PRESIDENT S CORNER Greetings, April turned out to be a good month to bring out our Corvairs from winter storage and many of us did for the School of Mines E-Days Car Show in Golden. Between RMC and PPCC members Corvairs outnumbered all other makes/models. Final count was Corvairs depending on who was counting. We all had a great time as the weather was perfect for early April. If you missed it, check out the April edition of the Drip Line. This was my first car show and the longest drive for my 68. It's hard to believe for as long as I've had it but it was a great boost to my confidence. I also calculated I got 20MPG! Check out the coverage here in the Drip Line. Sorry I missed the April Meeting and I want to thank Ed taking over and keeping things moving. Our May meeting will be substituted by our 2nd Annual PPCC Family Fishing Cruise & Picnic at Monument Lake. It's a short drive from Colorado Springs or Castle Rock so make sure your fishing license is renewed and I hope you will join us. I will send out a notice to get a head count for the Picnic. Once again the Tri-State Tune-Up was a blast! Thanks to Eric & Linae Schakel for their hospitality. This is one of my favorite events. The rainy weather did not dampen spirits as there were 15 visiting Corvairs and nearly twice that many occupants. There would have been one more Corvair but mine started running rough on I-25 and I decided to take it back to its cave. After consulting with Jon Anderson we believe the moisture may have been the culprit. Since then I have taken it out in dry conditions and it's running fine. We all got to see what Eric is working on and got a chance to repurpose components from Steve Goodman's Corsa. On May 23 the Front Range Airport and Pit Rally is hosting their 1st Annual War Bird and Auto Show (formerly known as the Classic Aircraft and Car Show). I believe many of you have attended this car show in the past. Once again this show will feature, hundreds of cars, Aircraft, vendors and entertainment! Registration for the car show is free but if you don't have a car to show admission is free and parking is only $ Dee and John Glusick were contacted by Rick Douglas who is one of the organizers and is personally inviting the local Corvair clubs. Let's see if PPCC and RMC can make a good showing again. Here are a couple of links for more information: and events/ /. It looks like we will need to reschedule our Poker Rally to de-conflict with the Castle Rock Cruise In car show and give us time to plan. We're looking forward to a busy month that close with the Tri-State in Durango. Let me know if you would like join our caravan from Colorado Springs. Drive Safe. 5 2015 Tri-State Tune-Up Sedalia, CO Pictures provided by Steve Goodman, Chris Kimberly, and Randy Karl On Sunday, April 26th, as they have done for the past 7 years, a caravan of Corvairs made their way south from the Denver metro area, and north from the Colorado Springs region, descending on the picturesque town of Sedalia, Colorado for the 8th Annual Tri-State Tune-Up. Eric Schakel (right) explains the nuances of how to melt down pistons from within, as PPCC member Wayne Russert (center) looks on. At least 16 Corvairs were in attendance for the 8th Annual Tri-State Tune-Up event. Originally intended to be an event where folks would drive the Corvair they intended to take to the annual Tri-State meet, and have it looked over by the group of gearheads to resolve any concerning mechanical issues, it s turned in to not only a tech session opportunity, but also a spring social event for both the RMC and PPC Clubs that is highly attended and much talked about. With activities going on both inside the barn, and in the house, the Schakel s do a great job in hosting this event and making you feel right at home. This year s event included a new award, one which Eric would like to see presented each year. As Eric describes it; Linae and I were at Wal- Mart a couple of months back, and we found a sneering bobble-head lawn gnome 8 or so tall that looks so much like Steve Goodman that Pulled pork was the dish of the day, with more than 30 folks from both Clubs enjoying the good food and conversation. Inside the garage tech sessions, Mary Ellen Feasel looks a bit perplexed by the staring contest that Randy Karl and her husband David seem to be in. What could they be thinking about?? Volume 38, Number 5 5 May 2015

Tri-State Tune-Up (cont.) when we held it up Sunday, a half-dozen of our guests blurted out, That s Steve! We decided to create an award called Gnome s Choice, where Steve is required to pick the car/ driver of his choice for the award. The TSTU has become a well-attended event, and we felt that it should have some sort of award attached to it. This year, the first award was presented by Steve Goodman to new RMC member Jon Whiteley, in honor of the fact that his wife Denise rode to the event with him in his 1966 Corsa. The background: Jon has had many Corvettes and performance cars over the years, and Denise has never driven any of them. In fact, she hasn t even ridden in most of them. He wasn t sure he could get her into the Corvair for the rainy trip to the Tune-Up until they actually drove away. The fact that the Corsa delivered them in reasonable comfort to the event, and safely home on a cold, wet day may have opened the door for other automotive ventures! The picked over remains of Steve Goodman s wrecked car. Some folks walked away with some much needed parts and pieces. of you who didn t have a chance to have your car looked over in Sedalia, safe travels, and we hope everything stays together. RMC member Jon Whiteley s 66 Corsa which facilitated his win of the Gnome s Choice award Eric s racing Stinger in rebuild mode On display this day was the crumpled remains of Steve s wrecked car from a couple years ago. Acting as a donor car, numerous parts were repurposed by those in need. It was a good reminder to everyone of how easily things can change. Thanks to whoever was looking over Steve that day, he walked away with some sore spots, but overall was happy to walk away. Next up is the Tri-State event in Durango (May 29-31), so keep the cars running, and for those A few of the Vairs in attendance at the Tune-Up! Volume 38, Number 5 6 May 2015

PPCC CAR FINDS A NEW HOME IN THE RMC!! We reported here a couple months ago that former PPCC member, Bud Edwards, was looking to thin the herd of cars, and that his Corsa Coupe was the next one up for sale. Well, a great big Congratulations to Mr. Paul Seyforth of the Rocky Mountain Corsa (RMC) Club who is the new owner of that pretty burgundy 66 Coupe!! Paul has a long history with these cars, and has been an active and supportive member of the RMC for many years. He brought the car out to the E-Days Car Show a couple weeks ago in Golden. It was the first time he had a chance to shine and show the car, and it looked great! Paul; thanks for keeping this car not only in Colorado, but within the Club scene, so we can all continue to enjoy it for years to come! Ed & Cheryl Halpin WHAT S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?? Ok, take a look at the Club s window drop / business card and tell me what you see wrong. Nothing? Go ahead and take another look Paul Seyforth (RMC) with his new ride Garrie Fox Ernie Pyle Funny, we ve been using this card for the past couple years, to pass around at car shows and to prospective new members, and in all that time, not one single person has ever noted to me that the zip code for our P.O. Box is not the same as the box number (it should be 80935). A big thanks to David & Mary Ellen Feasel for pointing out the obvious. When we have the next batch of cards printed up, we ll make sure that zip code is corrected Volume 38, Number 5 7 May 2015

CUBAN CORVAIRS - SURVIVORS OUT OF NECESSITY A while back, I had read through a 2009 Chicago Tribune article called, 25 Things You Didn't Know About the Corvair, on which Corvair Preservation Foundation (CPF) historian Dave Newell and CORSA technical advisor Larry Claypool had contributed. An interesting read if you haven t seen it, but one item on the list which caught my attention was that a boatload (literally a single boat load) of 1960 Corvairs was sent to Cuba before the revolution. They noted in the article that; at last count, three survive; two reportedly running with front-mounted Russian motors. With recent improvements in diplomatic relations with Cuba, it got me curious as to just how many of our little cars from that original 1960 shipment are still on the road. A quick Google search of the internets, and it looks like there s more than those three out there. I ve copied in several of the images which came up (all pictures credited to both corvaircenter.com and the awesomeness of the Google). Note the front grills on all of them, an indication that the original 6-packs in the rear have likely all been replaced by more available powertrain resources over the years, presumably Russian built Lada (can you say CorLada? ). A neat youtube video to check out is called Corvairs in Cuba AKA 'Frankenvairs' November 2013: * pictures credited to corvaircenter.com and search of Goggle images Volume 38, Number 5 8 May 2015

Fort Carson Auto Skills Shop Presents THE ROD BENDERS SHOW & SHINE On April 16th, Club President Randy Karl had an opportunity to visit with the folks down at Fort Carson s Auto Skills Shop. The visit was in support of the shop s first Show & Shine. Randy reported that while attendance was a bit low for this first event, mainly due to the weather, it was still a solid turnout and he learned a lot about what the new shop management is working to do, through their community outreach program. The shop boasts 32 work bays, with many of them equipped with a service lift. They also have two paint booths, and all of the tools to get the job done. Set as a recurring event throughout the summer, here s the current schedule: 5-8pm, 5/14, 6/11, & 7/16 (Thursday evenings). There is no gathering planned in August. They are looking to put together a big car show on Saturday, 9/12. More info as we hear about it. Free food and refreshments for those in attendance. Just a couple of the 32 bays available for use by authorized DoD personnel We found out about this recurring event from Dee Glusick. Thanks Dee, hope to see you and John up at the shop one of these Thursday afternoons! Volume 38, Number 5 9 May 2015
