1 REDWOOD UNIT NEWSLETTER October Mule Whispers From Carole The ghosts, goblins, witches and other spooky things are almost here. My big witch, Elmira, is going to make an appearance at a party this coming Saturday night. We were hoping to have her fly over there on her broom, but I think she will be going by pickup truck! Don t eat too much candy and watch out for things that go bump in the night. The State Board meeting was very interesting and we learned knew things to report on at our November 1 st meeting. Our submission for a change in the State By-laws did not pass. We can discuss whether and how to proceed on this issue. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Freshwater School. Nomination of officers and board will be held. Dinner for the Munch Bunch will be 5:30ish-6:00 pm at The Sizzler. The warm weather is still here. But there are some cool, fall-like mornings and the evenings and night are getting darn nippy. Take warm jackets when you ride. Keep those equines moving along. 3 Redwood Unit General Membership Meeting Backcountry Horsemen of California October 4, 2017 Meeting called to order at 7 p.m. by President Carole Polasek. Quorum present. Board members attending: Carole Polasek, Darrel Polasek, Maris Hawkins, Cathy Mathena, Jeff Chase, Dick Wild, Lori White, Marlene Nylander, David Pritchard, Dale Hay, and Mort Scott. Absent: Susan Combes. Flag salute and pledge of allegiance. In welcoming members and guests Carole asked for a moment of silence for victims of the shooting in Las Vegas. Billie Mohr moved to approve the September 6, 2017, minutes as printed in the newsletter. Cathy Mathena seconded. Motion carried. Correspondence: Three horses lost for three weeks in Kern area returned to camp. Backcountry Horsemen of California needs a newsletter editor. Date and location of 2018 Rendezvous will be announced later. Treasurer Maris Hawkins presented the October treasurer s report. Marlene Nylander moved to accept the report and forward it to the audit committee. Gail Jenner seconded. Motion carried. Standing Committees Public Lands See Carole Polasek s report elsewhere in newsletter. Public Liaison Mort Scott had nothing new to report. He is still trying to contact the people to do the CPR/First Aid and chainsaw/ crosscut saw training. Education Jacque Murphy had nothing new to report. Other Committee Reports The October monthly ride will be October 20 at the Renner Ranch. Lori White will send an . Cathy Mathena had nothing to report on membership. Mail photos, with identification, to Historian Matt Giacomini. Lori White returned Save Your Horse and Dick Wild took it home. Arcata Fire Department has purchased 2 or 3 sets of the large animal rescue equipment and Carole and Darrel may help get it from Potter Valley to Arcata. French Ranch ride was great. The loose pony that lives on the ranch was finally caught by Marty Hobbs and his halter was removed. A big thank you to the Hobbs family for their hospitality and to Nancy Morelli for cooking. The membership ride at Cuneo also was a success, with eight new members. Matt Giacomini did the cooking. Thank you, Matt. First Aid/CPR training will be scheduled this fall after hunting season. Unfinished Business State by-laws may be changed following the state board meeting. A report will follow. Cathy Mathena nominated Matt and Cindy Giacomini to the board. Marlene Nylander will call officers and board members to see if they want to retain their positions and see if any other members would like to run for an office. New Business Cowboy Canned Food Drive is Saturday, November 18, riding out at noon for a little longer parade. We meet at the foot of C Street. A trip to Ma-Le l Dunes will follow, weather permitting. Unit Christmas dinner will be Saturday, December 9, at the Turf Room at Ferndale Fairgrounds. BYOB cocktails at 5 p.m. with roast beef dinner to follow at 6 p.m. Potluck around the meat. Folks are needed to help decorate. Kim Chamberlain moved for Gail Jenner to spend $200 on decorations and the table favors that will be gifted to ticket holders. Dessie Bartlett seconded. Motion carried. Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade is Sunday, December 17, and we will have a float. A committee will be chosen to decorate. Announcements Good of the order: A picture of a inch abalone from Gualala was shown. Dick Wild said that a woman fell from her horse at Clam Beach. She was not wearing a helmet and sustained a broken ankle. TrinaLyn Wilson was badly injured when she was thrown at Blue Lake arena. Her horse was stung by yellow jackets and bucked her off (after some effort), breaking vertebrae C2. TrinaLyn was wearing a helmet. David Pritchard suggested unit members dress for parades and functions in tucked in, button up shirt with collar. This will be dicussed at our November meeting. Next meeting is Wednesday, November 1, at Freshwater School. Join members for dinner at Sizzler in Eureka at 5:30 p.m. Meeting starts at 7 p.m. Next board meeting, if necessary, is October 25. BOX 6023 EUREKA, CA MISSION STATEMENT: To promote the use, care and development of California backcountry trails, campsites, streams and meadows; to advocate good trail manners. To promote the conservation and utilization of our backcountry resources in concert with livestock transportation. To keep the backcountry trails and forage areas open to horsemen on all public lands. To keep current information before the Corporation membership and its local Units regarding new legislation or management plans related to government regulations of the backcountry. To support or oppose new proposals, plans and restrictions as related to the interest of horsemen and those persons interested in recreational stock use and enjoying the backcountry. To promote the interest of people who, due to health or physical factors, need transportation other than by foot on backcountry trails. To assist in keeping the public informed of the vital need for a clean backcountry. To promote a working relationship with and keep the work and interests of the Corporation before our local, state and federal officials. To assist in the formation and continuation of the local Units to carry out these purposes. To promote public awareness and interest in the historical aspect of horsemen and stock in the backcountry and to help educate backcountry users on ways to use the trail and forage in a manner that conserves the backcountry resources
