I am always amazed at what a well-oiled machine our club is...meaning that there are always those same people who show-up, step-up and get the job done. Those members are the ones that have historically made it easy for the rest of us to enjoy the outings & hunts. (Thanks to you...you know who you are!) Now it s time for the rest of us to give these seasoned members a break. It s time for us to volunteer to do our part at each and every club function. So...with the National Hunt around the corner your help is needed! Try to volunteer in some way, whether it be helping to bury coins, assisting in the concessions, selling bingo tickets, checking cards at bingo, covering tables, setting up chairs, emptying trash containers, collecting camping fees, picking up trash, etc. Just jump in there and support your club! Ok...I m getting off my soapbox. It s time for me to follow my own advise! --- Newsletter editor Bill Watkins.

6 6 I.T.T.H.C. Treasure News Page 6 Community Service Project ITTHC Community Service Update For over twenty years, ITTHC has chosen to assist the Broken Arrow Neighbors Association (BAN) as the focus of our club s community service. BAN provides Assistance With Dignity to over 12,000 people a year. It functions as a nonprofit comprehensive resource center serving residents in need with emergency assistance services such as food, financial assistance, medical care and clothing. In October 2014, thanks to strong support from numerous donors, BAN moved into a new 10,000 square foot building which was completed debt free. The new facility, located at 315 W. College in Broken Arrow, is three times larger than their old building and allows BAN to store its entire supply of food in one place. The extra space also allows for fresh produce to be offered to clients. Clients can self-shop in the food pantry and eventually a soup kitchen will be added. The new building also includes a WIC office and a dental clinic with two exam rooms. BAN hosts several fund raisers throughout the year including a bi-monthly book fair which is located in a separate building at 201 W Houston. The Book Fair is held on the first Friday and Saturday of every even month (February, April, June, August, October and December) from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; the half-price sale is the following Friday and Saturday 8:00am to 3:00pm. There are thousands of used books: fiction, art, biography, children, computer, cooking, craft, history, home & garden, mysteries, non-fiction, religious, science fiction, sports, text, westerns and more! PLUS CDs, DVDs, games, records, tapes, videos, puzzles, magazines and more! (Additional information can be found on their website.) The next book fair is scheduled for April 3 & 4 th. How ITTHC Club Members can help: Monthly: There is always a high demand for items such as canned goods, boxed food items, and toiletries. Items can be brought to our monthly meetings or outings. Since the list of needed items is pretty constant, we will forgo the usual monthly list in the club newsletter. Check the BAN website at: and look for the category Current Needs List for most needed items. Bi-Monthly: Shop at the BAN Book Fairs & donated items to this cause. August: Back-to-School - We will be helping to fill backpacks with necessary supplies. needed items in the July newsletter. We will have a list of December: Christmas Collection We will be collecting canned goods along with money contributions to this effort. Any money collected will be matched by ITTHC and will be given to BAN to assist with the annual Christmas basket distribution. Thank you for helping this very worthy cause! Jean Dick & Marge Wierzchowski

8 8 I.T.T.H.C. Treasure News Page 8 Return to LeBosquet Mine Number 1 There were 29 ITTHC members in attendence for our return outing March 21st to the coal mining camp in the area of the LeBosquet Mine No. 1. The below photograph shows a scene from around 1900 of one of the mines in the area. The weather was about perfect for an outing, cloudy with the high temperature of almost 70. Both of the mines were flowing quite a lot of water and the lower areas were standing in water. The LeBosquet Coal & Mining Co. Mine No. 1 operated from 1902 until approximately 1929 with peak activity from 1920 to The company housing area grew to more than 50 houses for the employees (which they were charged for) plus the buildings for the mine operations. There were in total quite a few items found. Coins: Indian Head Cents, Wheat Cents, V-Nickels, Barber Dimes, and Mercury Dimes. Miner s checks, a miner s tools, carbide lamp parts, pocket watch parts, pocket knives, some jewelry items including a 10K Gold ring, shotgun shells, and loads of assorted copper, brass, iron & other metals. Miner s checks are a good find and a tie to the history of coal mining. Here is an explanation of the miner s checks taken from a 1907 "International Library of Technology" coal mining textbook from the days of "You Load 16 Tons and What Do You Get":

9 9 I.T.T.H.C. Treasure News Page 9 "Where men are paid for mining coal by the weight they mine, they receive credit for the coal either as run-of-mine or as screened coal. In the first case, the coal is weighed before it is dumped into the chute. In the second case, it is weighed after it has passed over screen bars of a certain length and size and having a certain width of spaces between the bars, that is, over a standard screen for the given region, and the miners are then paid only for the screened coal. Where coal is paid for by weight, the miners in many cases hire a checkweighman, whose duty is to check the weights as found by the company weighmaster and to see that full credit is given to the miners, and further to see that the scales are in proper condition to weigh accurately. Each miner is usually designated by a number, and when he sends a car of coal to the tipple he hangs on the car a check, usually made of tin or brass, that has his number stamped on it. As soon as the mine car is weighed and dumped, or damped without weighing, as the case may be. The check is taken from it by the top man and hung on a board, or delivered to the check-weighman. This must be done in the order in which the cars are weighed and dumped that the miner may receive proper credit for his coal. If the scale room is situated at some distance from the dump, the miners* checks are sent from the dump to the weighman through a chute, and if a docking boss is employed to dock for rock mixed with the coal, the dump platform may be connected with the weigh office by speaking tubes, so that thie docking boss can report to the weighmaster the dockage for each car as it is dumped." Hope everyone had a good time, gained an appreciation of the history of coal mining in the Choctaw Nation, and the hard life of those early coal miners. Even though it was hard, dangerous, and dirty work it was still some of the best paying jobs in that time. If you missed this outing, don t miss the next one!
