go with them so there was way too much to eat. We really enjoy them and we really thank Jim for doing it again. For our August meeting we had a silent auction after our meeting it was fun, even though very few members ( a total of 18 signed in) showed up for the meeting. We did make a few bucks for the club. We now have more donations for another silent auction Tim found some of the rocks that Mr Myers gave us. A few are chipped and at least one is broke but our talented members can do a lot of stuff with them I just like the rocks they are all pretty. I am not too particular what they look like. If you have a story or report, please get it us for inclusion in our newsletter! We hope our ailing members are doing better and will be able to rejoin us soon. We miss all the members who don t come too often. We are running short on the gossip. I mean how are we supposed to keep up on all the news that is not fit to print. Our September meeting will be delayed a week since the first Monday will be Labor Day. A lot of people go out of town and others have company come into town. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. Also remember school will be starting so watch where you are driving since kids tend to get excited and don t pay attention where they are walking. PAGE 2 Minutes of the CTGMS meeting held Monday, August 1, 2011: by: Linda Hollowell President Betty Scarborough called the meeting to order at 7:10 P.M. Secretary Grace Hoy was out of town on job training session; no minutes from previous meeting were available.

The beginning balance was $4705.67; there were no deposits; checks were written in the amount of $1420.46, leaving a balance of $3285.21. Members accepted the report.

Errol Rutledge had a doctors meeting but got the Treasurer s Report to Betty for presentation. Old Business: There was no old business, as previous minutes were not available. New Business: Tim Walker, Shop Foreman, stated that the shop was in good shape. He said all it needed was a couple of switches. Before the meeting, Don Brenholtz had discussed how the club used to have a door prize at every business meeting. The person who won that door prize had to bring one for the next meeting. This was discussed during the meeting. Carlos Talley made a mo- tion that the club start doing that again. The motion was seconded by Kay McDaniel. The motion passed. Carlos volunteered to bring the first door prize next month. The Arlington Gem Club will hold their Gem and Mineral Show next month. Next month s meeting will be postponed until September 12 th due to the Labor Day holiday. After the meeting, there was a silent auction to raise money for the club. Items were provided by Betty Scarborough. Illnesses: Floyd Gee had a heart attack. Sally Lightfoot is doing better, but still not feeling completely well. Jim Owens is having trouble with his back. Joyce Talley said she had sent cards. Refreshments: Betty Scarborough, Joyce Talley, and Linda Hollowell will provide refreshments at the next meeting. Gary Hudson made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Tim Walker seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

3 Minutes of CTGMS meeting held Monday, July 11, 2011 (Since we did not have the report during the August meeting, I included it here Gary) The meeting was called to order. 24 members signed in. After the pledge of allegiance and the prayer, Minutes were approved. Errol gave the Treasurer s Report. He said that he was still working on the Show report. He has been straightening out his health problems since April. Expenses have been for the Show, a new refrigerator for the Club, supplies, and repair for the lawnmower. The Treasurer s Report was approved. Old Business: There was no old business. New Business: Joe Turnbow had sent rock specimens from Alaska. They were on the table to be seen, as well as a letter on the table about them. Kay McDaniel brought jewelry she made from stones that had been brought by the Pattersons-- very nice and enjoyed after the meeting. The View Fire Department had thanked folks who were taking part in the monthly donation opportunity on the water bill. This was for the response team who help with wildfires. This is the volunteer fire department that takes care of the area PAGE 3 where the CTGMS buildings are located. CTGMS members approved sending a $ donation. A guest, Bruce Grimes, was introduced. He has been bicycling for sixteen years, going around the world. He told the members present, I ve seen a few rocks, also. Everyone was reminded to let Joyce know of any illnesses so she can send cards. Carlos was thanked for finding the refrigerator and getting the new one. The old refrigerator was removed. Reports from Committee Chairpersons: Those able to attend and who gave reports were Tim Walker, Shop Foreman, and Charlie Lightfoot, Maintenance/Building Chairperson. Tim said that everything was working in the shop except for the green machine in the corner. He reminded everyone to read the Shop rules. Charlie said that the building was not having problems. One thing that still needed done was a display repair. Illnesses/Birthdays/Anniversaries: These can be found in The Informer. August refreshments will be provided by Kay McDaniel, Errol, and Marty. Remember to get it to me by the 20th of the month. Many thanks to Bob and Helen Patterson for having the newsletter printed each month. Wow, what a couple of busy months with no end in sight! I missed last month s newsletter because of no time to get it done. Good excuse...well I made a trip to Silver City, New Mexico over the Labor Day weekend. I did manage to go to the Gem and Mineral Show on Friday. The venue has moved to the old Wal-Mart building. This is a very much better place than before. There was actually room to move through the place without all the pushing and shoving and bumper to bumper activity. Plenty of parking space as well. This is always a good show and I enjoyed it very much. They always hold a field trip each day in which, I did not get to participate. Maybe next time. I purchased some bright baby blue chrysocolla rough...i think that s what it is from the Morenci Mines in New Mexico. Jerry Davis Gemstone of the Month SAPPHIRE Sapphire is the official birthstone for the month of September as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in It is also one of the birth stones for the Zodiac signs of Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius. Sapphire is given as a gem for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversaries while a star sapphire is given on the 65th wedding anniversary. Sapphire is the non-red variety of corundum (the red variety of corundum is ruby). A 9.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphire is the second hardest natural mineral. Blue is by far the most popular color for sapphires, but they can be almost any color, including yellow, green, white, colorless, pink, orange, brown, and purple. Padparadscha is the name for a rare orange-pink variety of sapphire and has a higher value than blue sapphires. Sapphires with inclusions of tiny, rutile needles exhibit an optical property called asterism. This is the star shaped effect seen in star sapphires and is usually only seen in cabochon cuts. Star sapphires usually have six ray stars, but twelve ray stars are also known. Rarely, when sapphires are cut en cabochon, they can demonstrate a cat's eye effect. This effect displays a thin band of light down the center of the stone and is known as chatoyancy. Heating colorless and very pale blue sapphires to high temperatures is done to give them an intense blue color This treatment can also improve the clarity of the stones by removing tiny inclusions. A rare variety of sapphire, known as color changing sapphire, exhibits different colors in different light. A color change sapphire is blue in natural light, and violet in artificial light. A similar effect is also seen in alexandrite. Sapphire was first created synthetically in 1902 and is hard to distinguish from natural sapphires except by gemologists. Lab grown sapphires range in price and smaller stones are frequently used in less expensive jewelry. gemstones/sapphire.htm AUGUST FLOWER MORNING GLORY MISSION STATEMENT The Central Texas Gem and Mineral Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of rocks, minerals and fossils. We offer field trips and provide educational opportunities and instruction to members in a variety of areas related to the Lapidary Arts and Jewelry making. We also award a scholarship to a student enrolled at a local college in a field closely related to geology.
