NEWSLETTER ARTICLE CONTEST Due to the lack of interest there will be no newsletter article contest for However, feel free to send in something metal detecting related and I will publish it. Canned/packet broth/gravy. Corn muffin mix. Stuffing Pudding BA Neighbors Christmas Project It s time to get started on our club Christmas Project! In past years we have helped fill Christmas stockings which Broken Arrow Neighbors (BAN) distributed to children and senior in our local communities. Currently BAN operates out of a 70 year old building that was once a funeral home. Even with the outdated facility, BAN has managed to serve over 4,000 people a year with emergency assistance services such as food, financial assistance, medical care and clothing. BAN is a nonprofit organization and is celebrating its 30 th year of serving our community. Plans are in the works for a new 10,000 square-foot building to be completed by the end of 2014 just north of their current location. So, this year, due to storage constraints at BAN, we are asking club members to donate canned goods/and or monetary contributions at our December meeting. The club will be matching whatever monies we collect and will be given to BAN to help with the Christmas baskets. If you already have stockings saved back for our usual Christmas project, you are welcome to still donate them, however, please fill them with goodies & attach a label with age & gender of the recipient. Treasure News Page 5 Page 5 ITTHC Christmas Party Saturday - December 14th Owasso Community Center (Large Meeting Room - No Kitchen Facilities) Please arrive early to help set up. 6:00 pm - Setup and decorate 6:30 pm - Appetizers 7:00 pm - Dinner is served 7:30 pm - Santa arrives/raffles Families bringing main course: Turkey - Mike Mitchell (2) Ham - John & Rachel Hayworth, Cathy Young, Mike Mitchell Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Butter - Wally Dick Each family is asked to bring one each of the following food items. If you do not notify her, please bring a wrapped gift with their name on it. (approx $5 in value). There will be a centerpiece drawing. Only those bringing centerpieces will be eligible to win in the drawing. You bring one you go home with a different one. There will be a RAFFLE & pot at the party. This is typically the largest raffle of the year. Please try to bring donations for the raffle. There WILL NOT be a find of the month. Items found since the Nov meeting can be entered at the January meeting. We will still be collecting for the Broken Arrow Neighbors. (See page 4 for the needs list.) We will also be collecting $$$ to help with the completion of this year s stocking project. 7 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 7 7 December Club Hunt ITTHC RescheduledOuting Sunday, December 22 nd The ITTHC will be returning to the McAlester, Oklahoma area for an outing on Saturday, November 23 rd to a coal mining camp area. We will meet at the McDonalds in McAlester, Oklahoma that is at the junction of U.S. Highway 270 and U.S. Highway 69 (LAT/LONG: ). We will be leaving the McDonalds at 8:30am to caravan to the site. From Tulsa take U.S. Highway 75 South and continue South on the Indian Nations Turpike. Exit at Exit 70 for U.S. 270 to McAlester. Turn left (East) and go through Downtown McAlester to the McDonalds at the junction of of U.S. Highway 270 and U.S. Highway 69 (LAT/LONG: ). Below are a map and aerial of the route to McAlester from Tulsa. It will take approximately 1½ to 2 hours to drive from Tulsa. Again we will be leaving the McDonalds at 8:30am, don t be late. The coal mining activity in this area was from the late 1890 s to 1930 with the peak activity around The coal companies paid in paper script and tokens that were redeemable at the "company store". These coal mining camp outings are more artifact hunts. You will find relics relating to the coal mining activity; miner s checks, coal company tokens, miner s equipment, and camp housing related items. There are usually very few coins found These areas are being used as pastures and there will be friendly cows in them. So if you have a phobia about cows, you may want to skip this one. This landowner and his family has a very large cattle operation. The small relic type shovels are acceptable. Filling your digs properly and carrying out anything you dig is critical. Dig a good deep, round plug, refill the dirt in the hole, replace the plug with the grass side up, and tamp the plug level. When we have landowners that allow us to hunt a site, respect their property. This landowner has several more sites of interest. NOT using proper digging techniques will get you ejected from the outing site. You are being watched. Stocking Stuffers Puzzled about what to buy for that metal detectorist on your shopping list??
