1 Airport Accessibility for Individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Created by The Autism Program of Illinois Checking In After

2 Checking In Checking In The first step at the airport is to check in. Sometimes I will check in at the computer. Other times, I will check in at the ticket counter. There will be a person there to help me. I will need my passport or ID and ticket information when I check in. Page 1

3 My Luggage When I check in, I will also need to take care of my bags and suitcases (luggage). Checking In There are two types of luggage: Carry-On Luggage are... Small bags and backpacks that I will bring on the plane with me. There are rules about how big carry-on luggage can be. There are bins in the airport to check if my luggage is an OK size to bring on the plane. Checked Luggage are... Large bags and suitcases that will be stored away on the plane while I fly. I will put my bags on the scale. After they are weighed, the person at the counter will take them, or I will bring them to another area of the airport. My checked luggage will be waiting for me after I land. Page 2

4 Boarding Pass Checking In After I check in, I will get a Boarding Pass. A Boarding Pass is my ticket to get on the plane. Boarding Passes can look different, but they all have the same useful information. Page 3

5 Going Through Before I go to my airplane, I need to go through security. There is security at the airport to make sure that only safe things go onto airplanes. There may be a long or short line to go through security. I can try to wait patiently in the line. The first stop is the Ticket Checker. This person will need to see my Boarding Pass and I.D. card. 6 Going Through Next, I will need to get ready to go through the metal detector. Here are the steps I can follow: I can not take any water or drinks with me. I need to throw them in the trash before I go through security. X All other liquids must be put in a plastic bag and then put into a bin. Page 5

8 Going Through Next, I will need to get ready to go through the metal detector. Here are the steps I can follow: All shoes, belts, and jackets must be put in large bins. Page 7

9 Going Through Next, I will need to get ready to go through the metal detector. Here are the steps I can follow: All keys, cell phones, coins and small electronics must be put into small bins. Page 8

10 Going Through Roll all bins and bags on the belt. The belt will move everything into the x-ray machine. The machine will take an x-ray picture of my bags. A security person will look at a screen to see what is inside. Page 9

11 Going Through Now it is time for me to walk through the metal detector. I should check to make sure that all of my pockets are empty. The only thing I should have is my Boarding Pass. When I am ready to go through the metal detector, a security person will tell me it is OK to walk through. I can try to walk through the machine with my arms down. Sometimes the machine may beep and I will need to walk through again. Page 10

12 Going Through After I go through the metal detector, my bags and bins will be waiting for me on the rollers. I can take everything out of the bins, take my bags and go sit on a bench. I will put my shoes on and make sure I have all my things. Page 11

13 Finding My Gate After Now it is time to find my gate. My gate is an area of the airport where my plane will leave from. An airport gate has seats and a walkway to enter the plane. Gates have a letter and a number. Sometimes I can find my gate on my Boarding Pass. There are also computer screens that list all of the flights, the gate and the time they are flying. Page 12

14 At My Gate After When I get to my gate, there will be a desk. There might be a person at the desk. Also, there will be seats where I can sit and wait until it is time to get on the plane. I can look out the window to see if my plane is here. Page 13
